If You Remembered Transformers...
Actually, I am big fan of anime (Japanese animation). The three titles below are must-sees. They break the stereotypes of porn and ultra-violence usually associated with anime. They actually make you think. If anything, I would give them each a rating of PG-13 (mostly because of language). There is a complexity in them is almost never found in Hollywood, much less in a cartoon. I prefer subtitled. Although more expensive, for some reason the translations always get butchered more when they are translated. And without further ado...
- Neon Genesis Evanglion
This is the best of the best. A twenty-six part series will totally blow you away. Set in the back-drop of the near future, Earth is being attacked by giant aliens called Angels. The only defense is giant machines called Evas. Although you might be laughing already, I am not doing the plot any justice at all. It is the story of an insecure boy named Shinji is forced to pilot one of these Evas. The story is full of religious symbolism, philosophy and psychology. I guarantee that you have never seen anything like this anywhere. The music is incredible, especially the opening sequence. The animation and drawings are incredible, espeical when you see how elegant they are (they use very few lines considering their detail).
- Macross Plus Top of animation, sprinkled with some computer animation for good measure. I loved this four-part series. The story of a love triangle revolving around some mysterious event from the past. I do not know how to best describe it. Also set in the future, but there is more of a focus on starships.
- The Wings of Honneamise The drawings on this are amazing. Set in a world on the brink of space travel, the world is highly imaginative. It is the story of Shiro, I man with no purpose. After meeting a devout woman, he strives to fly to the moon. Facing ridicule and opposition from all sides, Shiro strives for his goal, and even discovers the history of human technology.
Sure, you remember Transformers (who could forget them) but do you remembers theses?
Old TV Shows
- CARE BEARS -- Insanely cute bears who shout,
- VOLTRON -- Spectacular show. I guess you could call it the original Power Rangers, except it doesn't suck. Do you remember the episode where the Green Tiger Pilot almost killed battling some witch (either that, or he did get killed). Then the rest of the team had to train Princess What's-her-name to become the next green pilot.
- G.I. JOE -- For some reason, I remember G.I. Joe having some of the same background music as the Transformers. Do you remember the movie, where some Serpent person transformed Cobra Commander into a snake?
- DUCK TALES -- Very, very good show. The best episode ever made was when Glongold teamed up with Uncle Scrooge in order to capture the Beagle Boys, who were running around in towering robots. Do you remember the orgin of Bubba Duck?
- CHIP 'N DALE: RESCUE RANGERS -- I never liked Dale. All he did was joke around and act stupid. Chip was a good leader. Gadget the mouse was really cool (she created the Rescue Ranger blimp/airplane. Zipper was always used as a scout. Monterray Jack was a good character, until he went on his cheese rampages.
