Fleurs de Shanghai, Les....... (Hai Shan Hua)......... (Hou Hsiao-hsien)
Taiwan 1998, 35mm, coul., 124 min., v.o. mandarine s.-t.f. sc. : Chu Tian-wen ph. : Lee Ping-bin mo. : Liao Ching-song mus. : Yoshihiro Hanno int. : Tony Leung, Michiko Hada, Michelle Reis, Carina Lau, Jack Kao
Metropolitan and cosmopolitan Shanghai at the end of the 19th century, under the reign of the Qing dynasty, as seen through the lens of one of the most important masters of contemporary Taiwanese cinema, Hou Hsiao-hsien (an FCMM regular, he has already presented, amongst others, his film Goodbye South, Goodbye in 1996). This year he returns with his latest work The Flowers of Shanghai, in which he captures the luxuriant ambience of the "flower houses", the elegant bordellos under British control that were a popular haunt for the city's male elite. Run according to their own rites and manners, men came here to relax around a mah-jong table, or to meet their courtesans, the flowers of Shanghai: radiant, gracious and, above all, free to make their own choices. The director paints a subtle, delicate and highly insightful picture of this complex universe.

Raise the Red Lantern (1991)......Director: Zhang Yimou...Starring: Gong Li
Zhang Yimou (Ju Dou) directed this fascinating, visually formal 1991 film about an educated woman (Gong Li) who is sent off to become the newest wife of a feudal nobleman in 1920s China. The relationships between her and her predecessors--all of whom live on the premises--and the interaction among the women, the servants, and their master are brilliantly played out.
