Chapter Nine

Keith stared at his plate hypnotically. Across the table, Romelle and Sven exchanged concerned glances. She opened her mouth to address the issue, but Sven put a finger to his mouth, signaling her to leave Keith alone. She shrugged and went back to her food.

"Have you contacted Arus?" Sven asked.

Keith shook his head.

"Don't you want them to know that you're alright?" Romelle inquired.

"Have you gotten in touch with them?" Keith demanded, looking up from his plate and pinning them with an annoyed stare.

"No need to get ornery," she said, an edge to her voice.

The Voltron commander stood, his chair scraping against the floor. "Excuse me," he said as a muscle in his cheek jumped. "I think I'll be going to bed now."

"But..." Romelle began.

Sven clamped a hand onto her arm and held on tightly. She pressed her lips together, but not before throwing him a glare.

"Good night, Keit."

Keith left without a word. When the doors hissed shut behind him, Romelle smacked Sven's arm. He winced.

"Just leaf him alone, Romelle," he said. "He can't deal with all dis at von time."

"Oh come on, Sven! He's the leader of the Voltron Force. He's the personification of problem solving."

Sven sighed. "Not when it comes to matter like dis."

Romelle rested her chin in her hand thoughtfully. "I just can't stand to have them separate."

"She iz coming, you know."

"What?"

"Allura iz coming. She vill be here soon."

Romelle blew out a breath. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"I was afraid dat you would tell Keit in your anger and den he would leaf."

"I'm not going to say anything. I just hope that he doesn't come out of his room bright and early tomorrow morning."

Sven had to laugh at that. "Not our honorable Commander Keit!"

Romelle smirked. "We'll see."

Romelle met her cousin on the tarmac as Sven had met Keith the day before. Allura stepped out of the ship with a tired smile and hugged her.

"You look terrible," Romelle said, the fondness in her tone belying her words.

"Thanks."

"He's asleep."

Allura looked towards the castle, her brow furrowed in nervousness and fear. She clenched her hands and tried to move her feet. They weren't responding.

"Not you too," Romelle cried. She put two hands on Allura's back and pushed. "GO! For my sanity's sake, go!"

"What if..."

Romelle stopped pushing. "I swear, you two have the lowest self-esteem I've ever seen. For two very powerful people, you can be so weak sometimes."

Allura wrung her hands and began to pace a circle around her cousin. "I'm just nervous. It feels like we've been through so much...I've been through so much these past two days. I just don't know how to handle it just yet."

She looked at Romelle with wide blue eyes. "I've never fallen in love before."

"Join the club," she replied wryly. "Allura, face this like you've faced everything else. You have everything to win." She smiled reassuringly. "He's on the second floor, the last door on the right."

Taking a deep breath, Allura marched into the castle.

Keith's eyes flew open and he froze. Fortunately for him, the floor was not carpeted or else he would never have heard the intruder enter. He held his breath as the footsteps neared him, the old floor boards creaking accordingly. In a blur of blankets, he leapt up and grabbed the intruder, wrapping him in the sheets. A fist struck out and hit him squarely in the nose, but he kept his arms around the moving bundle. He frowned. From what he could tell, his intruder was a woman. From the sounds coming from through the blankets...

"Allura?"

He let go and let her find her way out of his trap. She brushed her disheveled hair from her face and looked at him. She felt her lips tremble. He looked so good that it hurt. He didn't seem to know what to do so he was frozen where his stood, his mouth moving but nothing coming out. He twitched as if he wanted to reach out for her, but knew that he shouldn't. Without another thought, she threw herself at him. After a moment's hesitation, he wrapped his arms around her tightly.

"I missed you," she murmured in his ear.

He didn't say anything, but just held her. Nothing had ever felt so right. Before he knew it, her lips had found his and his pulse sped. They tumbled into bed and threw all caution out the window. Two days worth of fretting had worn Keith's reserve down and he didn't want to think anymore. The feeling of Allura's soft hands touching him distracted him and he gave in to his impulses. Sighing happily, she did the same. The night fled without either of them noticing.
