"A little way out of Amboy, we have another account of an "auto-de-fe", in which Sheriff Abraham Van Doren is pictured on his horse, riding with drawn sword between the spectators and a fire, in which was burning a negro murderer. This as at Hillsborough (Millstone) in 1752, the sufferer having been convicted there of killing his master, Jacob Van Nest, who lived near Milltown, in Branchburg Township. This black wretch was large and athletic, and for a long time had been considered dangerous. In a fit of passion he struck his master a murderous blow with an axe as he dismounted from his horse at his stable door; the negro's anger was occasioned by the discovery that his master had helped himself to some tobacco from the slave's box."9. "On the day of the great eclipse of the sun, June 16, 1806, started with his family, consisting of his wife, five daughters, and two sons -- Jacob and Abraham -- for the "Lake Country," as this region was then called. They, with their household goods, came in two wagons, by way of Paterson, Cherry Valley, Schenectady, Skaneateles, Hardenbrook's Corners (now Auburn) to the foot of Owasco Lake, where Jacob, a brother of Abraham Sr. lived, having accomplished this journey in eleven days. Shortly thereafter they came to Ovid, by way of Cayuga Bridge, and arrived on the 4th of July, while the first celebration of that anniversary was being held in the then infant village of Ovid, where the frame of the first court-house had just been raised. A few days thereafter, Abraham, with his father, went to where the city of Rochester now stands, where there was then but one house. They forded the river above the falls, stayed at night at Hanford's Landing, some three miles below, where there was a tavern. After proceeding some ten miles farther west, they were compelled to turn back for want of provisions. Gustavus Vandorn, a farmer living about three miles from Ovid, committed suicide with a Winchester rifle Friday afternoon about 4 o'clock. He lived about an hour after committing the deed and stated that he did it intentionally. Vandorn was about 58 years old and leaves a family of children.ESTHER:
