L
iving along
the
shores of one
of the
Great Lakes both Karen and myself have
grown to love
lighthouses. From paintings to small
replicas our
livingroom is a tribute to these Guiding
Lights. Like silent monuments to a
simpler time
now past, Lighthouses still stand watch
over the
waterways of America and the world.
With all of
America's lighthouses now automated, and
many in
danger of deteriorating, efforts should
be made to
save these historic landmarks. In
our area we
have many of these lovely old
structures.Barcelona Harbor, Dunkirk's Point Gratiot, Fort Niagara, Presquel Isle, and the
Buffalo Harbor
light
are all within an hours drive of
us. On
October 28th 1998, Karen and myself were
lighthouse
keepers for a night, when we stayed
overnight in the
Historic Selkirk Lighthouse on the
shores of Lake
Ontario. There are only about a dozen
lighthouses in
the States that offer such an adventure.
This was a
birthday treat for Karen and was an
enjoyable, unique
experience that any lighthouse fan
should consider.
The accomidations are plain but
comfortable and the
house can hold upto groups of 10. The
rate per night
for a party of 2 is 110 dollars and
rates raise
somewhat higher for larger groups. The
best part was
having the run of this ancient structure
for the
night. The drive along Lake Ontario is
a pleasent
one, and there are several other lights
to be seen
withi a short drive of the Selkirk
Light. The Light
is located at the mouth of the Salmon
River where
great fishing awaits the Fall vistor as
well. Fully
equiped with all linens, appliences and
color TV, the
lighthouse is ready for you to move in
for the night,
day or week. Click HERE For a photo collection from
our stay.

Lighthouse"
Over the
years we have had the pleasure of
visiting other
lighthouses as well. Each one is unique
in it's
shape and location. We've been to the
lonely desolate
point where
Seul Choix light stands watch over
Lake Michigan.
We've watch the sunset over the
Straights of Mackinac
behind the historic Old Mac Light. Entering
Michigan over
the Blue Water Bridge one can see the
rare LightShip Huron docked at the
mouth of the
St.
Clair River, as well as Fort Gratiot lighthouseon the
shore of Lake
Huron. We've seen Round Island Lightfrom the ferry
to Michigan's
Mackinac Island. I spend at least one
sunrise each
year atSanilac harbor Lightduring a
visit to my aunt.
Recently we visited 30 Mile Point Lighthouse
in Sommerset,
Ny. This light was featured on the US
postage Stamp
collection of Great Lake Lighthouses a
few years back
On a Fall Trip to New England, we
visited
Nobska Light,near Wood's Hole, Mass.
Our favorite lighthouse visited, is
Nubble Lighton the coast of
Maine.
**NEW** 4/22/99. We
just returned from another trip to
Michigan and as always we made a point
to stop and see 2 more Lighthouses.
First was the Point Aux
Barques Tower
in
Lighthouse County park at the tip of
Michigan's thumb. Built in 1858 this
impressive tower is still in service and
houses a museum in the neighboring
buildings. Next was a visit to Harbor
Beach, where the Harbor Beach
light sits on the North Breakwater
of this harbor.
