THE FACTS-PART THREE:BIOLOGY

FACT NO.1: Viruses are not living organisms. Cells are composed of enzymes and other important parts to carry out life functions. Viruses lack these important characteristics that make a cell alive. A virus is composed of a protein coat and a nucleic acid core. The core could be made up of a single molecule consisting of five genes, or a multimolecular core made up of several hundred genes. The viruses only function is to reproduce by invading living cells. A viruses nucleic acid core uses the cell's nucleic acid to create more virus particles. This process continues until no more virus particles can fit in the cell host's body, thereby causing the host to burst and release the new virus particles. These new virus particles continue the process of their parent virus.

FACT NO.2: Seaweeds are not plants. Seaweeds are composed of unicellular organisms known as algae. Algae, belonging to the protist kingdom, possess the green pigment chlorophyll; therefore, they are able to carry on the process of photosynthesis. The red, green, and brown algae form the thalloid (flat) forms known as seaweed. These forms, found in marine waters, include the oarweeds, bladder wracks, and the extremely tall kelp.

FACT NO.3: Most bacterial forms are helpful to man. It is well known throughout the scientific community that some bacteria cause specific diseases. These organisms can cause diseases ranging from leprosy and syphilis to Q fever and tuberculosis. But most bacteria are harmless and useful. Some of these bacteria cause organic material to decay and release nitrates into the soil; these nitrates are beneficial to plants. Others help in the production of pickled foods, vinegar, and even some vitamins. The dairy industry depends on some bacteria to ripen and give special flavors to a variety of cheeses. But the most important use of bacterial organisms is in medicine. Antibiotics, meaning "against life", are made using certain forms of bacteria that fight against infection and other human ailments.

FACT NO.4: The human body is composed of over one trillion cells! There are different types of cells which carry out specific functions. Nerve cells carry nerve signals to the brain; muscle cells contract for muscular function; blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body; white blood cells fight infection; bone cells aid in the growth of the skeletal structure; cells, known as rods and cones, carry out visual processes; and sex cells (sperm and ova) come together to star a new life. The complexity of the human body points to the Creator.
