SACHI, Hamano..... *In Search of Ozaki Midori*
About the Taisho-Showa novelist Ozaki, who was in the modernist limelight with Hayashi Fumiko and other to-be-famous women writers. After she started publishing at the age of 23 she released a series of short stories and the installment novel *Wandering in the Worlds of 7 Senses* . It's a feature, starring Yu Ai Ri, who was in 2/Duo last year, as the young Midori. It's a genre somewhere between realism and "fanta" (fantastic) and has a lot of the kind of doppelganger themes & representational styles we have come to know & love of Taisho modernism/modernity -- briefly here, 5 senses not being adequate......

Mochizuki, Rokuro

Born in Tokyo in 1957, Rokuro Mochizuki is little-known outside Japan, but he is without question the most fascinating representative of Japan's new independent avant-garde cinema. After beginning in erotic and pornographic films, Mochizuki gradually developed the financial credibility to make Skinless Night, the story of a porn videomaker who dreams of becoming a serious director. An enormous critical hit, this film launched his career. Mochizuki is not an frustrated aesthete forced into the "sub-genres" or formula films. On the contrary, he is unashamed of his background, feeling perfectly at home in the world of sex and crime, genres for which he can easily find backing and distribution in the moribund Japanese film industry of the 1990s. But his films also transcend the genre, digging deep into the moral issues that intrigue him most. A prolific filmmaker, he has shot twelve films in under a decade. Rokuro, which means "rock 'n roll" in Japanese, makes films in the image of his borrowed name: inventive, shattering, mind-blowing.

Masayuki Suo
Shall We Dance? (1996)....Starring: Koji Yakusyo, Tamiyo Kusakari
From his seat on a commuter train, a respected but downtrodden Tokyo office worker espies a beautiful woman in the window of a dance studio. Mesmerized, he signs up for ballroom dance instruction at the school, despite the threat of losing face by participating in such an "undignified" public spectable. However, he soon discovers that he has a natural aptitude--and a natural love--for dancing.

Lyrical, humanistic (if modestly produced) fable, set in the 12th century and based on a Kabuki play about a lord who is being hunted by his brother; he and six generals dress as monks and set out on a journey across a heavily fortified barrier.
