JAN or JOHANNES SPRONG, the common ancestor of the Sprongs in
America, signed his name "Johannis Sprungh". He was born about
1640 and came to New Amsterdam aboard DE BONTE KOE in 1660. He came
from the Town of Bonn, Drenthe, in Northern Holland. He came over as a
soldier to partly pay for his passage because on the books of the East
India Company, he still owed 16 guilders. He married 23 Oct 1660
NY Dutch Church ANNA/JOHANNA SODELAERS born about 1625 from Connex in
Bergen Norway; she married (2) Claes Tunisen Clear on 15 Sep 1694. Jan
was a blacksmith residing in Flushing, Flatbush and finally settled in
Bushwick. He died before 15 Sep 1694.

daughter of Stephen Janse Schenck and Antie Wyckoff. Settled in
Flatlands NY where he was a farmer. When the Revolutionary War
began, Volkert and his son Volkert Jr. were loyal to the British and
fled to Canada probably about 1783 when Loyalists were evacuated from
New York City. He returned to NY after the war and is buried in
the Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church cemetery.
