Coming Home
I would love feedback, but be nice. I have never done this before!
Coming Home
Joey drove into Capeside city limits at
10:52. She immediately rolled her window down to smell the air. She
was home. Amanda and Jessica, her 2 and 5 year old, were asleep in the
back seat. She was glad to be bringing them to Capeside. She knew they
would love living here for a while. She was looking forward to it. She
sighed as she drove past the high school. It had been nearly 11 years
since she had graduated. She had just left her husband of 6 years, and
was coming home to Capeside to live with her father for a while and sort
out her life. She was looking forward to finding "Joey" again.
Her life had not been so bad she thought. She graduated from
Boston University six years ago, got married and had two beautiful
daughters whom she loved more than life itself. She had been a junior
high school science teacher for 3 and a half years until the birth of
her second child, Jessie. She couldn't bear to send another off to
daycare so she and Nick had decided she would stay home with the girls.
Nick was a good man. She met him her senior year of college, and they
were planning to get married when Joey accidentally got pregnant. They
married the week after graduation. Nick was an accountant and traveled
a lot. This was part of the problem with the marriage, but Joey knew in
her heart that they just did not make each other happy. They loved each
other, but it just wasn't enough. She didn't have any regrets where
Nick was concerned. She gained a lot from their marriage. She knew now
what she wanted from a relationship and wouldn't settle for less.
Her thoughts turned to Dawson as she got closer to home. She had not
talked to him in a few years. They had been writing every once in a
while and exchanged Christmas cards, but their lives were so different
now. Her last letter came back unopened (no forwarding address). He
was still single as far as she knew. He had been engaged a few times,
but never made it to the altar for one reason or another. She thought
back to high school and their attempt at romance. They were just too
young to deal with the depth of their feelings. They were fifteen and
their relationship couldn't handle all the curves life threw at them.
They remained good friends though. They had kept in touch all through
college. Dawson went to school a few hours from Joey, and he would come
to Boston occasionally and meet up with her. After she met Nick those
visits occurred less and less. Dawson didn't care for Nick and Joey
knew it. Nick was jealous of the closeness she and Dawson shared too.
Oh well it didn't really matter now. She wondered where Dawson was.
She knew he had been in New York last, but had apparently moved. Her
thoughts were halted when she came to her street.
Mr. Potter had been released from prison for good behavior a
little less than two years ago. Bessie and Bodie had moved to New York
right before he was released, and he moved into the house alone. Joey
had not been to see him since he had gotten out. He had gone to Boston
to see her every few months though. He had been there to see his third
grandchild after she was born. He was a proud grandfather. He was
looking forward to Joey and the girls coming to live with him for a
while. He had a hard time finding a job at first, but got on with a
construction company building bridges and was doing well. He was up
waiting for Joey when she pulled into the driveway. He went out to
greet her and help with the girls.
Joey got choked up as she pulled into the driveway. She had not
been here in over two years. She had came to help Bessie go through
some of her mother's stuff before Bessie and Bodie moved to New York.
It had been an emotional visit. She missed knowing Bessie was here. At
least now her Dad was. She was surprised to see him standing on the
porch when she pulled into the driveway. She got out quietly and gave
him a big hug. He helped her take the girls in and put them to bed. He
had added another bedroom to the house last year and now it was going to
come in handy. They talked small talk and Mr. Potter excused himself.
He had to work the next day.
Joey made herself a cup of tea and went out onto the porch to
stare at the sky and think. It was late, but she had learned to stay up
late. It was the only time she had to herself now. Her thoughts
drifted to Dawson again. She still loved him, but had given up on them
when she got pregnant with Nick's child. Now that she was single again,
she couldn't help but think of what could have been if they had been
able to get up the courage to try again. She knew one of the first
things she was gonna do tomorrow was call Mrs. Leery and find out what
he was up to. She got up and went in and got ready for bed. She laid
down and fell asleep thinking about Dawson.
Joey awoke to the cries of her two year old. Jessie had woken up
and not recognized her surroundings. Joey comforted her and took her
outside to see the creek. Amanda woke up and came outside too. Joey
took them both in for breakfast. They played outside until lunchtime.
Joey showed them the little boat she used to use to go to Dawson's.
Amanda wanted to ride in it. She told her they might go up the creek
after lunch and a nap. She decided she would drop by instead of calling
and surprise Gail. After the girls got up Joey loaded them up and rowed
over to the Leery house. There were no cars outside, but Joey knocked
anyway. Mrs. Leery came to the door and screamed "Joey! What are you
doing here!" Joey was happy to see her too.
Dawson had just wrapped up his first major motion picture in Los
Angeles. The editing had taken months, but it was finally over and he
could not wait to get out of Los Angeles. He had all of his belongings
in storage in New York moved back to Capeside to a house not far from
his parents. He needed a break from all that was Hollywood. He wasn't
into the glitz and glamour. His parents had been elated when he told
them he was coming home. Thinking of Capeside brought Joey to mind. He
felt a pang in his heart when he thought of her. It had broken his
heart when she called to tell him she was pregnant and getting married.
He hated her boyfriend, now husband. He couldn't bear to be around
them. It was all his own fault and he knew it. He had never been able
to work up the courage to try for a relationship with Joey again. The
first try didn't work. They had managed to remain friends somehow, and
he couldn't bear to take a chance on messing things up. "Real smart
Dawson" he mumbled to himself thinking how ignorant he had been not to
think that she would find someone else and get married. He wondered if
she really would have married Nick if she hadn't gotten pregnant. Oh
well doesn't matter now he thought. It is over and done with. He laid
back in his seat and tried to sleep through the rest of his flight.
Joey introduced her daughters to Mrs. Leery. "I knew who they were
from the pictures you sent" she exclaimed as she hugged them both.
Jessie clung to Joey's leg. "They are beautiful Joey, just gorgeous"
Mrs. Leery said emphatically. "So you know that Dawson is coming home
today?" Joey's face lit up "No, I was just gonna ask about him. We
haven't talked for a couple of years." Mrs. Leery filled her in about
his big movie, and why he couldn't stand Hollywood." Joey tried to act
casual as she asked if he was married. Mrs. Leery told her no and joked
that Joey's children were gonna be about as close to grandchildren as
she was gonna get. Joey laughed nervously. "So when is he getting in?"
Mrs. Leery told her any time now "Mitch has gone to pick him up from the
airport, and you just have to stay. He will be so happy to see you!"
"That's OK Mrs. Leery, I don't want to take away from your catching up.
Besides I have to get the girls back to visit with my Dad" Joey said,
but just as the word Dad escaped her lips she heard Mr. Leery's car pull
up.
Joey felt the color escape from her face. She excused herself and
slipped into the bathroom. She put on a little lipstick and brushed her
hair. Jessie was pounding on the door, and she was embarrassed she
forgot to bring her in with her. She came out just as she heard Mrs.
Leery tell Dawson she had a surprise for him. She knew she was the
surprise. He saw Amanda first and looked at his Mom and then he turned
around and saw Joey. His heart fell. She looked beautiful and her
children were beautiful. The youngest looked just like her and the
oldest looked a lot like Bessie. They were both searching for words and
Mrs. Leery finally asked Joey how long she was in town. Joey blushed
and just spit out the truth that she left Nick, and they were staying
with her dad for a while. A big grin spread across Dawson's face as he
eagerly told Joey she looked great. He came across the room and hugged
her. She loved feeling his arms around her and smelling his after
shave. She never wanted him to let go.
They both backed up and she said, "Well, I don't want to keep you
from your parents. I just got here last night and came to ask how you
were." He said "I am fine, but we need to catch up. I have a house up
the road close to the ruins. Could you come by later?" She hoped her
face didn't tell how excited she was. "Sure .. Just give me a
call...umm same phone number.. Remember it?" "Yeah, and Joe? I can't
wait." She could feel herself blush. Her neck grew hot, and she
reached out and hugged him again real fast and said "Me either, maybe my
dad will baby-sit for me." Mrs. Leery chimed in "Oh if he doesn't want
to I will! " and she winked at Dawson.
He walked her down to the dock and helped her get Jessie
into the boat. His heart was pounding. Could it be that he and Joey
were gonna have a second chance? Joey was thinking the exact same
thing. She could feel his stares and knew he still cared. She wondered
if he could tell she did too. She was deep in thought all the way back
to her dads. When she tied the boat up she saw him out on the porch.
He was grinning from ear to ear. The girls ran up to him, and he hugged
them both. She told him about going to the Leery's and seeing Dawson.
He gave her a knowing look and asked if she was going to see Dawson
later. She asked him if he minded watching the girls and putting them
to bed. He said he didn't at all.
Joey showered and put on a little black sleeveless dress. As she
fixed her hair she remembered how she had it pulled up for the
Windjammer pageant and remembered that night. She laughed to herself.
"So much has happened since then" she thought. She put her make-up on,
and the phone rang just as she was finishing. It was Dawson. Amanda
didn't want her to go, but she promised her she would take her to the
beach the next day if she was good for Papa. Dawson gave her the exact
address and warned her that he had not unpacked yet, but that he had
ordered dinner for them to be delivered at 8. She told him it sounded
great and hung up. She said goodbye to her dad, hugged the girls and
held her breath as she walked out the door.
Joey was so nervous as she drove to Dawson's that she thought she
was going to hyperventilate. She pulled over to think a few minutes.
She was confused and afraid. She had just gotten into town and here she
was ready to fall for Dawson all over again.....but how could she
not?... The timing was perfect....like it was meant to be. Nick would
freak if he knew she and Dawson were together..She decided not to worry
about Nick. He had moved to Tacoma, Washington two months ago for a job
with a new company. Her thoughts were all over the place. She decided
she had better go. Maybe she would just tell Dawson she wanted to take
things slow, that is if he wanted a relationship.
The food had just arrived and Dawson was wondering what was keeping
Joey. He had just started to the door to look out when she knocked. He
opened the door and they just looked at each other. His eyes. She
could get lost in his eyes. He was just as handsome as ever. Before
she could say anything he swooped in and kissed her passionately. She
kissed him back, but pulled away laughing "Wow Dawson, I don't have to
guess what your plans are huh?" Dawson blushed and blurted out "Joey, I
have to know right now is their a chance for us?" Joey taken aback
"Well maybe if you will let me in before you maul me." Dawson "Sorry,
you know how I can get." Joey laughed "Yeah, just never seen you this
way over me." Dawson "Oh I was. I just did a good job hiding it."
Joey trying to act calm and cool "Well what are we eating?" Dawson "I
took the liberty of ordering shrimp fettuccini for the both of us. I
remember that you like it and figured it was a safe take out food."
Joey smiled "Sounds good (she looks around his place) I really like
your.. Dawson!" He had slipped up behind her and was kissing her neck.
She protested a little, but not too much. She loved feeling him touch
her. He couldn't stop thinking about how beautiful she was. She looked
almost the same as high school. Her bust and hips had expanded a bit,
but looked damn fine to him. Perfect! She had always been perfect to
him.
He wrapped his arms around her waist and whispered in her ear "I love
you Joey and I always have." Her heart leapt as she turned around to
face him "I love you too Dawson.... I can't believe this is happening"
she murmured the last part aloud, but didn't mean too. Her knees were
growing weak. "Me either" Dawson whispered. It was like fate brought us
back together at the perfect times in our lives so we could make it work
this time." He continued kissing her neck and shoulders (as he picked
her up and carried her to his room.) "So much for going slow" she
thought. She looked around his room studying it for a minute trying to
clear her head. It was bare except for a king sized bed and a lot of
unpacked boxes. There were blinds over the windows. Dawson lifted her
chin with his finger and kissed her passionately. Their tongues
explored each other's mouths while their hands explored each other's
bodies. Dawson unzipped her dress and let it fall to the floor. She
felt a tingle run up and down her spine. She started unbuttoning his
shirt while he did the same to his pants.
They fell to the bed still kissing. He wanted to kiss her
everywhere. He started at the back of her neck and worked his way down
her back unfastening her bra as he went. She couldn't think straight
she wanted him so much. She was able to mutter that she was on the
pill. He slid her panties down and they fell onto the bed. With that
he stopped and looked up at her and said "God you are so beautiful
Joey... I love you so much." They were both in tears as they hugged.
Their kisses soon became passionate as he slid into her. She had waited
all of her life for this. She moved with him until he came, and they
laid there and held each other until they fell asleep.
Joey woke up and glanced around for a clock. She didn't find
one. She didn't want to move too much because Dawson's arm was around
her and she didn't want to wake him up. She didn't want to face
reality. She was afraid that Dawson would not want a permanent
relationship with her when he realized how hard raising children was-
especially someone else's children. She was responsible for two
adorable little girls and she wasn't sure Dawson was up for that
responsibility too. She sighed and rolled back over to go to sleep. "A
penny for your thoughts" Dawson whispered. She was startled by his
voice. She hadn't realized he was awake. He had been awake a few
minutes and could tell she was deep in thought. She sat up and wrapped
the sheet around her body and said "We need to talk Dawson." His heart
fell. He was so happy and was afraid of what she was going to say.
"OK.. go ahead.. something is obviously on your mind." Joey looked down
and then back up at him not knowing how to begin "Well.. Dawson, I just
want you to know that it is OK if this is just a one time thing... I
love being like this with you right now, even if it is just ...."
Dawson could not believe his ears "Joey, I thought you felt the same way
I do...Why would I want this to be a one time thing... Do you???" Joey
stammered "No, not at all, but Dawson I am part of a package. I am not
sold seperately. I have two girls who depend on me for everything, and
that is a big responsibility for me as a mother, much less for someone
else to deal with...and well, I just want you to know that I won't hold
it against you if you don't want to get involved with me." Dawson "Joey
are you out of your mind??? I love you...and loving you means loving
your girls. I know that. I don't care.. They seem great.. they have to
be look at their mother..I couldn't help but love them. The little one
she looks just like you." he grins.
Joey sighs, "Dawson, that is great, but we just met up today. You
haven't had time to think this through. Don't make promises you can't
keep. It is OK. I am letting you off of the hook. It would be hard
for us you know? I can't just pick up and take off whenever I want. I
have to think about them, and even their father."
Dawson "Yeah, where is Nick?"
Joey "Washington...a new job."
Dawson "He never was good enough for you"
Joey "and you are??"
Dawson "Joey, we are soul mates- always have been. It is written
somewhere that we are to be together. I just know it."
Joey laughing "You think so huh?"
Dawson "I know so, would you have me?? You know my life is not
uncomplicated itself. I work crazy hours when working....location
shoots, high stress, budgets, months of editing....." Brings his hand
to his head to sweep his hair back.
Joey "Dawson I have always been so proud of you. I don't know many
people, if any, who have always known what they wanted to do from
childhood and went after it and achieved their dreams."
Dawson "Well I have always had a great support system. Joey with you by
my side I feel like I could take on the world. What do you say me and
you make a go of it?
Joey gasping "We can give it a try"
Dawson smiling "We have been waiting our entire lives for this.. We have
wasted enough time."
Joey half smiling "Yeah, well we have some catching up to do, and I have
two little ones who need to get to know you too. I don't think we
should rush it."
Dawson grinning "No problem Joey, Whatever you want !!"
Joey grinning "Great!"
They come together and kiss until Joey's stomach growls. They both fall
back laughing.
