"Do you guys ever think about the future?" Dawson asked his friends at
lunch one day.
"That was rather random Dawson, where did that come from?" Joey asked.
"It's just a project we are doing for film class. We are studying where
film was 10 years ago and where it will be 10 years from now."
"And this would apply to our lives in that..." Pacey said sarcastically.
"Well, it just got me thinking about where the four of us would be in ten
years so I decided to do something about it." Dawson said.
"What are you gonna do, script out the rest of our lives?" Jen asked him
"No, we are all gonna write down on a piece of paper where you see yourself
and the other three people in ten years. I also want everyone to include
something meaningful to them. Then, we are gonna bury it in the bottom of
the creek." Dawson said with a huge smile on his face.
"Okay, I guess." Pacey said
Jen and Joey also agreed and they decided they would all give their stuff to Dawson the next day in school in sealed envelopes so that no one could read what each other wrote.

The Next Day at School
"Hey Jo!" Dawson said. "Do you have all your stuff?"
"Yeah, but remember that you promised not to look." Joey said as she
reluctantly handed him her envelope.
Jen and Pacey walked up to them and both gave Dawson their envelopes as
well.
"I'll go bury these tonight, exactly equidistant between my and Joey's houses so we will always know where it is." Dawson said.
After school, Dawson went home and started to put all of his friends envelopes into a big metal box and realized that he hadn't written his yet. But, he had a feeling that he needed to read Joey's note. He knew that he shouldn't, but curiousity overcame him and he slowly opened Joey's sealed envelope. He took out the note and read:
"Ten years from now I see myself married to Dawson. We have two kids, a boy and a girl. They are named Elliot after E.T. and Kaitlyn." At this point, Dawson knew that he should have stopped reading, but he couldn't. "I see Dawson with me and he is a famous Hollywood director. I see Pacey as single. He is still living in Capeside and works at the video store full time while "assisting" Dawson on his movies to get by. I see Jen, well I don't wish pain or trauma on anyone so, I see Jen back in New York and my life will finally be peaceful." Inside she also included a friendship bracelet Dawson had given her several years ago.
Knowing this info about how Joey pictured her life, he suddenly had the urge to read Jen's. He opened it up and read:
"I see myself married to Dawson. We have no kids and live in New York in a high rise penthouse that we earned due to Dawson's job as a director and mine as an actress. I see Pacey and Joey together. But, we no longer associate with them so that my life can finally have peace." Jen included the movie ticket from her and Dawson's first date.
Dawson knew he couldn't stop at this point so he ripped open Pacey's envelope and read his.
"I see myself in a bed making passionate love to my wife Joey for the rest of our lives. I see Dawson with Jen and about 4 kids. Joey and I still live in Capeside, but by choice since we both "got out" first, like we always promised we would. And since Dawson has Jen and I have no threat of losing Joey, my life will finally be peaceful." Pacey included in his envelope a shell from a snail, a memory of his project with Joey.
Dawson realized that he had been crying and was suddenly faced with a
decision that would impact his entire future. Should he end up with Joey
or end up with Jen and leave Joey to be with Pacey? He had no clue what to
do, so he just sat there. And then, the answer came to him and he started
to write his note.
"I see myself with...
