Riney(s) - their arrival in America
The late Mrs Lamar Riney of Owensboro, Kentucky whom I met during the
early 1980s provided the following on Rineys. Having traced her
Hayden family to England she was unable to trace her husband's family
beyond Maryland. The variations of names she lists that she thought
may have changed to Riney is but a guess. The records
in Ireland indicate that Riney is a name peculiar to County Kerry.
Oral tradition has Riney originating after the Battle Of Kinsale in 1601
when the Crown forces routed the Great O'Neill and his supporters.
Being hunted down they sought shelter on the hills that border County
Cork and Kerry. The name Riney was used to avoid detection. In the
Irish language it's an abbreviated way of signifying King Neill i.e.
ri = king, ney short for Neill. Some forty (40) or so years on they may have sailed to Maryland with Cecilius Calvert (Lord Baltimore).

THE RINEY FAMILY OF MARYLAND
AND KENTUCKY
The Rineys of Maryland and Kentucky came to America in the group of colonists"
formed in England under the sponsorship of Lord Baltimore. These people were"
from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales (Whales)."
The First Lord Baltimore, George Calvert, was granted land in Maryland in"
payment of a debt. Being a Catholic he wanted religious freedom granted to"
all people. Therefore in 1632 when King Charles of England granted him a"
charter and proprietorship to land in Maryland he began forming groups of"
immigrants to sail for America. George Calvert died before the King had"
signed the charter, thus the grant was handed down to his son Cecilius Calvert."
Variations of the spelling of the name Riney have been listed as early as 1634."
