ANTOINE CRISPEL was born 1635 in the Province of Artois France near the border with Belgium. During the 17th century, long and devastating wars were fought; many of the inhabitants were forced to flee from their fertile and productive farms. Antoine, a young farmer, went to Mannheim in the Lower Palatinate. There he married MARIE BLANSHAN born 1640 Armentierres France; died about 1679 Hurley NY; daughter of Matthew Blanshan and Magdalena Joire. On 27 Apr 1660, they sailed on the GILDED OTTER to New Amsterdam. Upon arrival, they immediately moved to the village of Esopus in Ulster County NY. In 1661, Antoine settled in Hurley a short distance away. In 1663, there was an Indian uprising and his wife and an infant daughter were captured; they were soon rescued. After his wife, Marie, died, he married about 1680 Petronella LeMan. After her death he divided most of his property among his children and spent his remaining days with his daughter, Maria, and her family. He left a will dated 6 Nov 1707; proved 10 June 1708.
