I don't have a photo of the Commissioning CO. I need Help from one of the plank owners to submit it to the sight. Someone viewing that has a copy of the commissioning program available to submit. IF you don't have a commissioning photo's or program possibly you have one from a re-enlistment ceremony or awards ceremony.
I'll post a temp photo with your own story of the
photo until we get a true photo and biogphify
.
First Change of command
the second CO was Cdr. John R Kint USN 6/65 - 7/20/67 .
Just as a note the Stoddert first SEA was ETCM H.
Chamber's. Thanks for contributing to your shipmates still. Chief Chambers
retired and resides in Sacramento, Ca
.
If you can shed any light on to the where abbot's
of any of the CO's after departing or where they are today. I'd like
to add a update that would at least include where they went after departing
the ship and when they retired. If any of the Ships Commanding officers
would like to post a message to shipmates I would be glad to post it. I
would like to hear from previous CO's to make contact and hopefully contributing
to building a USS Stoddert Association and possible guest speaker
of a ships reunion.
If anyone has Knowledge to assist in contacting
past CO's please contact me
Second Change of command
Stoddert's third Commanding officer was Cdr. Edmund B Taylor Jr. 7/21/67 - 9/69 .
In ceremonies while on deployment CDR. Edmund B. Taylor assumed command of the Stoddert. Again this photo is from Stoddert's first SEA we have this photo of commander Taylor. I have sad news for possibly follow shipmates of Commander Taylor and his career after he left Stoddert. When He was relieved he his next assignment was as Chief of Staff CruDesFlot's-11. Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla 11 was deployed in 1972 so was the USS Stoddert. But 1972 was hot a good year. And brought sadness to the hart of all the crew. First on May 8th there was a Helicopter crash on board the USS Providence which involved CruDesFlot's11. Upon landing on the USS Providence (in the Tonkin Gulf), an engine failure occurred.. The helicopters right wheel got snagged in tie safety nets. The plane toppled over and fell overboard into the sea. As the craft was settling to the sea the crew was able to escape But Admiral Reentrant C. Robertson Commander of Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla Eleven was killed in the crash. The bodies of Edmund B. Taylor Jr. CruDesFlot's11 Chief of Staff and Cdr John L Leaver Jr. Bodies are missing and presumed dead.
Adrm. Robertson was the highest
ranking officer killed during the Viet Nam war.
Third Change of command
Stoddert's forth Commanding Officer Cdr. Charles E Gurney III 9/69 - 9/71
I don't have a photo of the Commissioning CO. I need Help from readers to submit it to the sight. Someone viewing that has a copy of the Change of command program available to submit. IF you cruise book or family gram photo's or possibly you have one from a re-enlistment ceremony or awards ceremony.
Here we also pause with saddened harts with the loss of more crew members. June 26th 1972 a shell exploded in Mt 51 and resulted in the loss of lives to four Stoddert shipmates. This occurred in the Tonkin Gulf while on the gun line. Those that lost there life were identified as: Lcdr. Michael J. Martin, Senior Chief Gunners mate: Gordon R. Uhler, Gunners Mate First Class: Robert L. Mills and seaman: David N. Larson. There were also three other that were seriously injured but there names were not released.
I want to post a Stoddert memorial page to honor those who gave the ultimate and are now still serving on board. ONE for those who died on active duty and a separate one that will allow family members to post and inform shipmates of lost loved ones.
I'll post a temp photo with your own story of the
photo until we get a true photo and biophgry
.
Fifth Change of command
6th CO Cdr. Edward A Segrist Jr. 4/73 - 3/75.

H. Chamber's. Thanks for contributing to your
shipmates still. Chief Chambers retired and resides in Sacramento, Ca

Sixth Change of command
Stoddert's 7th Commanding officer was Cdr. Peter M. Hekman 3/75 - 9/76 .
In ceremonies while on deployment Cdr. Peter M. Hekman assumed command of the Stoddert. I had a few pictures from my time on board with him. But when transferred from stoddert lost all my souvenirs from the ship. However here I'm able to add some information about where he went after the Stoddert. If memory serves me right I think he went to Washington D.C. when he left. I look through my papers I do have and should be able to update this better when I find them. But I will add that I would wind up serving with him again. We Crossed paths when would come aboard the USS Leahy with His Flag. He enbarked his flag aboard the ship and we passed each other in the passageway and immediately recognized one another. Later we would spend time together as he came down to the Oil Shack to get a cup of coffee. We had shared conversation in the oil shake on the Stoddert so I only thought it natural to say if you have some free time I'd offer the coffee.
At the time he was Rear Admiral and I was a senior chief. We had enbarked his flag for senior officer SOPA for ships attending the Portland Rose festival. We Only had a few minuets together but it was just like old time sharing sea stories from our time together on the Stoddert. I was glad to had served him in Stoddert and happy to see him succeed in his career. Little did I know we would up being stationed with him again as I was transferred to ComCruDesGru-One. Or CCDG-1. either way His title was Commander of Cruiser Destroyer Group One. An It was even Better feeling when He Pinned my Master Chief anchors on me.
When he departed Cruiser Destroyer Group One most of us that were part of his staff thought his next assignment would have been Commander US Forces Pacific. It did not turn out that way, as after making Vice Admiral he was transferred to Commander Naval Sea Systems Command. Washington, D.C. That was the last I knew of him but if you know where he went after that, please share it with us.
Adrm Robertson was the highest ranking officer killed during the Viet Nam war.
Seventh Change of command
Stoddert's 8th Commanding Officer Cdr. Bridgman A Mac Donald 9/76 - 10/78
