Bitter Sugar(1964)....... Director:Leon Ichaso (Cuba)... An idealistic pro-Castro Cuban student experiences simultaneous political and sexual awakenings after falling in love with a beautiful, talented, and intelligent dancer whose desperate circumstances require her to sell her cultivated body to sleazy foreign tourists. Elsewhere in his crumbling homeland, his free-spirited, principled brother languishes in a camp for the HIV-positive.
I am Cuba(1964)....... Director:Kalatzov (Cuba/Soviet Union)...From Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide Luz Maria Collazo, Jean Bouise. Sweeping, eye-popping ode to Cuba and the Castro revolution. Vignettes idealize hardworking but exploited peasants and Castro's staunch, freedom-loving revolutionaries, depicting Americans as decadent, sexist swine. And the images are consistently dazzling; the film demands to be seen and savored by any lover of pure cinema. Scripted by Yevgeny Yevtushenko and Enrique Pineda Barnet; released in the U. S. in 1995.
Guantanamera (1994)....... Director:Alea & Tabio (Cuba/Spain)...a very ingenious plot, combining elements from reality and fiction, Tomas Gutierrez Alea (Titon) shows the whole isle of Cuba and the socio-economic environment after the Cuban dollarization, the contrast between the dogmatic official position, and the hard reality of the Cuban people. Is a great monument to all anonimous Cubans struggling day after day for surviving in a very dogmatic and unfair society. To me it is very difficult to believe that the Cuban government let this movie be produced inside of Cuba, knowing that they try to control any negative information outside of the country about the Cuban society.
