Unbreak My Hart (Part 5)--By Pat

Jonathan felt along the wall in darkness, hoping he would come to an opening soon.  His throat and his eyes burned from the dust in the air.  His leg continued to ache and he wondered if infection had set in.  At this point, however, it was the least of his worries.  He had to get outside the border of camp, if he was survive this nightmare.  As he had done throughout the past four months of this ordeal, Jonathan stayed focused on Jennifer.  The mere thought of seeing her and touching her was everything he needed to keep going.
The dark maze appeared to grow somewhat brighter and Jonathan picked up his pace with growing optimism.  Finally, he saw the end of the tunnel about 500 yards away.  He stopped and calculated his next move.  He listened closely to see if anyone was outside waiting for his capture.  Every move he made needed to be carefully executed.  Mustering all of his energy, Jonathan began running as fast as he could.  He ran and he ran and he ran, until he could run longer and collapsed when he finally reached the roadside.

The Mexican government officials phoned in the news that Jonathan Hart had been found.  He was flown to San Diego immediately to receive medical treatment for some minor injuries.  Jennifer was at Kurt Jameson’s lab when the phone call came.
“Mrs. H, I’ve been looking all over for you,” Max said breathlessly.  “They found Mr. H!!!”
Jennifer couldn’t speak.  Tears were streaming down her cheeks.  So many months of waiting, so much pain and now it was all over. Kurt watched her quizzically, wondering what she was hearing.  He put his arm around her shoulder in consolation.  They must have found his body, Kurt thought to himself.  He watched her beautiful face flush with emotion.
“Thank you, Max.  Yes, I’ll wait here for you to pick me up and we’ll drive down to San Diego together.”
Jennifer turned to Kurt, who had leaned closer to her.  “They found Jonathan.  He’s alive!”
Kurt took his arm down immediately.  His heart sank.  He felt ashamed for what he was thinking.

Jonathan waited in his hospital room for Jennifer to arrive. He could barely wait to see her again.  He had refused all pain medication because he didn’t want anything to get in the way of him seeing her clearly.  Suddenly, the door opened and Jennifer walked in.
They stared at each other for several moments, unable to speak.  Jennifer opened her mouth to say something, to say the words she had dreamed about saying all these long months, but nothing came out.  Tears streamed down her cheeks.  She ran into his waiting arms.  Jonathan kissed her forehead and then her lips.  He tasted the saltiness of her tears and could not stop kissing her.  Jennifer burrowed herself into his chest, holding on to him for dear life.  Finally, she kicked off her shoes and slipped into the hospital bed with him, where they laid for almost an hour, silently in each other’s arms.

Jonathan sat up in bed, waiting for Jennifer. Freeway snoozed at the end of the bed with his head resting on his paws, happy to see his master again. Max had gone out to play poker with Sammy and Little Joe, feeling as he put it “real lucky”.  Jennifer was getting ready for bed in the other room.  How fortunate can one man be, he thought to himself, to have a home, good friends, and ... Jennifer.  She was his best friend, his lover, his soulmate.
Jennifer finally entered the bedroom, wearing a light blue satin and lace negligee.  He thought she looked more beautiful than he had ever seen her - something about the wisdom in her eyes and the spirit in her heart.  She climbed into bed next to him, fluffing her pillow.
“I’m certainly glad that Manuel Lopes was caught, after all he put you through,” Jennifer said.  “Do you even remember the explosion on the ship?”
“No. I just remember someone calling for me on the radio to come to one of the engine rooms.  I thought they had found Manuel, but it was Manuel himself who was waiting there for me.  I heard the explosion and then something hit me on the head.  The next thing I remembered I was waking up in some underground camp.”
“Why did Manuel take you with him?”
“He knew if I were presumed dead that it would divert the Coast Guard and FBI’s attention for a while.  Plus, he thought he could get money and information about the shipping lines for future smuggling rings.”
Jennifer shook her head.  “It’s a good thing you were able to lead the authorities to the camp before Manuel got out of there.”
“Yeah. My Boy Scout training really came in handy,” Jonathan said, smiling.
“And what about Manuel’s accomplice...what was her name?  She looked like quite a character.”
“Yes, you could say that,” said Jonathan.  “Jessie...she was - how can I put it - very persistent .”
“Oh? How persistent?”  Jennifer looked at him with a sideways glance.
     Jonathan smiled boyishly. “Very.”
     “Oh,” Jennifer frowned.
“Why don’t you tell me about Kurt?”
“Kurt?  What’s to tell?”  Jennifer said, leery of his questioning.
Jonathan loved teasing her.  Jennifer rose to the occasion.
“He was a true gentlemen...very sensitive to my needs,” she smirked, fussing with the bed covers.
Jonathan leaned in close to her face.  “About these needs...,” he said playfully.
“Yes?”  Jennifer said, looking into his eyes.
“I’d like to take care of some of these needs,” he said taking her into his arms.
“You would?” she teased.  “Well, I’m very needy, you know.”
“Aha,” he said, pulling her down under him.

Jonathan and Jennifer made love, merging together their flesh and their souls...
     their love knowing no bounds...
together as they were meant to be...
the way we all know it should be.
