"I HAVE TO GET MY HANDS DIRTY" said the not-so-ginger former Spice Girl an October press conference announcing her appointment as a UN goodwill
ambassador. Those would be the same hands that once pinched the royal buttock of a
surprised Prince Charles. But that was the old Ginger Spice, who stomped around in platform boots and a crotch-baring Union jack microfrock and had a string of hits
popular with teens and teenies. In May, that demographic was left shaking its pigtails at the news that Geri Halliwell and the Girls were not stomping in the same
direction. Citing "personal differences" with the band, Halliwell, 26, handed in her platforms. "There were adult reasons why I left, but our fans were children and I didn't
want to shatter their dreams," she told The Sunday Times magazine Style last month. Confessing to a "lonely time," Halliwell was given shelter by singer George
Michael - "he offered me a hand of friendship, love and support" - while she caught her breath, lost a few kilos and set herself up as a solo act with a reportedly
multimillion-dollar record deal. Her UN role of promoting women's health and contraception is given extra resonance by a breast cancer scare she had at age 18."I've
realised that I can't just fulfill my own ego and ambition and this year I'm trying to do some good," said Halliwell. "I think I was meant to be an evangelist in girl power
and it's my absolute dury to empower women." There was barely a whiff of the old Spice days when, in demure navy, she performed a Monroe-esque "Happy Birthday" at
Prince Charles's gala 50th-birthday, concert in Octoher. One wonders if his cheek felt nostalgic for a pinch of Ginger.
