Brigid Veronica Corrigan of Flushing, New York, on reaching her 100th birthday, February 21, 2002. God Bless her. May the road rise to meet her and the wind be always at her back and may God always hold her in the palm of his hand.
Mrs. Corrigan was born in Magheraboy, Kilmovee, County Mayo, Ireland on February 21, 1902, to Martin and Catherine Duffy Rush. She was one of eight children, all of whom are deceased.
Brigid Rush immigrated to America in the spring of 1922, arriving in New York by way of Liverpool, England, on the White Star liner "Celtic."
Over an eight year period Brigid had worked as a live-in for one of America's wealthy families, the Whitneys. During this time she had working experiences in their New York City, Oyster Bay, and Millbrook, New York, homes..
Vacationing from work, Brigid returned to Ireland in 1930, her first trip back to visit her parents. While there, she was to meet her husband to be, Robert Corrigan. He, as like Brigid had been in America also. He having returned some time previous to assume ownership of his father's 22 acre farm in Kiltobranks, Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon. His father was Michael Corrigan and mother Brigid, formerly, Brigid Flynn, great-aunt of Bishop Flynn who headed the Roman Catholic diocese of Archonry until his retirement.
Brigid Rush and Robert Corrigan were soon to wed and began a family. They started
a small enterprise to supplement the income that was to be realized from their
farming acreage. Sensing a need for a community center Robert's ingenuity led him to create what
became fondly known as "Corrigan's Dance Hall." It met with success and proof of its
usefullness just to cite but one obvious benefit, in boy meeting girl situations. Those
who experienced the music of bandleaders of that era have most assuredly wonderful
memories to draw from.
Oh! to dream of .....
Sadly, on March 27, 1937, at age thirty-eight Robert died of pneumonia and heart failure, never full realizing the measure of his work. He is buried beside his parents in Lisacul cemetery, Castlerea, County Roscommon.
In 1960, Mrs. Corrigan, sold her farm and moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. to be with her children and their families. She became an American citizen on November 30, 1965, moved to Flushing ten years later where she still resides.
Mrs. Brigid Corrigan's five children are: daughter
Mary Philomena Riney of Suffern, N.Y., John of Jackson, N.J., Robert
of Woodside, N.Y., and twins Martin of Flushing and Catherine Monica
(Mona) Quere of Whitestone, N.Y.
Senders of Congratulatory wishes were; President George W. Bush, Honorable Governor,
George Pataki, Honorable Benjamin Gilman and Honorable NY State Senator, Frank Padavan.
To family and friends who expressed their very best wishes, in a variety of
ways, to honor Brigid's milestone, we sincerely thank you one and all..
May she now Rest in Peace.
