1998 Tommy Bolin Tribute Concerts, Concert 2

The Tommy Bolin
Tribute Concerts

LATEST NEWS on the
"Tommy Bolin Tribute Show" in Denver

Glenn Hughes, (with Johnnie Bolin and the rest of the Bolin Tribute Band, including Energy vocalists Jeff Cook and Gary "GQ" Wilson) played on Friday, August 21, 1998 at Denver Colorado's "The Bug Theater", and then their "Showcase Gig" the following evening, Saturday, August 22, at the Bluebird Theater (same venue as last year -- see below and elsewhere on this page).

FROM MIKE DRUMM ON 7/6/98: Folks who purchase the WHOLE ENCHILADA package for our annual TOMMY BOLIN TRIBUTE CONCERT get one of the most unique musical opportunities, plus, they are our investors--the ones who enable us to stage the event. This year, as you know, we are taking the incredible band we put together last year, Johnnie Bolin Rocky Athas, Ralph Patlan, Terry Brookes, and Robert Ware, and having them back up GLENN HUGHES, and ENERGY vocalists JEFF COOK and GARY WILSON! The festivities begin Friday August 21 when doors will open at THE BUG THEATER at 3PM. The Bug is in northwest Denver, on a block that features three different art galleries, and one of Denver's coolest and best 5 star restaurants, CAFE BRAZIL. THE BUG is a non-profit performing arts space, and holds a little over 100 people. You will see the band go through the process of putting their set together. Then, that night, you will witness the full dress rehearsal--it is just like a concert, just more informal. The show will have full professional sound. The Bug will have a event liquor license, and they will benefit from all alcohol sales, thus benefitting a cool underground non-profit organization. Saturday, we will move to the BLUEBIRD THEATER for our autograph event at 3PM. Across the street is the brand new very hip GOOSETOWN TAVERN, (it was the coffee place last year) I have contacted them, and it looks like we will stock the jukebox with TOMMY music, and everyone can party and eat there until showtime. Also, you will be the very first people in the world to receive our 2 new CDs, TOMMY BOLIN AND ENERGY LIVE: THE RADIO BROADCASTS, and THE 1997 TOMMY BOLIN TRIBUTE CD featuring GLENN HUGHES and JOHNNIE BOLIN. For everyone who orders THE WHOLE ENCHILADA, we will be forwarding confirmation letters, with maps, and full instructions within the month. The excitement is building, so please join us for great music, and great sense of community.

The following discussion describes the thinking and planning during the Spring of 1998 that lead up to the 1998 Tribute gig...

This was on the BOLIN BOARD (http://www.tbolin.com)on MAY 5, posted by the president of the Tommy Bolin Archives, Mike Drumm:

"OK, time for an update. In terms of the Tribute concert, one of the possibilities that has fallen through for this summer--but no ruled out--is for JOE WALSH to reform the JAMES GANG and do a show for us. He is interested, but he has way too much on his plate for this year. His manager has advised me to stay in touch, as something could happen--but not this year.

Now I need your help. Who would you rahter see this year? Glenn Hughes, or Alphonse Mouzon playing all the Mind Transplant material with a red hot fusion band? We are in discussions with both camps, but I don't know which way to go. Please vote by e-mailing me directly. We need to figure this out quick or you all will mutiny!

Also, in our discussions with the Glenn Hughes camp, it looks like we have an agreement in principle to release the best of our two nights of last years Tribute Concert! If all goes well, we will release it and TOMMY BOLIN: ENERGY LIVE VOLUME 1 in August.

Also, it looks like we have come to closure on our new distribution deal with ZEBRA RECORDS. We will begin issuing our CDs with them starting with FROM THE ARCHIVES VOLUME TWO in August. ZEBRA is distributed by WEA,so we will see much improved distibution. By the way, ZEBRA has just signed JAZZ IS DEAD, Billy Cobham's new band that does jazz fusion versions of GRATEFUL DEAD songs, as well as songs from SPECTRUM I saw them last night 5/4/98 and they were incredible. their CD comes out June 9th.

We are going to try to offer it throught he Archives. As far as the Purple rehearsal tapes, we are in negotiations with The Captain, and have spoke with Deep Purple Inc. about it.

We will see. I think it would be a great thing if the Archives could release some of this material. You are now up to date."
