Chicago's Michael Jordan was named the 1997-98 NBA Most Valuable Player on Monday, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Russell as the only five-time MVPs. The Chicago Sun-Times reports on how the legendary Russell made a surprise appearance to present the MVP trophy to Jordan.

Dikembe Mutombo edged Seattle's Gary Payton by two votes for the 1997-98 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award, making the Hawks center the first three-time winner of the award.
