Welcome to the Neighborhood

Here is a poem that has been stuck in the back of my mind since 1975. This may be a published work, but I think that it is the answer to an eight grade school assignment turned into to the English teacher (MRS. Deborah Williford) at Wetumpka High School, Wetumpka Alabama. I found this in the classroom the same week we were doing this assignment. On the bottom of the page was a remark (from the teacher?) of "Great Cindy!" I have actively looked for this poem off and on over the years since. It sounds like the work of Catherine Elizabeth Norton, Very similar to "The Soldier of the Rhine" If you have ever heard this before or know definitively that it is a published work please post to my email.

DEAR MOM

It's awful cold and damp here, Mom_________And the food is not too good

The mud is thick and deep here_____________And stained with human blood

Got a bullet in my leg, Mom__________________But it doesn't hurt too much

When I see a child crawl by me___________________Without a leg or crutch

They're coming over the hill now, Mom_________A hundred thousand strong

And no matter how hard we fight or pray_____We won't hold them off too long

Tell my little girl , Mom__________________________That I had to go away

Tell her not to cry, Mom_______________________I'll see her again someday

Tell Bobby not to worry, Mom_____________You and Daddy please be brave

And when they bring me home, Mom____________Put OL'Glory on my grave

I don't regret the things I did___________________Or the things that I did see

I'd fight and die all over again____________________For to save democracy

I know it's kind of hard, Mom___________________To break the News this way

But I had to Say "I Love You"_________________________Before I went away

So anyway write me if you have heard this before...If this Poem belongs to someone I will remove it. The Background music is, of course, Amy Grant. It is not my Favorite by her but the best that I have found so far. If anyone has the midi or RA of "If these walls could speak" by Amy Grant, I will fax you a thousand dollar bill for it.
