I have always loved art in any form; pastels, oils, ink, pencil, charcoal,
quash, tempra, acrylics, watercolors, and the myriad textures and depths
of so many other media. I started drawing when I could first hold
a pencil and haven't stopped. Although I have no formal training,
I have studied at Cobleskill College in upstate NY (evening division) and
have been fortunate to attend workshops with some the finest artists in
the US.
The first teacher to seriously influence me was
Peter Prince.
Peter
was my highschool art teacher. He encouraged my artwork and talent, entering
one of my pen and ink scratch boards in a state competition (which I won).
My first watercolor teacher was
Karen Rosaco
, a renowned artist
and member of the American Watercolor Society. On the first night
of classes we were to paint a simple watercolor scene. I still have that
disaster. How she saw any merit or talent in that crude painting
is beyond me. My 4½ year old grand daughter paints better
than that first mess I made. But, somehow, Karen saw with the eyes
of a mentor and friend. She encouraged me and supported me. I will
forever be in her debt.
Bernie Gerstern
of Rockport, MA was the second major influence in
my journey. He taught me new techinques, and gave me the ability
to see beyond what was in front of my eyes. We shared many hours
in Rockport between our galleries. I always felt proud and humbled
when Bernie would compliment my work. His art was so wonderful and I
thought my was rank amateur next to his. But Bernie encouraged, taught, scolded
and lead me for serveral years. Thank you Bernie.
The third person to have a major influence on my work is
Frank Webb
,
another respected and sought after artist. Frank gave me the courage
to be bold and open and daring in my use of color and form.
The painting "
Covered Bridge
" was inspired by Frank after a workshop.
"
Lobster Boats
" and "
Fishing Boats 2
" were also influenced
by Frank's teaching.
Please enjoy your trip through the gallery. And if you do enjoy,
please take a moment to let me know.
