Nora's Story
My name is Nora, and I was diagnosed in Sept '96 with Lyme Disease. I was fortunate to have a physician who knew about Lyme Disease and who was treating it aggressively. I was hospitalized and given IV antibiotics for a week, and sent home on IM antibiotic therapy, to help my optic neuritis. I did well and was even able to go back to work. I went on and off PO antibiotic therapy for about the next year. In October of '97 I again lost my vision due to Lyme Disease.
I did not have trouble with my physician's plan of care but my insurance company denied me IV antibiotic therapy. By November 14, 1997, I was blind and suffering from full blown Lyme. I was hospitalized again for two weeks and again tested for everything under the sun, only for the tests to all come back negative. Finally, my insurance company allowed be 4 weeks of home IV therapy. My eyesight was improving when the insurance company decided that I needed more consultations.
The long and the short of the story is that I have been fighting with the insurance company on and off for over a year and a half. I am now legally blind and have been let go from my job of 10 years. My saving grace has been a roommate who cares and understands, and a physician who has stayed on top of the cutting edge of Lyme treatment. I would not wish this disease on my worst enemy.
