What Ski Patrollers carry in their Packs

So, Have you ever wondered, as you're schussing down your favorite trail, what those guys with the white cross carry in their packs? You might actually be surprised at some of the junk we patrollers lug around! Of course, Nordic and Alpine patol packs differ, so here I will only focus on what Alpine Patrollers carry.


What National Ski Patrol recommends alpine patrollers carry in their patrol pack. (minimum)

  • 4 triangular bandages, folded as cravats
  • 2 rolls roller bandage
  • 6 bandaids
  • 1 roll 2 inch adhesive tape
  • 9 assorted sterile compresses
  • pocket knife (such as Swiss Army)
  • 4 large safety pins
  • Notebook and pen
  • Flow sheet & release of responsibility form
  • Flashlight
  • Paramedic shears
  • Several tongue blades
  • 2 pairs (at least!)of disposable rubber gloves
  • Pocket CPR mask or mouth sheild

    Additional considerations(from NSP):

    • 1 tube instant glucose
    • waterproof matches
    • cigarette lighter
    • "leatherman tool"
    • Wire or SAM splint*
    • Blood glucose test strips*
    • Avalanche cord/ Avalanche transceiver*
    • oropharyngeal airways
    • Map of Ski area
    • Fire starter
    • Ziplock bags
    • Ankle hitch*
    • seam ripper
      *= I don't carry these items- other wise everything above is in my pack!

      Additional "goodies" for a GREAT PACK!

      (and sore back- that is if you can even fit in everything you'd like to carry!)

      • A carabiner- great for all kinds of stuff!
      • Duct tape!
      • 50' of rope & 10' nylon webbing
      • Emergency silver foil blanket
      • whistle
      • sunscreen (for me)
      • chemical heat packs
      • a small turkey baster (great portable suction!)
      • headlight conversion strap for my mag light
      • small bungie cords
      • orienteering compass
      • ace bandage
      • Plus extra bandages, roller gauze, etc. than NSP recommends
