While many people remember the line spoken by actor Robert Duvall in the movie "Apocolypse Now" which was " I LOVE the smell of Napalm in the Morning, it smells like VICTORY" it was NOT burning napalm that most of us in Nam smelled. Here we see the source of what we smelled. This is Ken "Shack" Shackleton, of Alpha 2/47 (1967) stirring the pot of burning waste from a latrine, a scene repeated all over Nam every morning. Trust me, it didn't smell like "victory". Shack tells me this photo was taken in Dec. 1967. |
