The answer is...lots! First and foremost, HAVE ALL YOUR PETS SPAYED OR NEUTERED! There are too many homeless pets as it is, please don't make any more!
Adopting a pet from a shelter is great, but not everyone can do this. You can help the shelter in other ways. Volunteer some of your time to help care for the animals, or, if you don't have much time (who does), at least visit the animals to help ease their stress and loneliness. Well-socialized animals are easier to place. If even this is impossible, consider donating some animal supplies. A bag of food, litter, pet shampoo, or treats would probably be greatly appreciated, as most shelters are on a tight budget.
When you see animal abuse taking place, don't be afraid to speak up! Call your local animal control or SPCA if you witness cruelty. Also, be aware of events taking place on a larger scale. Contact politicians to urge them to use their power to protect animals. Boycott companies whose policies promote animal cruelty. Educate others...the most powerful tool we have is knowledge!
