Part Four
They exchanged their vows in their
garden on a perfect autumn day surrounded by their families and close
friends. It was small and intimate, and
exactly what they wanted. Keith had
guards posted around the property to ensure their privacy and he seemed to
enjoy holding one over the media’s head for once.
“I’m happy you two worked things
out,” he said to Link as they mingled around the garden, eating and talking. “I don’t think my liver would have taken much
more.”
“Allura sure wasn’t,” she said, and
she kissed his cheek. “Thank you for
being there for him.”
“Thank you for taking him out of my
hands.”
Lance sidled up to them, his arm
going around his wife’s waist.
“I’d go see to Allura if I were
you,” he said to Keith. “Her feet are
aching and she’s got that look in her eye that means someone’s head is going to
roll.”
“I just keep reminding myself that
she’s having our child,” Keith muttered as he went to his own wife.
Lance’s grin was infection and Link
found herself chuckling.
“Promise me you’ll be nothing but a
pleasure when you’re pregnant,” he said.
“Hmm…I wish I could.”
“I’ve got something for you,” he
said, digging into his pocket.
“But I thought we agreed to…”
“I hate rules.”
Link’s arguments were forgotten when
she saw what he held up. At the end of
the short silver chain in his hand was a red stone. She took it between thumb and index finger to
get a closer look and her lips parted with awe.
It was a small lion’s head, the detailing on it intricate and delicate,
and it seemed to her that it was smiling.
Then she turned it over and she saw that there was a little plaque with
the words Remember Us engraved on
it. Her eyes teared.
“Do you like it?” he asked, a tad
nervously.
“I love it,” she breathed. “Would you…?”
He unclasped it and put it around
her neck.
“Where did you get it?” she asked,
fingering it.
“Um.”
She looked at him
suspiciously.
“He made it,” Gwen said,
overhearing.
Link’s eyes widened. “You did?
Really?”
“Who knew he had the patience,
right?” Gwen said, nudging her brother.
“Go away, will you?” Lance said,
nudging back.
As Gwen sauntered away, Link stared
up at him, shaking her head.
“Unbelievable,” she said.
Lance rubbed the back of his neck,
embarrassed. Standing on her toes, she
pressed a kiss against his lips.
“Thank you,” she said.
He smiled and was about to go in
for a better kiss when the music started.
Their guests watched them expectantly, waiting for them to open the
dance. Lance held out a hand for her to
take.
“It might not be our first dance or
our last,” he said. “But it’s gonna be a
good one.”
She moved into his arms and as they
began to sway, she knew she would never need to be told to remember them.
Twenty-two
years later…
Link smiled as she remembered the
wedding day that she and Lance had chosen to celebrate instead of their first
one. It would embarrass Jack to no end
if she ever mentioned it, but she was sure that was the night that he was
conceived. They had their fights, but
nothing like their short separation happened again and they rarely were apart
from on another in twenty-two years of marriage.
Except for now.
But the memory was like a warm
blanket around her and Link finally closed her eyes. She could see Lance in her mind’s eye and
knew that he was thinking of her too.
