When I was young, if someone had told me I would be able to sit and write a letter to someone half-way around the world, and send it to them in the matter of seconds:...Well let's just say I would have thought it was the stuff of science fiction. Well in January of 1997 I bought a WEB-TV unit and suddenly the world was opening up to me in ways I would have never thought possible. It took me only a few weeks to find the amazing hobby of pen-paling on e-mail. I started with 4 selections from a pen-pal service. A young girl in Iceland, a Middle aged farmer in Denmark, a couple in Ausralia and a young couple in New Zealand. Soon my mailbox was getting mail from all over the planet. I was learning about cultures I most likely will never visit, and most imporantly I was making new friends. Now after two years, I continue to enjoy this hobby more than any other I have had in my lifetime. I still keep in contact with those original 4 pen-pals and have added to the list. With over 18 pen-pals my understanding of our world has increased greatly. Sceptics may say friendships such as these are not real, I disagree!! Even though I may never meet most of them in person, we have shared our hopes, lives and special moments. Maybe it was the birth of a child, a new job, or a problem they faced. To me that is as good of a definition of friendship as any. They write to Send Birthday Greetings, Christmas wishes or maybe just to say HI!! and send a joke to make me smile. No matter how gargarious you are, no matter where you live or what you do for a living, you can enjoy such friendships with a wider range of friends than you could meet in everyday life. The internet is shrinking the world so that global friendships are not only possible, but common. My friends live in such places as:England, India,Iceland, Germany, Australia , New Zealand, Alaska, Saskatoon Canada, Denmark,California, Croatia, Michigan,Holland and The Czech RepublicThe links below belong to some of the wonderful people I write to on a regular basis.
