Pocket Cruiser

I received e-mail from a Stoddert Shipmate and he kept referring to the pocket cruiser and I had no idea what he was talking about. When I was aboard we referred to the Stoddert as the Benny Sweat. The  late 80's changed the ship nickname to Pocket Cruiser.  Notice it on the cruise book cover and the patch below. So he sent along e-mail and a few pictures from Benjamin Stoddert's final deployment. Although at first just rumors of decommissioning they turned out to be true.

Here some of the crew take in some fresh air and relax. Note: the sand bags. They were added for cover from small arms as a additional duty came to navy ships. Having a coast guard officer and a boarding crew against drug runners.
Matthew Kruzzette writes: Hey thats me. Third from the right in the Dodgers hat. If you look close this is a steel beach picnic. those sitting are still eating there hotdogs. We just left the persian gulf doing escort duty for the last 90days straight. If you look close enough you will we are enjoying a steel beach pinic(sliders/dogs) and in our hands are ice cold BEERs! (Fosters to be exact) The policy of the day was after 90 days in the gulf each crew member was issued two beers and every 45days after. Man were they GOOD! If I can for  the generations I would like to name the squids in the photo,l-r.sitting: fc2 kurt Filter,fc2 John Allen,fc2 Frank Williams,fc3 Todd Guerrero, myself (gmm2 Matt Kruzzette) fc2 David Colvin and fc2 Moore.

I think a lot of shipmates will find this patch special. It was a modified ships patch and not the pocket cruiser again.
