Check out the Minutemen's entry in the All-Music Guide if you're looking for a legitimate history of the band and their recordings. All I have to offer is impressions of the band and their music more than a decade after their demise. As I was seven years old when D. Boon died, I was a bit too young to appreciate this truly original band in their prime. The recordings that the Minutemen left behind, however, serve as a testament to the subtle and not-so-subtle power of true punk rock innovators, as well as present some of the more colorful philosophical and comical stances in rock history.
Most often classified as hardcore punk, San Pedro, CA's most famous trio did not live and die blindly by punk idealism. Not once on record did they reduce themselves to the juvenile sloganeering or ethos that dominated the lyrics and posturing of their peers. Instead, the Minutemen's songs were concise (often under a minute) bits of punk, pop, funk or folk with lyrics that, more often than not, consisted of bits of impressionistic poetry.
The Minutemen were one of the best "underground" bands of the 1980s
and I strongly urge
you check them out. And for your convienence I have prepared album
reviews of all their recordings, or you can refer to AMG's reviews.
