20 Questions with Kevin Lynch of Lynch

Friday night. Kevin Lynch floats in his '71 fleetwood, bouncing between Chelsea clubs where interested promoters wait to chat business. The curiosity over this Irishman and the rouges who comprise Lynch was generated by their anticipated, well attended performances at The knitting Factory, Mercury Lounge, Coney Island High and CBGB's , as well as a self-produced CD entitled Pumping Conga. The song effort was created almost entirely by Lynch & Craig Wehringer at their facility, Sterling Coat Studios, A former coat factory in Brooklyn. However, it is the energy of the Lynch live set that illuminates what is so great about Lynch's songs, and that is precisely what fuels the current buzz surrounding the band.

The whirling entourage accompanying us for this in-car interview prohibits our conference from ever really getting off the ground. Half full pint glasses of stout--lifted from earlier visited clubs--are past between passengers and drained. With professionalism evaporating into an advancing night, we both kind of slouch into the deep Caddy seating, agree to continue the interview elsewhere, and are content to enjoy the ride--an awaited ride which feels as though it is only beginning for Lynch and the members of Lynch.

Monday afternoon. We roll through the Greenwood Cemetery, home to such notable corpses as Alexander Graham Bell, John Steinway, and Lenard Berstein, who according to Lynch, is now "decomposing." Henry Berg, a founder of the ASPCA and relative to Lynch also rests here. "This place is like a living museum full of dead people."

I'm told about other infamous Lynch desendants, including Denis Tilden Lynch Author of Boss Tweed and a grandfather who conducted an armed robbery of the brooklyn battery Tunnel's toll booths, weeks after the tunnel's inception. The stolen armored car was driven to the Greenwood Cemetery--our present locale--where his crime was foiled before the truck could be rid of its loot. ( Never being caught or having done time ) With his family's penchant for criminal activity on the table, I engaged Lynch in a series of twenty questions, wondering about his own record.

Indiescent--Ever arrested ?

Kevin Lynch--Yeah. I was going to Alice and I got pulled over for driving on the wrong side of the road. I thought I was back in Ireland, but I was in New Jersey. The cop asked if I had anything illegal, and I said, 'yeah, I got half a joint in my cigarette pack. ' They hand--cuffed me, took me in, did the whole nine yard deal, and then they took me back to the concert. Then Cooper comes on and says, 'anybody out there ever been in jail? This songs for you."
