89. Why do the tours change lyrics?
90. How can I get backstage at RENT?
91. Will pretending I’m a pizza delivery guy help me get backstage?
1.Who was Justin?
Justin WAS the line guy and lobby patrol. He pulled lottery and ran the line. He is in his 20’s, lanky, and bitter. (So was said) He no longer pulls lotto. He left in ’99, I think.
2. Who was Joel?
Joel was a very big RENT fan in his 30’s. He’s a law student, and had seen the show many, many times. Last I heard he had seen it 800 or so times. He did the line as well as lotto. Some liked him, some didn’t, some thought he was sleazy. If you ever meet him, you can decide for yourself. He has returned to seeing the show, you can catch him there on an almost daily basis probably. He plans to hit 1,000 on his birthday.
3. Who are Pete and Joell? Kim? Sonny?
Pete and Joell are the new lotto guys who’ve been there since Justin left. Pete is extremely nice and will take pictures, on the other hand, Joell is also extremely nice, a bit of a wise ass sometimes, but nice, but don’t EVER take his picture. Your chances of winning lotto are reduced. LOL (no I don’t have proof of this, but he HATES cameras, computers, and all other technology.) Pete had big curly hair until Jan. ’01, then he shaved it off, and has a buzz-cut type thing now. Kim is an usher who is almost ALWAYS at the theatre and takes tickets at the entrance of the theatre. She is vertically challenged (LOL) and has red hair. If you’re a regular and you jokingly ask her where to go, she’ll tell you ‘I don’t tell people that. Especially people like you.’ Or ‘you know where to go.’ Sonny is another usher that is sometimes at lotto if Pete or Joell aren’t there. He resembles Pete a lot I think. He’s very nice as well. He’s usually always an usher.
4. Who are Krystal and John?
Krystal Huntington & John Vivian are the stage managers at RENT. Krystal is nice, but if you scream ‘too much’ John will come out at intermission and tell you to stop screaming.
5. Who is Josh Schall?
Josh Schall is Anthony Rapp’s former boyfriend, I have no indication as to whether or not they’re still together. But he was a VERY nice person. He is a playwright. You can visit his website at:
6. Who are Kenny and Jeff?
Kenny and Jeff are two members of the band. They are my two favorites. Not many know who Jeff is, he’s the drummer. He’s very cool. Kenny is who everyone loves. He’s also amazing and extremely cool. He’s VERY popular with the RENTheads. And not to mention an AWESOME guitar player that has a REALLY cool pink guitar that he plays during the show. J
7.Who was David Driver?
David Driver was an u/s for Roger on Broadway.
8. Who was Sean Keller?
Sean Keller was the original Roger in the angel cast, but he is no longer with the cast. Some people said that his voice sucked. Someone on the web you can find an MP3 of him…. If I get a link to it I’ll link it here.
9. Who was Darius De Haas?
Darius was a u/s in the broadway cast, but he left the show. Some people think that it wasn’t fair that when Jesse left for a month and a half instead of letting Darius play Collins, they brought in Mark Leroy Jackson. Those people were further enraged when they saw MLJ perform.
10. How do I unsubscribe from this list?

11. What’s a newbie?
If you don’t know, you probably are one. This is a term used to categorize people who are new to a RENT list, board, or just new to the show.
12. What’s a flame?
A flame is a mean or insulting email or post on a message board or list.
13. What’s a flame war?
A flame war is a series of flames exchanges between people.
14. what is lurking?
Lurking is not posting on a board or email list for a few months when you first sign on.
15. if I’m a newbie, should I do this?
Yes, I’d advise you to do this. For at least a month, if not more. It will save us all a lot of posting space and mail box space.
16. Is Manley Pope leaving really soon? I heard he was!
Please, stop with this question. No one knows for sure. Some of us would like him to leave, some of us wouldn’t. When we know, YOU’LL know.

17. How can I get cheap tickets for the Broadway show?
Normal orchestra level tickets are $85, but there are several ways to get tickets at less than the face price.
A. Lottery (aka lotto)
From the Rent website:
Two hours prior to each performance, 34 $20 tickets will be sold by lottery in front of the theatre. There is a limit of two per person.
These tickets are located in the first two rows of the orchestra and must be paid for in cash. Here are the details:
* You will have to print your name and number of tickets you want on a
card which we will provide. One card per person.
* Limit of two tickets per person.
* Cards will be available starting at 5:30 pm for 8:00 PM shows, 11:30 am for the 2:00 PM matinees and 5:00 PM for the 7:00 PM show on Sunday.
* Cards will be placed in a container.
* Daily drawings will be held at 6:00 PM for 8:00 PM shows, 12:00 noon for the matinees and at 5:30 PM for the Sunday evening performance.
* After the names have been drawn, the eligible tickets buyers will line up at the box office window to show proper identification and buy their ticket.
* After the lottery, no more $20 tickets will be available for that performance, so we suggest that you leave the area. Camping out all day or overnight on the sidewalk is no longer permitted or recommended
as everyone wishing to enter the lottery will have an equal opportunity at the proper time.
* This applies to the Broadway production of Rent only.
B. SRO (Standing Room Only)
If a performance is sold out, $20 standing room tickets are available at the box office on the day of the show. The space for standing room is directly behind the last row of the orchestra (floor) section. Yes, you do stand for the duration of the show (about 2 hours, 40 minutes), but there's a counter-like area that you can lean on.
C. TKTS
The TKTS booth at 47th and Broadway often offers same-day tickets to Rent at 25-50% off. These tickets aren't great seats, but they're usually in the orchestra section.
D. Other
Occasionally other discounts are promoted at the official website.
18. How can I get cheap tickets for the tour?
A select number of orchestra seats (usually in the front two rows) will be on-sale for $20 per seat on the day of each performance. There is a
limit of two tickets per person, cash only, and tickets are sold two hours before performance time. People usually line up pretty early since
these seats are limited.
Note that these policies sometimes change depending on the individual venue.

21. What is the cancellations line?
This line usually forms after lotto if the show is sold out. People buy the tickets that were originally sold at the box office and then canceled on.
22. Where is Rent playing?
Rent is playing on Broadway in New York City at the Nederlander Theatre, 208 West 41st Street, between 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue. The performance
schedule varies according to the time of year, so check the Rent website for the current schedule.
23. Where can I meet cast members before or after the show?
It's usually easier to meet cast members after the show, since before a performance, they may be trying to focus on the show and not in the mood to
chat. After a performance, most cast members will come out and meet with fans, although on any given day some may need to rush off to other commitments or may not be in the mood to be sociable. Be polite and
remember that their obligation to you ended when they ran off stage.
Not everyone enjoys smiling for pictures and making small talk every night.
To meet cast members, just wait outside the doors to the Nederlander. After anywhere from 10-30 minutes, the cast members start to come out, some individually, others in groups. Note that on days when two performances are scheduled, some cast members will opt to stay inside the theater during the break between shows.
24. What's with the tour names (like "Collins Tour")? The North American tours have been named after the major characters in the show, in alphabetical order. The first tour was the Angel Tour, then the Benny Tour. The Canadian Tour was unofficially referred to as the Collins Tour by fans, but this name appears not to have stuck, as the official site refers to the current tour as the Collins Tour.
25. I heard Rent is closing. Is this true?
No. Well, it'll close someday, but not anytime soon. (We hope.)
26. Why is mark in contact if he doesn’t have a significant other?
Mark is under the sheet in contact even though he doesn’t have a lover, because he is masturbating. Anthony Rapp says so.
27. Why does Maureen say ‘I think I missed, don’t get pissed”?
There are varied answers to this. Some say that she missed with a vibrator or dildo, but some think this is dumb. She wouldn’t THINK she missed, she’d KNOW. Others say that she thinks she missed the dental dam or barrier they were using, but don’t get pissed, because she also doesn’t think that put Joanne in any danger.
28. What religion is Mark?
Mark’s religion was probably modeled after Jon Larson’s own religion, or lack there of. Therefore, it is generally thought that the Cohen (you couldn’t guess with a last name like that anyways? LOL) family is Jewish (not half and half or anything) and that the reason they gather at Christmas is not to celebrate a Christian holiday, but simply just to have a family gathering.
29. What does ‘no you cut the paper plate’ mean?
In ‘we’re ok’ Joanne is talking to three different people, and when she says that line, she’s talking to Maureen and says ‘yes I have the cowbell’, so it is believed that she is referring to another prop, a paper plate, that she has cut from the performance. (fun fact: at Jesse’s last show, Fredi dropped the line entirely replacing it with ‘I wanna slap you in the face!!’.)
30. Why does Roger say ‘what’d you forget?’ in the beginning of LMC?
He’s answering the door and he’s assuming that it’s mark returning to get something he forgot. In the workshop it was that he said ‘i’m not going.’ Under the same circumstances that Mark had returned.
31. What is stoli?
Stoli is vodka.
32. What is mercurochrome?
Mercurochrome is an orange fluid that you put on cuts to heal them. It stains your skin bright red/orange.
33. Is the cat imagry in the show confusing?
From mimi (feline of ave. b) to Joanne (kitten) to Maureen (cat suit), it’s all unclear.
34. Why, in x-mas bells, does mark say ‘maureen?’ when Roger says ‘there that’s here!’ and they’ve been talking about mimi!
It’s a line that was left over from the workshop. Lines were cut out where Mark talks about Maureen and roger talksa bout Mimi. The part left is roger talking about mimi. But it’s good. Later in the show during the finale when Maureen yells ‘mark, roger, anyone, help!’ the lines ‘maureen?’ ‘mimi!’ echoes this part so nicely.
35. Who are the backups in OTM?
Whoever’s playing Soloist 1 and Alexi Darling. I’ve also seen Mark’s Mom doing it before.
36. Do people really moo at the end of OTM?
Yes. Mostly lotto, but a good amount of the orchestra and less of the balcony does it too.
37. Do all the Mimi’s do the same dance for OT?
No. Daphne’s was done almost entire on the bars, and she had glitter in her hair that she shook out. Marcy’s dance is similar but she doesn’t do as much on the bars because she’s afraid of heights and she claimed she was not allowed too because of the danger involved. She doesn’t use glitter often. Yassmin does very little of the dance on the bars, she’s afraid of heights too. She did do glitter. Simone changed her dance from the OBC from when she went on tour. She took out a lot of the ‘80’s dance moves’ and it was said to have improved a lot. She doesn’t use glitter though, and people don’t think she was flexible enough. Julie Dano’s OT was similar to daphne’s and yaz’s. She uses glitter. She doesn’t get on the rail much because the union doesn’t let her, it’s too dangerous. No one really heard anything positive about Cheri Smith’s (angel tour) as Mimi. She does do glitter, and that’s said to be the most positive thing about her performance. ::shrug:: Julia Santana’s OT is very inconsistent. She doesn’t do much on the bars. She sometimes is stiff and doesn’t move much at all. Her voice is sometimes before whinny. She doesn’t use glitter.
38. Do all Rogers do knee bends? Yes to some extent. Adam does great knee bends. Norbert does more subdued knee bends. And Roger’s from the tours have known to look constipated while doing the squatish knee bends. And many people LOVE Manley Pope’s knee bends.
39. Do all maureens do the same OTM?
No. Some of them are very different. Idina’s was very original, of course. Kristen’s was very original as well. Yassmin and Tamara also had original OTM. Kendra’s was partly original but some movements were similar to Cristina’s. Cristina’s was partly original too.
40. Do all rogers play guitar?
Some better than others. Adam played it great, being that he is a musician. Norbert tried really hard, he played a simpler version of YE. Sean Keller played very well. Christian Anderson did it very well too. Manley Pope used to be TERRIBLE at playing the guitar (especially in the tour) but now on broadway he has improved and plays at gigs often. (manleypope.com)
41. What are swings?
Swings are understudies that can cover many roles but don’t have a regular part to play every day. Jai enjoyed having this title on Broadway for quite a few years before finally accepting the role of ‘Angel’. Yassmin Alers was the SUPER-SWING at RENT for 5 and ½ years. She covered Mimi, Maureen, Mark’s Mom, Paul, Steve, SOL 1, SOL 2, and Alexi.
42. When Angel says ‘Boys like me’ in You’ll See, is he referring that Collins likes boys like him or that boys like him?
After much debate, the conclusion has been that Angel is referring to boys similar to himself. It’s not a question for Collins, because there is no question mark in the libretto.
43.Are there ever any RANDOM people on the stage?
Yes. At the end of Christmas Bells when Maureen enters on her ‘motorcycle’ a random stagehand walks out with the light behind her and then ‘Joanne’ or ‘Gordon’ usually stands infront of the person, but you can still see the person. And sometimes a random stagehand comes out of the trapdoor to close it. In the ‘Press Reels’ after the line ‘To beign an us for once, instead of a them’ and on the line ‘la vie boheme’ there is a random guy on the stage. He’s wearing a red bandanna. Nice editing, guys.
44. How did Jonathan Larson die? I heard he had AIDS.
Jonathan Larson died as a result of an undiagnosed aortic aneurysm.
There was no indication that he had HIV or AIDS.
45. What are Jonathan Larson's other works?
Jonathan Larson wrote several pieces presented Off-Broadway, wrote songs
for Sesame Street, and created music for a number of children's book
cassettes, including Steven Spielberg's An American Tail and
Land Before Time.
tick, tick...Boom!, another musical he wrote before he worked on Rent,
played Off-Broadway at the Jane Street Theatre from May 2001 to
January 2002, and will likely tour North America in early 2003.
46.Are idina and taye together?
Yes, and they are engaged.
47.How old is daphne?
Good question! Much like the old question “how many luicks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?” the world may NEVER know. Many people believe that she is much older than she claims to be. We KNOW all the articles say she is in her late 20’s, but that fact is disputed. I know while looking at OLD articles of the OBC (mainly Newsweek and TONY), there were 2 articles from one week and then one was from the next week. One article said she was 25, the next said she was 27. So maybe she ages by weeks? Who knows.
48. What is Anthony Rapp’s email address? Daphne’s? Adam’s?
Anthony: anthodeane@aol.com
Daphne: daphnespeaks@att.net
Adam: adampascal@shkboom.net
49. Why wasn’t Simone in the bible?
Good question. Simone wants an answer to that as well. She was an original understudy in the broadway. And although she was no longer with the cast when the book was released, the book claims to represent the cast on opening night, so Simone should’ve been included. Some fans describe her attitude about it as bitter. She apparently refuses to sign anyone’s rent book, but she’ll autograph anything else.
50. Was Simone part of the OBC?
Yes.
51. What is ‘tidina’?
This is a common reference made when talking about Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs.
52. What’s a car whore?
This is referring to a cast member who will get a ride with anyone and asks random fans to give him a wherever he/she wants to go. (this does not commonly happen anymore.)
53. What are the cast member abbreviated names?
DRV: Daphne Rubin Vega, WJH: Wilson Jermaine Heredia, JEP: John Eric Parker, TEP: Todd E. Pettiford, Ant: Anthony Rapp, KLK: Kristen Lee Kelly, Yaz: Yassmin Alers, Seb: Sebastian Arcelus. MLJ: Mark Leroy Jackson, MFR: Mark Richard Ford.
54. Is [cast member] gay? Are [cast member] and [cast member] dating?
Possibly. Only they know for sure. Would you want *them* gossiping about
*your* private life?
55.Does Daphne have a CD out?
No, when Mercury had to cut artists, she was one of the artists cut and the CD was never released.
56.Where can I obtain it?
Her songs can be found on Napster-like programs online. And if you write her a really nice fan letter sometimes she’ll send you one, or you can purchase it at www.bc-efa.org.
57.What other cast members have CD’s out?
Chad Richardson, Manley Pope, Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp, Karmine Alers, Cary Shields, Matt Caplan, Joshua Kobak, and many others.
58.If I yell and scream Manley’s name in the street will a herd of girls trample me?
Most likely, yes. Especially outside the Nederlander theatre. Well sometimes they might not trample you, but look your way and start screaming, and then when they realize you’re joking, they’ll stop.
59.Will bitching about Joey Fatone being in RENT help the situation at all?
No, definitely not. Please refrain from doing so.
60. What is the OBC up to these days?
Adam Pascal: Currently ‘Radames’ in AIDA on Broadway.
Anthony Rapp: Performing in ‘Henry IV’ in Boston for the summer.
Daphne Rubin Vega: Just finished a run of ‘Free to Be…’ and has gigs around the city often.
Jesse: Movies and Television.
Idina & Taye: Currently Engaged! Yay!
Gilles Chaisson: Not a clue.
Yassmin Alers: Recently finished a run of the new musical ‘MISTER’ with Justin Johnston and Anthony Rapp.
Byron Utley: ??
Darius DeHaas: ??
Fredi Walker: I think she directs now in a theatre in NY somewhere.
Wilson Jermaine Heredia: He’s done a few movies here and there.
Rodney Hicks: Doing a show in NJ this summer.
Kristen Lee Kelly: ??
61. Have cast members ever scream ‘MANLEY!’ just for fun?
Yes, in this case we’d be talking about Ms. Yassmin Alers. (8-18-01 forever)
62. Who was the first OBC cast member to leave?
Daphne Rubin Vega. April 5th ’97. (I think)
63. Is there a soundtrack of rent?
No, There’s an “original cast recording”. Soundtracks are for movies only.
64. What are some of the song abriviations?
OT: Out Tonight, TM: Tango Maureen, LVB: La Vie Boheme, HNY: Happy New Year, SOL: Seasons of Love, LS: Life Support, OTM: Over The Moon, CB: Christmas Bells, WY: Without You, WYO: What You Own.
65. On the CD, why does the last track on CD 1 have a ‘sss’ sound in the beginning?
This is the ‘here goesss.’ Leaking from track 24 (I Should Tell You) to track 25 (La Vie Boheme B.)
66. Is [celebrity] really going to act in (direct, produce, etc.) a Rent movie?
Ever since Rent opened on Broadway, there were plans for a possible film version. For a while, Spike Lee was expected to direct, while a number of
people, including Justin Timberlake, had supposedly been signed to act in the film. In August of 2001, it was announced that Miramax had halted
development on the project, possibly because of budgetary concerns.
More recently, Baz Luhrmann has been mentioned as a potential director, but this has not been confirmed by any reliable source. Hollywood movie deals have always been fluid and subject to change, and until a movie of Rent is actually playing at your local theater, you should treat rumors of its existence as just that, rumors.
There is an early draft of a Rent film script floating around the
Internet, but since the Spike Lee/Miramax deal fell through, it's
unknown whether a Rent movie, if it's ever made, will actually use the
script.

Members of the RENTheads list, having heard many of these rumors over the
years, tend not to believe any new stories unless they come from a reliable
source. And no, "my friend read it on the Internet" is not a reliable source.
It's a big black and gray book available for sale. It contains the libretto,
various pictures, and stories from the creative team about the making of Rent.
It's currently in print, and so can be found, both new and used, in many
bookstores and online.
The wall is in the Nederlander. It's an alley that goes from behind grey doors in the lobby to the real 'stage door' that leads you to the backstage area. It's been signed by 1,000 of people and it's fun to look for actors signatures and their families signatures. (I've found Marcy's dad's and husband's before :)
On the line ‘throw down the key’ Mark drops the key into the audience to the person in that seat. Joel used to like to sit there.
Chartreuse.
The line WAS a line for $20 first and second row tickets. 34 tickets were available at each show. They were on sale 2 hours before show time. The line would start hours and hours before tickets were actually sold. On Saturday nights, the line would fill up before the Friday night show was over. There were ‘NY Line Queens’, who towards the end of the ‘lines’ run got very snotty and mean, I heard. The line was ended in early-mid ’97. So there now is a lottery, read above for information on it.
In John and Krystal’s opinion: YES. In the casts’ opinion: NO. As Byron once said, “You paid for your seat in the theatre, you can do whatever the f*ck you want. We love the screaming!” (1.28.01) I have never heard of someone getting kicked out for screaming too much. Scream all you want, it’s good motivation for the cast.
No, it’s definitely not just you.
August 3rd is the day when the OBC’s contracts expired. Many RENTheads brought tix for the day very far in advance. But it turned out that none of the cast members ended up leaving. I heard it was a cool day though, because there were many hardcore RENTheads there. And some cool stuff happened like Yassmin went on for the SOL 2 in the second act because Byron was out and Calvin Grant who had played the part in Act 1, had to play Collins for Act 2 because Michael was too ill to complete the show.
Yes there is. It is a restaurant and a bar on the corner of Ave. B and 10th Street on Tompkin’s Square Park. Many RENTheads have lunch there before the show and enjoy it.
They are all towns. Hicksville is on Long Island, Scarsdale is in Westchester or Whiteplains (I believe..) and West Port is in Connecticut, not far out of the city.
The Circle Line is a boat line that gives cruises around Manhattan Island. (I’ve heard that it’s quite ghetto.)
Take a subway to around near W. 8th Street, and walk East, soon it will turn into ‘E. 8th Street.’ And then it will turn to ‘St. Mark’s Place’.
Walk down St. Mark’s Place 5 or so blocks.
‘The Bohemian Life.’
“Long Live The Bohemian Life”
Act One: Will I? Act Two: Right after Mimi runs off in ‘Good-Bye Love’.
Bootlegs. Illegal recordings of shows.
Rolling on the floor laughing my ass off. This term has since then been shortened to ‘LMAO’ (aka Laughing my ass off.)
Very good. At RENT you’ll usually see AT LEAST one u/s’, very rarely is there a full cast on.
Yes. Very good. Some are better than the leads. Some are just as good, and some people say suck. Yassmin was the super-swing. Covered every female role almost and some male ones as well.
Second Acting is when you go into the theatre at intermission and stand in SRO or find an empty seat, hence the name ‘second acting’. People commonly do this if they can’t obtain lotto or SRO.
Yes. If you press your ear against the door. Especially at the loud parts. Usually people who do this are moved away because it is a fire hazard to be blocking the door.
RENTfreak? Usually, this is referred to a person who is a bit too much into RENT.
RENTrat? A person who sleeps on the street in front of the theatre for tickets.
RENTaholic? This is a fan who’s seen the show a lot. Better question: what is a lot? Joel’s seen it a lot, but other’s have seen it a lot too. I think that 15 gets to be a lot. It’s subjective though.
Original Broadway Cast
You’re referring to ‘Hicksville’ line that they change to Jersey on the tour, this is so that people that aren’t from NY or around it, will still get the joke. They also changed the LVB line from ‘the enemy of ave. a, we’ll stay’ to ‘the enemy…and mr. Grey.’ This was because apparently no one knew who the mysterious man in the suit was sitting next to benny.
Be very, very lucky. Get to know a cast member, or band member, or just find some loop hole that will get you there. You CAN’T just walk back there.
Nope, I’ve tried it. They take the pizza at the door.
