Massey Harris Registry

Updated: March 9, 2002

This page is a registry for known surviving examples of Massey Harris stationary engines. These engines were built by the Massey Harris Company Ltd. of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. If you have a Massey Harris engine or know of one and would like to send me your information, it would be welcome. This page is under construction and will be updated  constantly. For reasons of privacy the owners of these engines are not listed on this page.

A Brief History of Massey Harris Stationary Engines

Prior to building their own stationary engines, Massey Harris sold the Olds line of engines. Althought the Type 1 Massey Harris engines would remind people of Olds engines in appearance, that was the only similarity because in 1914, Massey purchased the Deyo-Macey Engine plant in Binghampton, New York in so that they could start to make their own gasoline engines in Canada.  As early as 1914, Massey Harris was producing engines in Binghampton. In 1916, the Deyo-Macey plant and equipment was moved to Toronto, Ontario and Massey Harris started building engines there.

Type 1 Engines
The Type 1 engines were built from 1914 to 1922 in sizes of 2, 3, 4 1/2, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 15 horsepower. They are of a headless, hit and miss design with an updraft carb and a cast iron crank guard with the name plate fastened to it. They are easily recognized by the saxaphone style carb and the exhaust rocker arm mounted underneath. They are usually painted red with green flywheels and yellow pin striping. I have also seen original examples with red flywheels and some with red spokes and green rims and vice versa. The ignition system on most of the ones I have come accross has been battery with a buzz coil and spark plug but some had a Webster magneto and ignitor. There was a leaver attached to the exhaust rocker arm which was aligned verticaly to trip the Webster. When using a spark plug, it is best to use one with a long reach. Tuning the governor can be a little tricky  but when running properly, the engine will need little attention.

Type 2 Engines

The Type 2 engines were built from 1923 to 1932 in sizes of 1-1/2, 3, 4-1/2 and 6 horsepower. They were a throttle governed engine which initially used an all brass mixer and a Webster Magneto when they first came out in 1923. In 1924, the ignition was changed to the Wico SK magneto and spark plug. In 1926, a conversion was made available to convert the 1923 models to the Wico system. Their appearance was more conventional for the time and they were set up to deliver full horsepower using either gas or kerosene. The larger sizes featured the ability to siphon water from the hopper into the intake to prevent knocking and pre-ignition under load.

Type 3 Engine Registry

Type 3 Engines

The Type 3 engines were built after 1933.  Specifications for the M-H type 3 engines are as follows:1-1/2hp @ 800 to 1100 RPM, 3hp @750 to 1050 RPM and the 6hp @ 575 RPM. These engines had throttling governors designed to use gasoline or kerosene. Former Massey-Harris employees have stated that they doubt any 6hp type 3 engines were ever really built. A number of 3hp, type 3 engines apparently were shipped to British Columbia on orchard sprayers. These engines were equipped with a diaphragm type fuel pump, semi self-oiling, single flywheel, and used a rotary high tension Wico magneto. The type 3 were offered for sale from 1933 through 1935. These were the last engines actually built by Massey-Harris at their Toronto works.

Massey Harris/Cushman Engines

From 1936 to 1952, Massey-Harris sold the well known "R" model engines built by Cushman Motor Works of Lincoln, Nebraska. These were self oiling, water cooled, two disc type flywheels with Wiko EK magneto and throttling governor.
Note** Recently, someone emailed me some information on their Massey Cushman engines. It came in one day before I got hit with the KAK worm virus and the information was lost. So, if you have sent me information and it is not here, please send it again and accept my apologies

The Massey Harris Registry is hosted and maintained by Duncan and Sandy's Carrot Patch and is put here for everyone to make use of. It is our hope to eventually compile enough information so we can get an idea as to the years of manufacture of individual engines and possibly get an idea of how many still exist.
