Michael Flatley

As many of you have critiqued my old Lord of the Dance page, and my opinions about him--here you go; a more positive ‘view’ of Michael Flatley.

Born in Chicago, Illinois to Irish immigrant parents with a strong background in Irish dance, music and culture. Michael’s mother is from Carlow, his father is from Silgo- a place with lasting connections in Irish music, dance and legend. Although it was in Carlow where Flatley tried his first steps.

Michael Flatley began dancing at age 11. He was told by teacher after teacher that it was too late for him to start--he would never be ‘good enough’. These turndowns only encouraged Flatley’s spirits more. Of course he was greatly influenced by Kevin Massey, whom Flatley claims as the greatest Irish dancer EVER.

Many people might say dancing was in Michael Flatley's genes, others will tell you he was born with natural talent, and still others will say it was pure dedication.
Michael Flatley has achieved far more than many people know:

-The youngest recipient, ever of an American National heritage Fellowship from President Ronald Reagan.
-First American to win the All-World Championships in Irish Dancing.
-A Guinness Book world record for tapping speed.
-Recognized by the American National Endowment for the Arts, as one of his countries greatest performers.
-Master of Dance Award for his contributions.
-In 1991 the National Geographic Society declared Michael Flatley a Living Treasure.
