SINN Fein leader Gerry Adams has urged the United
Nations to continue monitoring human rights issues in the
north. In a letter to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Mr
Adams praised the recent report by UN special rapporteur
Param Cumaraswamy into the RUC, the killing of Pat
Finucane and the harassment of defence lawyers.
He asked Mr Annan to encourage all UN human rights
agencies to closely monitor events in Northern Ireland and
to carry out further investigations into human rights “abuses
by British state forces, in particular the connection between
British military intelligence, loyalist death squads and the
South African apartheid regime”.
Yesterday Pat Rice, head of Sinn Fein’s international affairs
department, revealed that Mr Adams had a 10 minute
phone conversation with Mr Annan on Thursday.
Mr Adams praised the United Nations for their efforts for
peace and thanked Mr Annan for his interest in conflict
resolution in Ireland.
