Disgraced ex-NYPD Detective Julio Vasquez admitted yesterday in federal court that he ripped off drug dealers and shared the dope and cash with other cops. The feds sneaked Vasquez into Brooklyn Federal Court for an early morning appearance before Judge Carol Amon for his guilty plea to a single count of conspiring to distribute narcotics.
"I, along with other New York Police Department officers, stole narcotics, narcotics proceeds from drug dealers," he said, according to a transcript. "I and the other officers shared the drug money that we stole. I sold the drugs that we stole and shared in the proceeds of those sales with other officers."
Vasquez, 43, who is formally cooperating with the feds in the widening probe, faces up to 27 years in prison, but is hoping that prosecutors will urge the judge to show leniency when he is sentenced based on his help nailing additional dirty cops.
Sources said the 10 cops, including Vasquez's former partner, retired Detective Thomas Rachko, are implicated in the scandal.
Vasquez retired from the force last November after he and Rachko were caught ripping off $169,000 from a drug courier under surveillance by a task force of federal agents and detectives, according to prosecutors.
Court papers show that Vasquez led investigators to $744,370 stashed in a rented locker, which applies to the $800,000 in restitution he must pay as part of the deal.
Rachko said he gambled away his share. But prosecutors don't believe him and haven't offered Rachko a cooperation agreement. He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. "Vasquez would not be the first cooperating witness I've had to deal with," said Rachko's lawyer Jeffrey Lichtman. "It makes no difference to me. Our plan is to resolve this case if we can."
