O'Reily felt that Ozou was setting him up and arranged for him to be locked in the gym with two Latinos. Ozou subsequently killed one Latino and was placed on Death Row. With help from Kareem Said and Father Ray Mukada, McManus convinced Governor Devlin to grant Ozou a stay of execution so that he could donate one of his kidneys to his dying sister. The operation was a success and Ozou's sister lived. Ozou became the first person to be executed in the state since the 1960s.
