Road Trip
This is part one of the trilogy in my series.
“The bad stuff is finally over,” thought Dawson as he lay on his bed thinking about the
events of the past week.
Jen had survived through her grandfather’s funeral, and though she is still in a lot of
pain, Joey is helping her through it, which on it’s own is pretty amazing considering the
little grudge match they’ve had going. Jen and Joey being friends would be great, a little
awkward perhaps, but overall things were definitely getting better.
Relationships seemed to be going very well on all fronts, his parents seemed to be
happy and getting along, which considering the obvious was pretty great. Jen and her
grandmother were getting along well at the funeral, which also was amazing considering
the circumstances. Most prominently in his mind though, things with Joey couldn’t have
possibly been better, she decided not to go to France, which was great in Dawson’s mind,
even though he realized it was a bit selfish, but he was certain this wouldn’t be her only
opportunity.
“Hey Dawson,” he heard from the outside of his window. He sat up to find Joey
climbing through the window in the usual fashion. “Hey, what’s up?” he asked. “I decided
to go and see my dad, you know, let him know I’m not going to France.” She replied
knowing that the confirmation of the fact somehow made Dawson feel a little better.
“Need an escort?” he asked with a little grin. “No Dawson. This time I can handle myself,
but you can walk me to the Bus station.”
Arriving at the Bus Station, Dawson turned to Joey while stood at the ticket counter
“Are you sure you don’t need me to come along?” he asked, hoping for a yes. “Once again
Dawson, I’m a big girl, I can handle it” she replied with a smile. “Ok,” he chuckled “Say hi
to him for me.” He hugged her, and Joey boarded the bus, found her seat and blew him an
obviously sarcastic kiss.
Dawson waved as the Bus left the Capeside Bus Depot, and he walked back in the
direction of the road, and head towards home.
Joey had just settled in to the slightly lumpy seat when she noticed that a pretty nasty
storm was on the horizon. “Great, just what I need, to get stuck at a prison in a storm.”
She thought, but then her thoughts went elsewhere as she began to relax.
Dawson had flipped on the TV as soon as he got home to catch his mother’s news
broadcast, but really to make sure that she isn’t giving Bob the googol eyes again.
However, the weather report was on. “Record breaking winds expected in the region,
heavy thunderstorms and downpours are expected, better stay home for this one.” The
weatherman reported. The screen showed the radar and indeed, all hell was about to break
loose. “What? And Joey’s out in the middle of that crap, damn!”.
Joey was awoke to find heavy rain pouring down on the bus and lightning strikes all
over the place, she gave a little groan and then screamed as a bolt came down really close
to the bus.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, we will attempt to continue to the next town where it looks
like we’ll have to hold out for this storm to pass.” The driver said over the intercom, but
the big problem was right in front of them, the bus made it’s way around a bend in the
state road and lightning tore from the sky, knocking down a tree and the bus careened
into it.
The passengers screamed as the bus slammed into the tree and overturned onto its side.
Joey screamed as she felt herself leave the seat from the force of the bus flipping on its
side. She fell out of her seat and everything was spinning and people were falling all over
the place, and suddenly, everything went black.
To be continued….
