Aim: Why is Solness unwilling to let go of  Kaia?

Do Now: Read the 2nd half of page 100 (from Kaia: ...I'm willing to break up.. to Solness: Good Night.) Respond to their conversation. You may interpret the text or more importantly express your opinions and feelings evoked by their dialogue.

Procedures:

• Does Kaia truly love Solness? Support your opinion.
• What lines of Solness give away his true reasons to keep Kaia in his firm?
• Why does Mrs. Solness arrange the appointment for Mr. Solness to see Doctor Herdal?
• How would you describe the relationship between Mr. Solness and Mrs. Solness?
• How did Solness get acquainted initially with Kaia?
• How did he describe Kaia's feelings for him? Comment on his story.
• Why wouldn't Mr. Solness share the story he told the doctor with his wife ?
• Solness's wife thinks her husband is mad or ill. How does Solness respond to this? How does he

defend himself?

Homework Assignment:

1.Describe your understanding of the main characters, their relationships and the conflicts that have emerged in the first part of the play.
2. It seems characters in the play deceive one another. Choose a character and let the character write a letter to another one telling him/her true feelings (i.e. Kaia to Ragnar, Mrs. Solness to Mr. Solness, etc.)
