Husker Du started out punk and ended pop, but in between they released some of the best underground music of the eighties.

Their metamorphisis wasn't overnight, as hints to the band's new musical direction were evident in the presentation of the music. But after leaving the venerable indie label SST in 1986 and signing with Warner Bros. they had all but abondoned their punk roots in favor of a proto- alternative rock style, a la REM. The delivery was sonically more subtle, but they retained their hard edge in concert (give a listen to The Living End).

Because Husker Du signed with a major label and carried on with a more subdued sound, many of their fans labeled them sell-outs. What they didn't remeber is that even the best of the best punk/hardcore bands mellow their stance over the years and still maintain a large fan base (Bad Religion, Minutemen, Minor Threat/Ian MacKaye/Fugazi).

As one of the more diverse bands of the '80s underground scene, Husker Du literally has something to offer for everyone. Check out my album reviews for more information.

Also, check out All-Music Guide's informative history of the band. I insist you do the band justice by reading their AMG profile. After all, the preceeding was just a front for my album reviews.
