A Message To Adult Pagans

I think I should say right away that I do recognize that there are many adult pagans who accept and support young pagans. However, there are also many who do not. I have had too many experiences with adult pagans who have dismissed me as nothing but a "young wannabe." When I go into the one store in my area that has any magickal supplies of use, I am always greeted with a half-mocking, half-disdainful look from the person at the register and the adult clientele. This really hurts. You would think that since pagans face so much predjudice in the first place, they would understand how bad it makes one feel and would fight to make it stop, instead of turning around and returning to the youth of their kind.

I suppose that there are many young people attracted to Wicca and other branches of paganism because of that oh-so-famous movie The Craft. And maybe others are only interested in it because of the lure of magick, love spells, and such. But I can assure you that from my experience I have found that these are not in the majority. As for myself, I do not perform much magick- I'm not at the point in my studies where I am ready for that yet. I once performed a spell way back in the beginning of my studies- a wind summoning spell- and it kind of backfired on me. We had a tiny little tornado in my area. I decided to wait a while and learn to control my powers before trying anything of that nature again. I do a lot of herbal stuff- mostly teas and simples for healing sick friends and relatives. I do not do any black magick or love spells- I am aware of the ethics of these.

Besides all that, young people are very important to the Craft. As with anything else, the youth of this world are the future of Wicca. Magick or not, adult pagans will not live forever. If youth do not take an interest in paganism, it will most certaintly die out- and with that the goddess and the magick within us all will fade away. I urge you, for one moment, to look away from yourselves and see the future of the Craft as it will be without young people finding it. That future is nothing.

Once again, I do understand that there are adult pagans who support pagan youth, and to them a million thank-you's. I appreciate it more than you can know.
