Pez is taken from a German word meaning peppermint
The original candies were peppermints made to help people quit smoking
The original dispensers--called "regulars"--resembled lighters
The regulars didn't have "feet" or character heads, and were all one color
The first pez candies were invented in Europe in 1927 by the genius (well, in our eyes) Eduard Haas III
Pez hit the US in 1952, this time aimed towards children. The dispensers had character heads and the candy was fruity!
Later, pez would develop "feet" to help the dispenser stand.
The flavors available in the USA right now are peppermint (recently re-released with replicas of the original "regulars"), strawberry, orange, lemon, and grape.
Canada has cherry, lemon, and orange. Cherry has a unique flavor, and most people love it.
It was decided American kids wouldn't like cherry because cherry is the flavor of cough syrup
In Holland, pez vitamins are available.
In Spain, the flavors of candy include apple and raspberry.
The teeny bars on the back of the current character heads are to stop a dispenser from rolling when you set it down, not to help with the actual dispensing.
