Machida: This demon (mostly reptilian) is providing wealth and financial success to its followers, in exchange of a regular (yearly) sacrifice of young girls. Callie, Cordy and Buffy were supposed to become his annual dinner as Brittany Oswald and Kelly Percell did the year before. The fraternity house of the Delta Zeta Kappas had an altar in its basement to make sacrifices to Machida (thus assuring the fortune of their families). This ritual have been going on for about 50 years (according to the bones police found buried in a cavern below the frat-house basement). Tom also called him "Dark Lord", Buffy called him "Reptile Boy" or "Wormy" ...respect aint what it used to be. She later killed him with the ritual sword, causing not only his death but also the ruin of all former Delta Zeta Kappa members.
Richard takes a sword and walks behind a kneeling Tom. Tom has a series of symbols carved onto his chest. Richard begins to carve another one on Tom's back. Richard is finished carving Tom's new symbol. Two brothers help him on with his robe. Tom walks over to the well and picks up a bag. Tom lets three stones drop out of the bag and into his hand. Tom pours water over the stones. Tom is done with his stone-cleansing ritual and faces the girls.
Tom: "Machida." (starts down)
Brothers: "In his name."
Tom: "We who serve you, we who receive all that you bestow, call upon you in this holy hour."
Brothers: "In this holy hour."
He turns to walk toward Richard, holding the sword horizontally in both hands.
Tom: "We have no wealth, no possession... except that which you give us."
Brothers: "Except that which you give us."
He places the sword on Richard's arms.
Tom: "We have no power, no place in the world... except that which you give us."
Brothers: "Except that which you give us."
Richard hugs the sword to his chest, crossing his hands over his heart.
Tom: "It's been a year since our last offering."
Richard lowers the sword and rests the tip on the floor.
Tom: "A year in which our bounty overflowed. We come before you with fresh offerings. Accept our offering, Dark Lord, and bless us with your power. Machida!"
Brothers: "Machida!"
Tom tosses the stones into the well at the center of the basement one at a time.
Tom: "Come forth, and let your terrible countenance look upon your servants, and their humble offering. We call you, Machida."
Brothers: "In his name. Machida."
Suddenly Machida rises out of the well. It's a half-man, half-snake, green and scaly. He growls as he looks at the girls. Machida remains stationary and spreads his arms.
Tom: "For he shall rise from the depths, and we shall tremble before him. He who is the source of all we inherit and all we possess. Machida."
Brothers: "Machida."
Tom: "And if he is pleased with our offerings, then our fortune shall increase."
Brothers: "Machida. Let our fortunes increase."
Tom: "And on the tenth day of the tenth month he shall be enhungered. And we shall feed him."
The text of this ritual comes from AleXanders transcripts (although it has been edited in order to focus on the ritual, not the action as seen in "Reptile Boy").
Malcom Black: Name of a boy Willow met on the web. She found him "smart" and "very nice". They chatted several times. She falled in love with him. He said to be 18 years old and to live in Elmood (about 80 miles from Sunnydale). But she didn't knew that Malcom happened to be a nickname taken by Moloch, who wanted to reward him for freeing him. (also see Moloch).
Malleus Maleficarum: One of the numerous old books Giles possess. This one deals in particular with the demonic possessions and the appropriate counter-spells.
Manetti (Agent): F.B.I. agent who watched Marcie Ross, with the agent Doyle. He also took her to the "rehabilitation center" before Buffy totally knocked her off.
Mangus-Tripod: An exorcism ritual. It requires the presence of 4 people (each with a lit candle). 1 is standing on the 'hot-spot' (the place where the spirit is strongly linked) and the 3 others stand at different points, forming a triangle around that spot. Everybody is chanting a ritual at the same time. That's the ritual Willow suggested to exorcise the ghost of Jim Stanley. The chant being:
"I shall confront and expel all evil.
Out of marrow and bone,
Out of house and home,
Never to come here again." ("I Only Have Eyes For You")
Mansion: This the headquater that Angelus chose after the warehouse got destroyed by fire at the end of "Passion". It's located a bit outside of town on Crawford Street. This is where Buffy sent Angel to Hell and where he came back. Angel continue to inhabit there until he left Sunnydale.
Angelus: "And this... this is the garden.
Drusilla: Wow! Look: Jasmine!
Angelus: Night blooming.
Drusilla: Like us. Oh, Angel, it's fairyland. Ooh!
Spike: It's paradise. Big windows, lovely gardens. It'll be perfect when we want the sunlight to kill us."
("I Only Have Eyes For You")
Manual of the Slayer: Book supposed to guide the Slayer, to indicate what behavior to adopt. It also describes the rules to be followed. Buffy didn't even knew this manual existed (Giles thought that Buffy would need to read it when he first meet her...). Kendra saw it as THE book. Faith doesn't seems to be aware of it either... what a waste of paper ! Giles already pointed out that there was no Watcher manual or guide.
Marc: High School student at Sunnydale. He seemed to be pretty normal, he had a magic tricks act in the 'talent show'. But this was a cover. He really was a demon (see "Brotherhood of the seven"). Sid, with the help of the gang, killed him. He is the murderer of Emily and Morgan Shay. He also attempted to remove Giles' brain from his English skull...what a shame!
Marcie Ross: Marcie was a student a Sunnydale high, she played the flute in the band. Shy and without any friends she was gradually forgot, nobody remarking her, and became invisible. She had 4 common class with Xande & Willow, and non of them remembered her. So she was declared missing, sometimes in December 1996. Jealous, she thought Cordelia was responsible for it so she seek revenge. She attacked Mitch, Harmony and Miss Miller. At last she tried to "remodel" her face. She was stopped and the F.B.I. took her away to be "reinserted" (understand used as a spy/killer).
Margaret: A maid that Angelus fed on in Dublin (probably in 1838 or so). He also probably killed her son.
Marie Antoinette: Apparently a sort of role model to Cordelia. Watch out Cordy, she ended up beheaded during the French Revolution of 1789 (or actually the Revoltuion begain in 1789 but she and her husband, king Louis XVI, were only executed in 1792 if my memory doesn't betray me....). The "cake" allusion made by Cordy concern a famous citation from Marie Antoinette. As she saw a big manifestation of Parisians in front of the royal palace, she asked what was going on and was told they wanted some bread. She was astonished when she heard that there was no more bread in Paris, and that's when she said "So let's them have some cake". Yes Cordy, that wasn't a bad idea, but how disconnected from reality was she, huh???!
Cordelia (in the History class): I just don't see why everyone's always picking on Marie Antoinette. I can so relate to her. She worked really hard to look that good, and people just don't appreciate that kind of effort. And I know the peasants were all depressed...
Xander: I think you mean 'oppressed'.
Cordelia: Whatever. They were cranky. So they're, like, 'Let's lose some heads'. Uhhh! That's fair. And, and Marie Antoinette cared about them. She was gonna let them have cake!
Teacher: Yes, well, that's a very interesting perspective. ("Lie To Me")
Marin (Coach): See Carl Marin.
Mark of Eyghon: This is the mark of the demon Eyghon (see the def.). His initiates have it tattooed on their body (on an arm near the inside elbow or on the neck). According to Willow it has an Etruscan origin, and not Egyptian (as it might seems at first). Rupert Giles, Ethan Rayne, Philip Henry, Thomas Sutcliff, Deidre Page and Randall, all have tattooed this mark (well, only Giles and Ethan are still alive now...). The mark does not only have a decorative purpose, it is needed to summon the demon for a trans-possession. Eyghon can feel this mark and that's how he found his former initiates. Note that the destruction of the tattoo will also destroy the link between the initiate and Eyghon.
Willow: "Ah! Aha! It's not Egyptian, it's Etruscan mistaken for Egyptian by the design pattern, but any fool can see it predates their iconology." ("Dark Past")
Martin: See "Hogan Martin".
Marvin: See "Diego".
Master: He was the supreme vampire, the first one. An Old One fed on him and he drank some of his blood, becoming the first vampire. They are all his descendants. Note that the age of a vampire as a lot to do with his powers. Partly because he/she gained knowledge and experience with time, but mainly for a question of generation. The older a vampire is, the older was his/her Sire, thus the purest the demonic blood that flush in him/her. The Master as the first generation was the most powerful of all. He tried to open the Hellmouth, but an earthquake (Calfornia, 1937) swallowed half the town and he got stuck in between the two dimensions. Once freed by Luke, he ruled his minions from his underground jail, spreading terror in Sunnydale. His attempts to gain freedom always failed thanks to the gang. Finally he was free to walk in Sunnydale, after drinking Buffy's blood (actually, he walked once in the cemetery in "Nightmares"). A second fight occurred on campus, where this time he was killed. During that Summer (1997), while Buffy was in L.A. his bones where buried under a tree in a cemetary. The Anointed one and his followers made an attempt to resurrect him, but Buffy interfered and destroyed the skeleton. When still alive, the Master was very powerful (astoundingly quick, hypnosis powers,...) and a great knowledge of writtings and prophecies.
McAlvy: "See Dodd McAlvy".
McCarthy: Head recruiter for a very large software company. He came to Sunnydale to meet Oz and Willow for a job interview, or should I say job proposition. The meeting took place during the Career Fair (1998).
Mehrenstadt Text: A book that (thanks to Willow) led the gang on the track of the Ascension. She recall that Ascension was mention in the Genocide section of that volume (hidden by Giles in the top of his book cabinet). It seems to be some kind of dark magic encyclopedia.
Giles: (...) "There's a reference here to the journal of... Desmond Kane, pastor of a town called Sharpsville. 'May 26, 1723. Tomorrow is the Ascension. God help us all.' It was the last anyone heard.
Wesley: Of Kane?
Giles: Of Sharpsville. The town more or less disappeared." ("Ennemies")
Mein Furrier: Little word-game by Buffy in "Phases". She mixed "mein Führer" (German for 'guide', 'leader' term later used for Hitler. Thus by extension means also dictator) and "furrier" (someone who works on annimal skins). So technically a fur-trader with very little human feelings. Now it should seems clearer why it refers to Cain, don't you think?
Buffy: "I think I know where to look. We just have to make it there before mein furrier."
Mercy Hospital: This placed was evocated by Jenny, because a child was born there with his eyes facing inward (before the Master's liberation, Spring 1997). I've no clue indicating it's in Sunnydale, or anywhere near by (but it could be assumed, since it's a foresign of the liberation, it could be around the master's lair). The closest in the area would be Mercy Healthcare Sacremento (but Mercy hospitals can be found all over the US).
Meredith Todd: She was a Fondren high student and a member of the Pep band. She broke her neck along with 2 friends from the squad in a car accident in fall 1997. Buffy felt in her empty grave in the cemetery and it led the Gang on the track of Chris Epps.
Michael: A sunnydale student. He has a pretty gothic style (dark clothes, make-up,...) but it is because he likes witchcraft not this music (but I guess he could like both...). He was among the people persecuted by the M.O.O., and before that would have been beat up by Roy and some other kids without Buffy. But they didn't catched him (he was beat up thought), so he was able to tell Buffy and Giles that the crowd had turned nuts.
Michelle Blake: One of the senior girls of Sunnydale high involved in the Homecoming Queen competition of 1998 (the thoughest from any other years I'd say). Her competitors were Holly Charleston, Cordelia Chase and Buffy Summers. She won (tie with Holly Charleston) the title. That was the first time for Sunnydale high that there was a tie...
Cordelia: "Michelle Blake. Open to all mankind, especially those with a letterman's jacket and a car. She could give me a run." ("Homecoming")
Milkbar: It's a chocolate bar that the students were supposed to sell for the march band (and were forced to by Snyder). But actually, the order came from the mayor. The candies were cursed (a trick from Ethan Rayne) and turned all adults into the teens they used to be (mentally, not physically).
Xander: "I don't get this. The candy's supposed to make you feel all immature and stuff, but I've had a ton, and I don't feel any dif... Never mind." ("Band Candy")
Miller (Miss): English teacher at Sunnydale hign school. She was attacked, but not killed, by Marcie Ross, who put a bag over her head. She was a target because she likes Cordy and she didn't paid Marcie attention in her class.
Miller's Woods: Some woods outside of Sunnydale. That's where Buffy and Cordelia were dropped by for the SlayerFest '98. They called Giles for help from a caban in there but he didn't had the time to come there. That's where Kulak died, and where Jungle Bob injuried himself with his bear trap.
Mini-Pizza: Here is the recipe of Ted's mini-pizzas (whick Xander would be ready to pay two or three hundred bucks a piece).
Xander: "Can I just say, this is the finest pizza *ever* on God's green Earth. What is your secret?
Ted: Well, after you bake it, you fry it in herbs and olive oil, but you gotta use a cast-iron skillet. No room for compromise there." ("Ted")
Miquot Clan: See "Kulak".
Miss Attention Span: Faith according to Buffy. Used in "Bad Girls", just after Faith thrown herself into the fight while Buffy was counting to 3. Since the Eliminatus they were fighting was kinda strong he took them one after another (and Buffy had a hard close-combat session at the end).
Faith: "Nicely diverted, B!
Buffy: Diverted? That was me fighting for my life, Miss Attention Span."
Miss Edith: See "Edith, (Miss)".
Miss Goody-Two-Shoes: Buffy according to Faith in "Consequences". The 2 were once again arguing over Allan's death.
Note to my visitors: Could someone fill me in, and tell me what cultural background I'm lacking here???
Faith: "For me to change and be more like you, you mean? Little Miss Goody-Two-Shoes? It ain't gonna happen, B."
Miss Invisible: Buffy's expression for Marcie Ross (she was the #1 suspect, but not identified yet).
Miss Motormouth: Kind expression from Cordy to one of her groupie (how nice she is). She wasn't refering to a foul ordor coming out of this girl's mouth, but to her noisy mouth. She interrupted Cordy! Can you imagine that...
Cordelia: "Hello, Miss Motormouth, can I get a sentence finished? (...)". ("The Harvest")
Miss Not-Over-Yourself-Yet: Used by Cordy after Buffy told Xander that he was being such a jerk not because he cared about Miss Calendar's death but because he was being jealous of Angel. Cordy who was here couldn't let that being said (even if Buffy was right).
Buffy: "Right. This is all nobility. This has nothing to do with jealousy.
Cordelia: Hello? Miss Not-Over-Yourself-Yet?" ("Revelations")
Miss Save-The-World: Pretty obvious who is concerned, isn't it? This expression was used by Cordy in "Surprise".
Cordelia: "Well, just because she's Miss Save-The-World and everything, you have to make a big deal? I have to cook! And everything.
Xander: You're cooking?
Cordelia: Well, I'm chips and dips girl."
Miss Sunnydale in the Slayer Pageant: Expression used by Buffy in "Lovers' Walk", when her mother talked about Buffy going to study in college while Faith could take over the Slayer functions.
Miss Well Proportioned: Expression used by Buffy for Natalie French, after a comment from Giles.
Buffy: "Do you know Miss French, the teacher that's subbing for Dr. Gregory?
Giles: Yes. Yes, she's lovely. In a, a common, extremely well proportioned way.
Buffy: Well, I'm chasing Claw Guy last night, and Miss Well Proportioned is heading home. The Claw Guy takes one look at her and runs screaming for cover. " ("Teacher's Pet")
Mr. Caution Man: Is it really useful that I precise that we are talking about Giles here? But what might be more interesting is that it came from Xander and that it was used in "Surprise".
Giles: "No, you won't. We're having a party tonight.
Xander: Looks like Mr. Caution Man, but the sound he makes is funny.
Giles: Buffy's surprise party will go ahead as we planned. Except I won't be wearing the little hat."
Mr. Excitement: Becareful expression used twice! First it was a nickname given to a solitaire young man called Owen Thurman (see def.) in "Never Kill A Boy On The First Date". Although Xander was the first to cite this nickname nothing indicates it is his own invention. It sounds like his style, but since he had no reason to be jealous at that time it might not be his work (but does Xander needs any reasons to be mocking???). But it was used much later at the end of "The Zeppo" by Cordelia when she was attacking Xander by telling him he was such a loser (it didn't worked at all this time).
Mr. Faithful: Expression used by Cordy in "Anne" during an argument with Xander, to tell him that she thought he cheated on her. That's an under-the-belt-blow... His adventure with Ampatta was before he went out with Cordy. But he had the same idea on her (see "Pedro the Cabana Boy").
Cordelia: "Oh, yeah! Mr. Faithful? You probably met up with some hot little Inca Mummy Girl. Yeah! I heard about her."
Mr. Flawless Plan: Nickname given to Ford by his friend Diego. For 2 reasons: first Diego whished he knew the detail of the paln. Second, he just annouced a bump in the plan, just 1 minute after Ford said everything was going on as planned...
Ford: "Oh, Christ! Why didn't you tell me about this?
Diego: I have to do everything around here. Sorry, Mr. Flawless Plan Guy, it slipped my mind." ("Lie To Me")
Mr. Gordo: This is Buffy's stuffed-pig.
Mr. I-Love-The-English-Patient: Expression used by Faith in "The Beauty and the Beasts". For those who never saw that movie (you should), it's a love film. Faith uses a metaphor to speak about very romantic guys.
Faith: "All men are beasts, Buffy.
Buffy: Okay, I was hoping to not get that cynical till I was at least forty.
Faith: It's not cynical. I mean, it's realistic. Every guy from... Manimal down to Mr. I-Love-The-English-Patient has beast in him. And I don't care how sensitive they act. They're all still just in it for the chase."
Mr. I'm-the-lead-singer-I'm-so-great-I-don't-have-to-show-up-for-my-date-or-even-call: Expression used by a visibly pissed-off Cordy. She was talking to Oz about Devon.
Cordelia: "Is Mr. I'm-the-lead-singer-I'm-so-great-I-don't-have-to-show-up-for-my-date-or-even-call gonna be there?
Oz: Yeah, y'know, he's just going by 'Devon' now."
Mr. Killing Spree: Expression used in "Dead Man's Party" by Cordy to qualify the change that Angel went through when becoming Angelus. Used to support (in Cordy's mind) Buffy...
Cordelia: "Time out, Xander. Put yourself in Buffy's shoes for just a minute. Okay? I'm Buffy, freak of nature, right? Naturally I pick a freak for a boyfriend, and then he turns into Mr. Killing Spree, which is pretty much my fault...
Buffy: Cordy! Get outta my shoes!"
Mr. Mutant: Expression used by a really pissed Xander, as he was stuck in the basement with Cordelia. By Mr. Mutant he was refering to Norman Pfister ("What's My Line, Part 2").
Mr. Pointy: Kendra's lucky stake. I did not add it only to complete my collection of "Mr. ###"... well, actually I did. But another main reason is these are the last words of Kendra:
Kendra: "In case de curse does not succeed, dis is my lucky stake. I have killed many vampires wit it. I call it Mr. Pointy.
Buffy: You named your stake?
Kendra: (a bit embarrassed) Yes.
Buffy: (smiles) Remind me to get you a stuffed animal. She accepts the stake from Kendra and looks it over.
Buffy: Thanks. Kendra: (exhales) Watch your back." ("Becoming, Part 1", AleXander's Transcripts)
Mr. Protective Guy: Giles, as seen by Buff in "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered".
Buffy: "He said it with flowers. Look, this isn't the time to start becoming Mr. Protective Guy. I can't just hang around, and I can't prepare when I don't know what's coming."
Mr. Science: See "Pete".
Mr. Technical: An expression used by Xander for Giles. Well, it could have been right in a lot of cases, but here it was more to try to get off the responsibility of sleeping instead of watching Oz (as a werewolf).
Giles: "How long... exactly did you... rest your eyes for?
Xander: A little now... uh... a little then... But I never heard Oz leave, and he was here in the morning when I... um... when I...
Giles: WOKE UP!
Xander: You could put it that way if you want to, Mr. Technical." ("The Beauty and the Beasts")
Mr. Test Scores: Willow here refers to Oz ability to pass any tests he wants (when he doesn't wants, he doesn't show up). That's how she met him the first time: he had pass (like her) a test an had an interview with an important recruiter for a big software company.
Willow: "Well, traditionally, you know, repeating a grade isn't exactly a turn-on. A-and you're practically a genius. You're Mr. Test Scores. I-it's all a little weird." ("Anne")
Mitch (1): Cordy's boyfriend in "Out of Mind, Out of Sight", (because) he made the varsity baseball. (Which basically means Spring time 1997). He was the first victim of Marcie Ross. She attacked him with a baseball bat. He ended up at the hospital. By the way his father is a lawyer.
Mitch (2): See "Helen's Kitchen".
Mob: See "Angry Mob".
Moloch (the Corrupter): Moloch the corrupter seduces weak people by offering them what they miss (love, power, knowledge,...). This demon was captured in a book in 1418 by monks, lead by Thelonius, in Cortona (Italy). In order for him to be released one must read the book. Accidentally Willow scanned this book and the demon was roaming free on the internet. Seeing Willow as his saver, he seduced her as "Malcom" on an internet chatroom. Meanwhile he got a robot built so that he can have a material body (to hold his now electronic consciousness). He seduced Dave and Fritz, 2 computer freaks, and made them work for him, with others (among which a technician and a guard) in the former CRD building. Jenny Calendar helped the gang to kick him out of the web, but Buffy, Xander and Willow had to destroy the robot, were he had transfered his cyber-soul), by electrocution.
Monkeys: This one is kind of a special one... It comes from a delirium Oz had with a box of crackers.... I might have kept it out (and probably would have), if a later episode didn't referred to it. So to bring more light on Buffy's weird dream I added this entry, with the 2 scenes of the 2 different episodes. The first scene that follows is from "What's My Line, Part 2" and the second one from "Surprise". Both have been transcribed by AleXander Thomson (but here only the relevant parts were kept (sorry Joss... --well actually I'm not sorry. Joss do you have a problem with French people?).
The school lounge. Oz is getting a box of animal crackers from a vending machine. His arm is in a sling. He straightens up and sees Willow there.
Oz: "Oh, hey! (offers the box) Animal cracker?
Willow: (smiles) No, thank you. How's your arm?
Oz: (pulls out a cookie) Oh, look! Monkey! And he has a little hat. And little pants.
Willow: (smiles) Yeah, I-I see!
Oz: The monkey's the only cookie animal that gets to wear clothes, you know that?
Willow smiles brightly.
Oz: You have the sweetest smile I've ever seen.
Willow is surprised by the compliment.
Oz: (continues down the hall) So, I'm wondering, do the other cookie animals feel sorta ripped? Like, is the hippo going, 'Hey, man, where are *my* pants? I have my hippo dignity!'
Willow laughs.
Oz: And you know the monkey's just, (with a French accent) 'I mock you with my monkey pants!'
Willow laughs more.
Oz: And there's a big coup in the zoo.
Willow: The monkey is French?
Oz: All monkeys are French. You didn't know that? [Hopefully the reverse isn't true...]
Willow: No." (giggles)
[Here Buffy is dreaming]
Buffy comes out of her room holding a glass and walks down the hall. Behind her Drusilla stalks her. Buffy opens the door to the bathroom and suddenly finds herself at the Bronze. She finds Willow sitting at a table with a large cup of cappuccino and an organ grinder's monkey.
Willow: (to the monkey) "L'hippo a piqué' ses pantalons."
Translation: The hippo stole his pants.
Monster: I just put this definition to remind that not all monsters have a demoniac origin. The monster is closer from the animal or the conscienceless human. And precisely, it does not come from hell. A genetical mutation, a curse, an unatural evolution or a magic ritual/object can result in the creation of a monster.
Monster Island: Sunnydale according to Xander. He was astounished that there is some many kind of dark things crawling in this town...
Giles: (...) "There was an incident two nights ago. Uh..., involving a homeless person in Weatherly Park. He was practically shredded, but, uh, nothing like Dr. Gregory.
Buffy: Fork Guy doesn't do heads.
Giles: Not historically.
Buffy: And Dr. Gregory's blood wasn't drained.
Xander: So there's something else out there? Besides Silverwareman? Oh, this is fun, we're on Monster Island." ("Teacher's Pet")
Monster Trucks: Show during which their are car-crashes, automobile-stunts, exhibitions of overpowered trucks and 4x4 and car destruction. Relatively large crowds are interested by these events. But the more interesting in all that is that Jenny successfully convinced Giles to go with her to one of these shows...
Jenny: "Look, we could've just left.
Giles: Wh-what, and miss the nitro-burning funny cars? No, couldn't have that." ("Lie To Me")
MOO: See "Mothers Opposed to the Occult".
Morgan Shay: This student was always with his dummy, Sid, when there was rehearsals for the school "talent show" where he had a ventriloquist act. He passes for a weirdo, among a lot of students, but he is an A student. He helped Sid in his demon hunt, but ended brainless. The brain did not suit the demon, because Morgan was treated by the Dr. Dale Legget for a brain cancer. That sickness explains numerous headaches and his general weakening, he also missed a lot of classes through the year.
Morgue: A place apparently more visited than it should be. The gang need from time to time to inspect dead bodies, either to identify them as vampire victims or for analyse. Also used (unwillingly) by Buffy for her first date with Owen. There is the city morgue and one within the 'Sunnydale Funeral Home'.
Mortician's Desk Reference: One of the 3 books Willow found in Chris Epps' locker.
Mothers Opposed to the Occult: Name given by Joyce to a movement she created after founding the bodies of 2 kids. The acronyme being M.O.O. This is inspired by the M.A.D.D (Mother Against Drunk Driving) a movement created in the US (after a drunk driver killed some kids, if I recall correctly). Here it was inspired after Joyce found the body of 2 kids (a boy and a girl about 7 years old). It kinda got overproportionned (well some demon was under that) and they ended up confiscating anything having to do with occulism to be burnt. By the way that looks more like the inquisition as seen in Europe during the Middle Age, in the US with the puritan settlers (Salem,...) & against the Black communities, and in Germany under the Third Reich. And believe me that none of these 4 book-burning events (or much worse, executions) makes me proud of human stupidity (unfortunaletly a lot of people still react in this direction as soon as they are scared/shocked). See also "Strauss, Hans and Greta".
Mouth of Hell (the): This other way of saying the "Hellmouth" is not common but it exists. Angel used it in the very first episode, when he met Buffy for the first time. Actually my guess is that here Angel just translated the name given to that place by the Spanish settlers: 'Boca del Infierno' ('Mouth of Hell'), rather than to used the rough translation commonly used ('Hellmouth'). If you don't know anything about the "Hellmouth" look-up at the definition...
Angel: (...) "You're standing at the Mouth of Hell. And it's about to open." ("Welcome to the Hellmouth")
Multi-media Room: A room in the Delta Zeta Kappa fraternity house it has cherry walnut paneling and two forty-eight-inch televisions on satellite feed. Not bad for a college kid house
Mummy: A mummy is a corpse preserved with potions and rituals (usually to put away the organs that get rotten). Diverse civilizations used this method, among which, Egyptians and Incas. The most famous mummy in Buffy is Inca and named: "Ampatta" (see def.). The one who came to Sunnydale's museum was more alive than the last one you saw...
Murray (Miss): She is an English litterature teacher at Sunnydale high. She is the first teacher on which Buffy used her telepathic abilities to give good answers in class (on the reading of 'Othello' reading)...
Munson: See "Rodney Munson".
Museum: Sunnydale does not only have a high school, churchesand cemeteries.... actually there is also a museum, with its rose garden, its temporary expositions, its rooms full of valuable objects. And I was gonna forget its non-dead-life-sucking-mummy..... Honnestly, what did you expected in a town with trans-possessive zoo annimals???
Myhnegon: See "Glove of Myhnegon".
Mystery of Alcathla: One of the books that Buffy studied aftershe found Angel in the woods (back from Hell).
N
Nancy Doyle: A Sunnydale high student. She was killed in the Bizarro Land, while watching that no vampires could come in the library. She was with Larry and Oz but these 2 survived. Note that she is still alive in the real world. We saw her too in "Earshot" when she was competing with Buffy in Ms Murray's class to give good answers to the teacher's questions about Othello.
Natalie (French): The Dr. Natalie French (Hey Joss... you have a problem with French people?) is the substitute of Dr. Gregory, a science teacher at Sunnydale high. She is very attractive and nicely dressed (by the way she wear shoulder pads). This name is the one of a retired biology teacher [born in 1907, retired in 1972]. The "young one" is a form of giant praying mantis (who killed Dr. Gregory). She attracts virgin male students to fertlize her eggs (and eat their head afterward). In addition to her appearance she uses pheromone [chemical molecule] to be even more irresistible. Xander and Blaynes almost became her next meal, but as ever Buffy kick (or more precisely hacked) her insect-butt. See also "Carlyle".
Neal: A guy working just next to Ted. He was also a salesman and thus didn't appreciate much his neighbor who was an 'overachiever' (as Buffy put it). He is the one who told to Belinda (in reality Buffy) that Ted was planning his wedding (with Joyce, who didn't know about it...).
Net Girl: Would you be surprised if I told you we are speaking of Willow here???
Willow (to Angel): "Oh! Great! I'm so the 'Net girl." ("Lie To Me")
Newman (Miss or Grace): See "Grace Newman".
Newsome (Colonel): The boss of the military base next to Sunnydale. His name was told by (Private?) Xander (to impress a soldier) in "Innocence".
Xander: "Well, if you do, I won't tell Colonel Newsome that your boots ain't regulation, your post wasn't covered, (grabs his M-16 and gives it back to him properly) and you hold your gun like a sissy girl."
Nickel: A band that played in the Bronze. (in "School Hard").
Nigerian Mask: Joyce received at the gallery a shipment of (Western?) African artifacts. Among which a mask that she did not exposed but brough back home to decorate her bedroom. With its pointy teeth and it's red eyes it didn't seduced Buffy at all. Actually this mask is powerful magical artifact linked to the demon Ovu Mobani (see the definition).
Giles: "Unbelievable. (immitating Joyce) 'Do you like my mask? Isn't it pretty? It raises the dead!' Americans!..." (Dead Man's Party)
Nighthawk: The nickname that Xander used to communicate with the gang over the walkies-talkies, when he patrolled. That's during the summer 1998, while Buffy ran away. It was later used by Buffy as a joke (for this funny name) or as an insult (during a heated argument, to illustrate the concept of 'stupidity'.
Nightmares: Buffy is usually the one who has nightmares. Which is kinda normal due to her extra-curricular activities. Note that the episode "Nightmares" (a great one!) involved nightmares from everybody, which was a sort of break in the Buffy-nightmare relation set up from the beginning. Buffy's nightmares are not so much emphasized now in the show, compare to season 1. Nightmares often had a prophetic function, even if they can't always be understood at first. Also notice that I used the term nightmares and that the definition "dreams" only refers you here. There are very little dreams but nightmares in the show, the only things that could be close to dreams (in the happy sense of the term) are often illusions...and generally end up badly (e.g. Giles seing Jenny [in reality Dru] when Angelus tortured him).
Buffy: "Do you remember the demon that almost got out the night I died?"
Willow: "Every nightmare I have that doesn't revolve around academic failure or public nudity is about that thing. In fact, once I dreamt that it attacked me while I was late for a test and naked." (The Zeppo")
Nitro-burning Funny Cars: See "Monster Trucks".
Norman Pfister: The name under which one of the bounty hunter from the Order of Taraka presents himself. He shows up at the door when a woman is there and promise free samples from the company he represents (Blush Beautiful Skin Care and Cosmetics). Mr Kalish died falling for the trick, Cordy (and Xander with her) almost died too. He is a mutant (called "Mr. Mutant" and "Larvae Boy" by Xander"), or actually he is a mass of meal-worms that can take the appearance of a human being (Norman Pfister), they have a limited language though they are intelligent. He can only be killed if all the meal worms are killed. Xander and Cordy took revenge on him by gluing the worms and stomping him to death.
Cordelia: "Die! Die, die, die! Die!
Xander: I think he did, Cordy." ("What's My Line, Part 2")
O
Oh, je Stink!: Expression of despair used by Buffy in visible trouble with her French... "Je" simply meaning "I". ("School Hard").
Old Ones: This is the usual term to refer to the demons who once inhabited the Earth. They left for their Hell dimension. The last demon to leave the Earth fed on a human, and made him drink some of his blood. The Master was born, and with him the race of the vampires. Thus as you can see no vampire is among the old ones (not even the Master). Except vampires, the Old Ones left some remains from their years spent on Earth. Artifacts and graves can still be found from time to time.
Old Reliable: Expression that Buffy used to qualify Willow. Since Willow was in a bad mood, due to the fact that people have a tendency to always ask her to do their stuff she got wild and began to be pissed at the world... The full scene is a bit long so I will only put here an extract of it that will fully explain another expression used later by Willow: 'Reliable-Dog-Geyser Person'.
Willow: "No, it's fine. I'm 'Old Reliable'.
Xander: She just means, you know, the geyser. You're like a geyser of fun that goes off at regular intervals.
Willow: That's 'Old Faithful'.
Xander: Isn't that the dog that, that the guy had to shoot...
Willow: That's 'Old Yeller'." ("Dopplegängland")
Orb of Thesulah: The Thesulan Orbs are the main physical element for the rituals of the undead (and more precisely the Restoration Ritual). It is the element that captures the soul of a creature that departed into the ether. And if you want to give back his soul to vampire, you better have it at hand...
Shopkeeper: (...) Well, no, there you go. One Thesulan Orb. Spirit vault for the rituals of the undead. I don't get many calls for those lately. Sold a couple as new age paperweights last year. Yeah, I just love those new-agers, boy. They helped to send my youngest to college. By the way, you do know that the transliteration annals for the ritual of the undead were lost. Without the annals, the surviving text is gibberish.
Jenny: And without a translated text, the Orbs of Thesulah are pretty much useless. Yeah, I know.
Shopkeeper: Well, I only mention it because I have a strict policy of no refunds.
Jenny: It's okay. I'm working on a computer program to translate the Rumanian liturgy to English based on a random sampling of the text." ("Passion")
And here is a nice job from the scenarists (since Giles never heard of this scene) that happened 4 episodes later:
Willow: "I need about a day, and... an 'Orb of Thesulah'? Whatever that is.
Giles: Spirit vault for rituals of the undead. I've got one. I-I've been using it as a... paperweight."
("Becoming, Part 1")
Order of Aurelius: Founded by a vampire named Aurelius (see def.), the symbol of the order is 3 stars and a sun. First meet in "The Harvest", this symbol of the demoniac cult was also met in "Never Kill a Boy on the First Date" inside a ring of a ashed-vampire. The sect is old and venerated among vampires. Members are called "brethern" (see def.).
Order of Taraka: Bounty hunters or shoiuld I said highly dangerous bounty hunters. The Order of Taraka is a society of deadly (and not neccessarily human) assassins. The members of the order can wear a ring bearing the crest of the order. 3 bounty hunters were sent after Buffy: the Cyclops, Norman Pfister and Patrice.
Giles: "They're a breed apart, Buffy. Unlike vampires they have no earthly desires, but to collect their bounty. They find a target, and, uh... they eliminate it. You can kill as many of them as you like, it won't make any difference. Where there's one, there will be another, and another. They won't stop coming until the job is done. " ("What's My Line, Part 1")
Orgies: These according to Willow are supposed to happen during frat parties, an information that strangely Xander never heard about. This came during an argument the gang had, because Buffy lied to Giles in order to go to a frat party. Seriously if your parents went to college ask them about parties they ll tell you the truth: college kids play chess and drink coffee (or so they say, hahaha ). Anyway that information pulled out a cool expression from Xander:
Xander: "Whoa! Whoa-ho-ho, rewind. Since when do they have orgies, and why aren't I on the mailing list?"
And later on:
Xander: "I'm goin' to the party."
Willow: "What?"
Xander: "I gotta keep an eye on Buffy. Those frat guys creep me."
Willow: "You wanna protect her?"
Xander: "Mm-hm."
Willow: "And prove that you're just as good as those rich, snotty guys?"
Xander: "Mm-hm."
Willow: "Maybe catch an orgy?"
Xander: "If it's on early." ("Reptile Boy")
Orkins: See "Jeff Orkins".
Orthodontist: Except from being the curse from teens, they can be useful. That's because of his metal braces that Rodney's corpse was identified. Note that Incas did not have any orthodontists.
Willow: Giles, were the Incas very advanced?
Giles: Yes, yes, very.
Willow: Did they have orthodontists?
Cut to the mummy. There are metal braces on its teeth . ("Inca Mummy Girl", AleXander's Transcripts)
Oswald: See Brittany Oswald.
Outlaw Train: Xanders expression in "Reptile Boy" to tell Willow she was a "real" criminal.
Xander: "Hmm. And we thought just because we didn't have any money or anyplace to go this would be a lackluster evening."
Willow: "I know! We could go to the Bronze and sneak in our own tea bags and ask for hot water."
Xander: "Hop off the outlaw train, Will, before you land us all in jail."
Overlooked One (the): Expression of despair used by Buffy in "Inca Mummy Girl". She was having one of her traditional argument with Giles concerning her evenings (meaning patrols/training versus parties). Giles 0, Buffy 1. (see also "Plans").
Buffy: "So, can I go?
Giles: I think not.
Buffy: How come?
Giles: Because you are the Chosen One.
Buffy: Mm. Just this once I'd like to be the Overlooked One."
Ovu Mobani: A zombie demon. His (Nigerian) name means "Evil Eyes". He is strongly linked to Western African culture (the name, the mask), but it might have other name in other cultures (I presume). The Nigerian mask is the key to his freedom. At night it raises the (recently) dead people and attract them toward itself (you better not be in the way of the zombies then). The attraction has a simple origin: it needs one of the zombies to wear the mask to incarnate. Once it is done it become almost unvulnerable (how can you kill a corpse?), except for his eyes, the source of his power. When looking at someone he can create a red flash that will freeze the victim, as long as he keeps his stare on him/her. He incarned in Pat's corpse, but Buffy killed him with a shovel in the eyes. His destruction makes also disappear all the zombies he had under his control.
Owen Stadeel: Well a young man from Sunnydale high that might be in trouble if his girl friend learn that he cheated on her.... Buffy witnessed the scene while patrolling in the park to get the roaming werewolf..
Giles: "Anything yet?
Buffy: Yes. And you won't believe what I saw. Brittany Podell was making out with Owen Stadeel, but he goes with Barrett Williams. If she ever found... No, um, no, no sign of the werewolf. How about you?" ("Phases")
Owen Thurman: First love of Buffy in the show, and actually Buffy's first date -her "maidden voyage"- (no contradiction accepted, Angel wasn't merly a crush at that point). I agree it didn't last long (1 episode). Owen is an attractive (according to Sunnydale girls' standards, not me!) and reserved young man. He loves books, and is particularly fan of Emily Dickinson. He is intelligent, but only litterature is attractive to him (he sleeps in math). He was attracted to Buffy, especially for her morbid activities (that he never really understood -or not as a "Slayer" stuff). Buffy didn't pursue the relationship, he alsmost died in "Never Kill a Boy on the First Date" while the gang looked for the Anointed One. The solitaire boy was nicknamed "Mr. Excitement" (possibly by Xander).
Oz: Oz is the lead guitar player of the band "Dingoes Ate my Baby". He is quiet and reserved, but is at ease with his friends and has a lot of humor. He loved Willow at the first sight ("Inca Mummy Girl", the dance at the Bronze, he was on stage and saw her in her Eskimo costume) and spend a couple episodes saying: "who's that girl???". He had flunked couple classes (he didn't showed up), and missed the summer classes (by not going). So he was a senior in season 2 and 3, even if he is a really smart guy. Oz became a werewolf due to a bite by his cousin Jordy (ahaaa family!....), passing him the curse. 3 nights a month he becomes a werewolf and is locked up (or now is, since the gang and himself are aware of this since "Phases").
Note: the werewolf thing is under control (meaning not Oz has a werewolf controls himself, but what to do when he is about to transform), and there is no victim (yet).
Oz: "I'm not really a computer person, you know. Or a work of any kind person.
Willow: They why'd they select you?
Oz: Oh, I sorta test well. Y'know, which is cool. E-except that it leads to jobs.
Willow: Well, don't you have some ambition?
Oz: Oh, yeah! Yeah. E-flat, diminished ninth.
Willow: Huh?
Oz: Well, the E-flat, it's, it's doable, but that diminished ninth, y'know, it's a man's chord. Now, you could lose a finger. "
("What's My Line, Part 2")
P
Pack: The basis of the pack was Kyle's group, to which Xander was accidentally added. That is: Kyle, Heidi, Rhonda, Tor and Xander. The pack is acting as a pack of hyenas. They all have been accidentaly possessed by the hyenas as they were on a school visit and sneaked in the 'hyena house' to play a joke on Lance. Xander was there in to help the poor kid, and ended up as a member of the pack (even if he couldn't stand Kyle and his friends before).
Page (Deidre): See "Deidre Page".
Parents-Teachers night: This night feared by numerous students was a nightmare for Buffy. She was supposed to decorate the school hall in order not to be expelled (another idea of this dear Snyder). Except from these "scholar" implications it was although noticable for Spike's attack with some friends. Causing casualties, destruction and fear for the survivors... The attack was officialy led by a gang on PCP. The real implication of that attack (on a Thursday night) was that the casualties for the vampires were too heavy for them to be able to attack on that Saturday night for the St Vigeous.
Parker: See "Jack O'Toole".
Partytown: A costume shop in Sunnydale, actually it is a pretty expensive one. That explains (and helped the gang to find Ethan) why Cordelia (who rented her costume there, not at Ethan's) did not felt under the transformation spell.
Passion: Here is the transcript of the poem "Passion", that Angelus during all the episode bearing the same name. This transcription is based on AleXander Thompson's full transcript of the episode.
"Passion.
It lies in all of us. Sleeping ; waiting.
And though unwanted, unbidden, it will stir open its jaws, and howl.
It speaks to us, guides us.
Passion rules us all. And we obey. What other choice do we have?
Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love, the clarity of hatred, and the ecstasy of grief.
It hurts sometimes more than we can bear.
If we could live without passion, maybe we'd know some kind of peace. But we would be hollow.
Empty rooms, shuttered and dank.
Without passion, we'd be truly dead."
Pat: A friend of Joyce, that she met at her book-club. She seems to be a nice woman, but my feeling is that she has a pretty boring life so she gets involed in others' life (and I think Buffy back me up on that one). She said she had a Spanish class, but it doesn't mean she is a regular teacher, it could be night class or a class for a women-club (especially since making Empandas during the class is not one of the priority of teachers in school. Unfortunately...). She was killed (broken neck) by a zombie, and later put on the Nigerian mask on, thus becoming the incarnation of Ovu Mobani.
Patrice: She is a member of the Order of Taraka. She was at the career fair pretending to be a policewoman. When She called Buffy's name, she drew her gun and try to kill the Slayer. Except shooting Oz and taking Johnathon hostage, she couldn't do much more (especially since Kendra arrived to help Buffy). She died (or so it seemed) in the fire that burnt down the church where Drusilla's ritual was held.
Buffy: "She was definitely one of the Taraka gang, Giles, and way gun happy." ("What's My Line, Part 2")
Pedro the Cabana Boy: Expression used by Xander to imagine the guy with who Cordelia cheated on him (that what he thaught) during her luxury summer vacations to Mexico with her parents. But he wasn't the only one to be jealous (see "Mr. Faithful").
Willow: "I wonder what she's doing right now.
Xander: Oh, I know what she's doin'. Gabbing to all of her friends about her passionate affair with Pedro the Cabana Boy, laughing about me, thinking how she still might have feelings about me. (silence) Oh, it's possible you were talking about Buffy." ("Anne")
People for the Ethical Treatment of Werewolves: Fictive name of an association that Cain image Giles and Buffy would belong too if it existed. They kept on trying to catch the werewolf roaming in Sunnydale, while he was up to kill him for his fur.
Cain: "First they tell me I can't hunt an elephant for its ivory... Now I've gotta deal with People for the Ethical Treatment of Werewolves." ("Phases")
Percell (Kelly): See "Brittany Oswald".
Percepto Girl: Expression used by Buffy in "What's My Line, Part 2" talking to Kendra (and pretty upset with her since she met her for the first time).
Kendra: "Dis one is dirty! I can feel it!
Buffy: That's really good for you, Percepto Girl, but we're not gonna get anything out of him if he's, Oh... say... unconscious. Where's Angel? "
Percy West: A basketball player at Sunnydale high. Since he was a very good player, but sucked in history Snyder asked (I should have said obliged) Willow to tutor the kid so that he wouldn't be kept away from the playground (if players get too bad grades, they have to stop playing until they get better grades). Basically he was trying to make it as if Willow was gonna do the homework for him. (Un)fortunately he met the evil vampire-double of Willow (in Dopplegängland), who kicked his lily ass on the Bronze's pool table.... Thinking it was Willow who did that, he suddenly got must more respect for her, and had a vivid interest for History. After a while they both got closer from each other, and he worked better, and she supported him and the basketball team ("Earshot").
Snyder: "As far as I'm concerned, this is a marriage made in heaven. Willow Rosenberg, despite her unsavory associations, represents the pinnacle of academic achievement at Sunnydale High. Percy West represents a devastating fast break and 50% from behind the three-point line." ("Dopplegängland")
Pergamum Codex: See "Codex".
Perren (Dr.): See "Doug Perren".
Pete: Debbie's boy friend apparently very attentive and romantic. In reality the weirdess-psycho-jealous guy I've seen... He had a formula so that he would become some sort of Hulk. He was killed by Angel, who came to rescue Buffy.
Oz: "Yeah. A freshman told me that Pete had eight iced cafe' mochas and just lost it.
Buffy: That's better than the estrogen theory. I heard he took all of his mother's birth control pills.
(...)
Willow: Well, we got ahold of, uh, Pete's lab books and stuff, and Mr. Science was doing a Jekyll/Hyde deal. He was afraid Debbie was gonna leave him, so he mixed this potion to become super mas macho." ("The Beauty and the Beasts")
Petronzi: See "Gage Petronzi".
P.C.P. : Acronyme. Here lets use a classical dictionary definition: "Phencyclidine hydrochloride. An aneasthetic drug for animals which some people take illegally because it produces hallucinations." That's what Snyder said of the vampires that attacked the Parents-Teachers night, that they took PCP. They were supposed to be a gang on PCP (that explains the weird faces seen by witnesses --like Joyce--) and furnished an easy explanation to give to the press (the Chief of police being although in the secret).
Phenobarbital: A strong anesthesic used notably in tranquilizing-guns, to put to sleep large or dangerous animal from a safe distance. This is the drug used by Giles to go Oz-hunting, when he was under his werewolf form in "Phases".
Giles: "I put enough Phenobarbital in this thing to sink a small elephant. It should be enough for a large werewolf."
Philip Henry: Old friend of Giles, in London. He had the Mark of Eyghon tattooed on his right arm. Giles had not seen him for 20 years when he was murdered at the library's door in Sunnydale high school. He tried to inform Giles that Eyghon was back and wanted to kill them one by one. Was killed by Deidre's corpse (transpossed by Eyghon). The demon then tried to kill Giles with his corpse.
Phone: This is a very generic definition, but I had to create that entry, just to put one of my (All Time?) favorite quote from Xander :
Giles: "Well, maybe Buffy unplugged the phone.
Xander: No, it's a statistical impossibility for a sixteen-year-old girl to unplug her phone."
("What's My Line, Part 1")
Pizza Delivery Career: Counter-attack from Cordy to Xanders "Extra-terrestrial" criticism in "Reptile Boy".
Cordelia: "You'll go to college someday, Xander. I just know your pizza delivery career will take you so many exciting places."
Plans: Conclusion (much later in the episode) of the "Overlooked One". Giles: 2, Buffy: 1.
Buffy: Hey! Look at us! We came up with a plan.
A good plan.
Giles: Alright. We'll meet there tonight after it closes.
Buffy: No! Bad plan. I have other plans. Dance plans. (gets a stern look from Giles) (exhales) Canceled plans. ("Inca Mummy Girl", AleXander's Transcripts).
Platt: The school councellor at Sunnydale high. That's simply a nice term to say the school psychologist. Buffy had to see him to be able to come back at school. Debbie saw him to for her 'success issue' (you can only see that in the US...). Personally I liked this guy, he was nice and smart (okay he was more smooking than a fireman, but hell with that...). He was killed by Pete (debbie's boyfriend) who was jealous of him. Buffy found him.
Mr. Platt: "We're not gonna be friends. You have friends already, I hope. Friends are a good thing. Mmm... They like you, agree with you, tell you what you wanna hear. That's not what you need right now. What you need is a trained, not... too crazy professional who will always give you his honest opinion. (silence) Which I offer." ("The Beauty and the Beasts")
Podell (Brittany): See "Owen Stadeel".
Pole (Mr.): Driver Educator teacher. Unluckily Cordy's teacher... He had a car destroyed after she was blinded by a witchcraft spell (see Catherine Madison).
Police: Police ain't high in Xander's esteem it seems:
Buffy: "As in police?
Xander: As in polyester, doughnuts and brutality." ("What's My Line, Part 1")
Poltergeist: The Poltergeist is an 'angry ghost'. As all ghost it stays in our world because its will is still attached to something (usually you can refer to this thing as an 'anchor'). In his case, the reason is often revenge. Thus the ghost will seek his revenge by disturbing the life of his ennemy, his successors or, sometimes, the unfortunate owners of the house.
Willow: A ghost? Cool!
Xander: Oh, no, no. No. No cool. This was no wimpy chain rattler. This was: 'I'm dead as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore.'
Giles: Well, despite the 'Xander-speak', that's a fairly accurate definition of a poltergeist."
("I Only Have Eyes For You")
Pop's Pumkin Patch: This is the first place we see in the episode "Halloween". Buffy fought and ashed there a vampire. This is also the fisrt time we saw Spike spying Buffy (he had a minion there with a camcorder). Anyway Pop surely wasn't happy next day when he saw the mess they left behind....
Possession: The possession is the control over someone else's body by 'invading' their spirit. Usually a possession would be a demon, directing a human beings acts. Possession requires spells or magic powers. Normally a counter spell or an exorcism will free the victim from its state. Another type of possession is 'trans-possession' (see def.). Usually, annimals can feel the difference between a normal person and a possessed one.
Post: See "Gwendolyn Post".
Power Girl: This nickname refers to Buffy. Not surprinsing you'd tell me... Actually kinda. Because it does not refers to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". But to the 8 years old Buffy (or younger). This nickname has nothing to do with special powers, it just comes from kids' game between Buffy and Celia (her cousin).
Flashback of Little Buffy and Celia. Celia is on the bedroom floor covered with pillows and writhing around, pretending to be trapped under a pile of snow and ice.
Celia: "Help me, help! Avalanche! Help! Help! I'm trapped! Avalanche! Help! Help!
Little Buffy comes in through the door and stops in a heroic stance with her hands on her hips.
Little Buffy: Power Girl to the rescue! She kneels down and starts to heave off the pillows as though they're huge, heavy blocks of ice and snow and thuds them aside.
Celia: Help me! Help! Help! Please, help! Buffy gets the last pillows off of Celia's face, and she sits up.
Celia: You saved me! Thank you, Power Girl!" ("Killed By Death", AleXander's Transcripts)
Prescott Lane: A street in Sunnydale. That's where the old bordinghouse was built.
Primals: Sect of annimal worshipers. They use (or at least try to use) trans-possession in order to draw the spirit of an annimal (prey annimal preferred) into themselves. The process is suppose to purify them from their 'humanity' or soul, a abomination to them. The annimal state being, to them, superior to the human state. The zookeeper was a primal. To complete the trans-possession ritual, the subjects must accomplish a 'predatory act', supposed to symbolize their annimal side. The pack, by teasing Lance, unconsciously accomplished this act.
Prime-Evil: See "First Evil".
Princess: Term used for Drusilla. It wouldn't be in the dictionary if it was only an affectuous name used by her and Spike (like honey or whatever...). But Drusilla in her childish and twisted brain actually seems to be a princess... She used this "title" when we first met Spike and Dru in "School Hard".
Princess Margareth: A nickname given too Wesley by Faith in "Dopplegängland". Obviously because of his English origin (thus the reference to monarchy) and his difficulty to follow Faith in the obstacle field (Princess being usually seen a non-sportive little girls).
Private Harris: Joke from Xander on himself (he was costumed as a soldier for Halloween). He actually became a soldier from the 33rd (thanks to Ethan). The good part is that after he recovered his real self, he remembered everything that concerned the army base next to Sunnydale, where the 33rd are based. The Colonel Newsome is the boss of the base. Cultural Note: A private is the title used in the US for soldiers.
He used this term again in "The Beauty and the Beasts").
Xander: "Private Harris reporting for..." (...) ("Halloween")
Xander: "Well, I still remember all of it. I know procedure, ordnance, access codes, everything. I know the whole layout for this base, and I'm pretty sure I can put together an M-16 in 57 seconds." ("Innocence")
Prom Princess: Used in "Homecoming" along with "Fiesta Queen", Buffy was refering to her years at Hemery high, before she became the Slayer. She used to be very popular on campus (and a kinda like Cordy too, ew, some stuff are painful to say...), and was regretting to be pretty much unpopular for her Senior year...
Prophecy: A prophecy is an anuncement of future event to come, or that may come. Most prophecies are enwritten, because they were made in much earlier times and spoken prophecies are harder to transmitt. Aurelius, the Scriptures and other works are about, or include prophecies. They are hard to understand, because the style is old, they are sometimes codified, in which case the reader must find out who is who and what is what in the text.
Puppy: This is Angel in the Bizarro Land. Willow was the first one to use the expression, but it could have been a nickname commonly used by vampires. Angel was caught by the Master's minions, but he let him live. So he was locked in the basement of the Bronze and tortured almost all day long.
Willow: "That's right, Puppy... Willow's gonna make you bark." ("The Wish")
Q
Queen C: The initial "C" and the modesty of the title are clear: this is about Cordelia. Actually it's what's written on her licence plates... Queen of what, I dunno, but definetly not of driving.
Quentin Travers: A member of the Watchers' Council. He came to Sunnydale to prepare the cruciamentum with Giles, Hobson and Blair. He was pleased with Buffy's performance but agreed with the Council that Giles should not be a Watcher anymore. No need to say he is not popular at all in Sunnydale anymore. He doesn't seem to take humanity (like trying that the Slayer does not die during the test) as an important factor... If you wanna call him (in England) the password is "Monkey".
Quentin: "I understand that you're upset...
Buffy: You understand nothing. You set that monster loose, and he came after my mother.
Quentin: You think the test was unfair?
Buffy: I think you better leave town before I get my strength back..." ("Helpless")
R
Randall: One of the Eyghon initites in London (when Giles was 21). Eyghom took fully control of his body once and the other bearers of the Mark of Eyghon tried to exorcice him. Randall was killed by the ritual.
Ratboy: Snyder! Hehe, this expression was used by Buffy when Snyder became a teenager again and was following Buffy, Will and Oz all around.
Buffy: "Ratboy and I are going to the source."("Band Candy")
Razorbacks: The name for the school teams of the Sunnydale high. The main ones being: the football team, the basketball team and the swimteam (See "Football" too).
Real World House: This expression should be clear to most people in the US and to anybody who has MTV. Basically you take a group of young guys and girls you sent them in an house somewhere ( Hawaï, Seatle,...) and you have cameramen following them all the time. Then each week MTV shows an extract of what happened during that week. Since I'm on this issue, I'd like to underline that the "only real" last comment made by Buffy is very right. Because this stuff isn't live so the mix from the week could be different from reality (like changing the whole meaning of what one guy said just by showing on TV half of his sentence or totally out of the context,...), or making it like something major happened this week (the audimat people, the audimat is what rule TV...). I'm just telling that because several Real World participants complained after their season ended on the way MTV distorded reality to makes it cooler for spectators (not caring about participants).
Buffy: "Uh, yes on the studying, no on tonight. I'm putting in Mom time. She's been drastic ever since I got back. And Giles is even worse. I'm supervised 24/7. It's like being in the Real World house, only real." ("Band Candy")
Rebecca of Sunnyhell Farm: See "Sunnyhell Farm"
Rebel: "I'm a rebel." Knowing that this expression comes from Willows I had to write it down... She was answering to one of Xander's comment about her being "bad to the bone" when she admitted being a lookout for Sheila smoking in 5th grade. Used in "School Hard".
Rehabilitation Center: The F.B.I. locates the students like Marcie and send them to this center to "learn to be a useful member of the society again." In the text book Marcie studied her first day at the center, the chapter 11's (page 54) title is "Assassination and Infiltration". Interesting rehabilitation...
Reliable-Dog-Geyser Person: See "Old Reliable".
Reliquary: This a religious object (Christian, but other religions might have different names for it), mostly used during the middle age and before. This box was used to keep the remainings (or "reliques" -- which explain the name) of a Saint. Not all the body of the saint was contained in it, often it was only part of it, sometimes it could contain a sacred object linked to this saint. The reliquary could either be placed in a tomb (but rarely did religious people wanted to bury such a sacred item) or more commonly in a church/chapel/cathedral (sometimes in the foundations under the altar). The Du Lac Cross was kept in a reliquary in the man's maussoleum.
Reptile Boy: Expression used by Buffy (strangely in "Reptile Boy") to get the attention of Machida as he was going to eat Cordelia (Cmmon!!! She have let him eat her and then save Callie ).
Research Boy: Expression used by Xander (after a demonstration of knowledge about Greek mythology) in "Out of Mind, Out of Sight". Expression that nicely counter-balance "Knowledge Girl" from Buffy, though Xander wasn't here when she used it:
"Research Boy comes through with the knowledge!"
Restefield Cemetery: One of the 12 cemetery of Sunnydale. It is in the Restfield cemetery that is built the crypt of the Von Hauptman family (where was buried the Glove of Myhnegon). It is also there that Xander spotted Angel (who was supposed to be in Hell) for the first time. Restfield... quiet a nice name for a cemetery.
Restoration Spell/Ritual: A spell that basically consists of calling back the soul of an undead (especially a vampire) from the ether where it's trapped into an Orb of Thesulah. Then to transfer it from the orb to the vampire. The ritual only affects the target mentally (it is a still a vampire but now it is conscious of its acts). The target don't have to be there to be affected. The first part of the spell is in latin (the orb part) and then it is in Rumanian (the transfer part). I will put below the 2 versions of the spell that we know of: the original curse by the Kalderash and the spell by Willow. Both are adapted (to be focused on the ritual only) from AleXander's Transcripts of "Becoming, Part 1 & 2". Because the detail of the spell were in ancient Rumanian it couldn't be used (until Jenny Calendar developped a program in "Passion" to translate it, translation found by Buffy in "Becoming, Part 1").
A wood in Rumania, 1898. A gypsy camp. The dead body of the young Kalderash Gypsy girl that Angelus has recently killed is on a table dressed in white and lying on an intricately patterned quilt with candles burning around the perimeter. Members of the clan are laying rose petals on her. The Elder Woman sitting beneath a tent canopy and chanting over an Orb of Thesulah surrounded by candles within a sacred circle.
Elder Woman: Nici mort, nici de-al fiintei, Te invoc, spirit al trecerii. Reda trupului ce separa omul de animal!
[Translation: Neither dead, nor of the living, I invoke you, spirit of the passing. Return to the body what distinguishes Man from the beast!]
Elder Woman: Asa sa fie. [Translation: So it shall be.] Utrespur aceastui. [Translation: Restore this one.]
The glowing Orb suddenly gets very bright for an instant, and then goes dark. Angelus' eyes grow bright for a moment, then return to normal, his soul now restored.
The Orb is surrounded by the candles within a sacred circle. Cordelia stands on one side and waves burning herbs and incense over the Orb. Oz stands on the other side with an open Latin book. Willow sits up in her bed holding the printout of the Rumanian curse.
Oz: "Quod perditum est, invenietur. Translation: What is lost, return.
Willow: Not dead... nor not of the living. Spirits of the interregnum, I call. 'Let him know the pain of humanity, gods. Reach your wizened hands to me. Give me the sword...' [here we have a hole in the ritual]
Willow: Gods, bind him. Cast his heart from the... evil... realm. Return. I call on...
Without warning Willow's head snaps back and she looks up with her eyes wide open. Her head snaps back down and her eyes stare into the Orb. She begins to chant steadily in Rumanian as though possessed.
Willow: Te implor, Doamne, nu ignora aceasta rugaminte. [Translation: I implore you, Lord, do not ignore this request.]
Willow: Nici mort, nici al fiintei... Lasa orbita sa fie vasul care-i va transporta, sufletul la el.
[Translation: Neither dead, nor of the living... Let this Orb be the vessel that will carry his soul to him.]
Willow: Asa sa fie! Asa sa fie! Acum! [Translation: So it shall be! So it shall be! Now!]
Willow: Acum!" [Translation: Now!"]
The Orb glows brightly for a brief moment and goes dark. Willow suddenly relaxes, and looks around blankly. Angel's soul is restored.
Reverse a Spell: Here is a counter-spell to reverse the effects of one or severeal spell(s) casted by the same person. You need the person's Spell book and to mix a potion (unfortunately I can't detail it's content). But my opinion is that you will have to change the name of the gods/deities invocated in this spell. To me the names change according to the who the spell(s) invokated (here Corsheth and Gilail).
Giles: "The center is dark. Centrum est obscurus. The darkness breathes. Tenebrae respiratis. The listener hears. Hear me! Unlock the gate. Let the darkness shine. Cover us with holy fear. Corsheth and Gilail! The gate is closed! Receive the dark! Release the unworthy! Take of mine energy and be sated! Be sated! Release the unworthy! Release! Release! Release !" ("The Witch")
Rhonda: She is a student, and among the little band of Kyle. Also became a member of the 'Pack' (see def.).
Richard (Anderson): One of the Delta Zeta Kappa member. He is a college senior and have an important role in the frat. His family is really rich (Anderson Farms, Anderson Aeronautics, Anderson Cosmetics No wonder Cordy likes the guy). He drives an (expensive) black BMW (with dark tint windows). He invited Buffy to come with Cordy to a party given to the fraternity house. He is bragging around and is, to put it simply, a jerk.
Rickie: Lily/Chantarelle's boyfriend. They were pretty much always broke, but they were planning to get a place (his cousin could get him a job at the car wash). But he follwed Ken from the "Family-Home" and worked as a slave for 60 years or so... (you know, things don't always turned the way you want). So once back on earth he committed suicide by drinking a bottle of drain wash (ew.. that must hurt like hell!). Buffy found his corpse in a dark street, and recognized his aged body because of the tattoo of half of an heart on his forearm, with 'Lily' written in a ribbon (Lily/Chantarelle, had the other side of the heart, with 'Rickie' in the ribbon).
Rigby: One of Xander's Cousin. Probably older than him. He lent his tuxedo (=vest+pants+gilet suit) to Xander for the Homecoming of 1998.
Xander: "Special. That's why I spared no expense on the tux.
Willow: The tux? I thought you, uh, borrowed it from your cousin Rigby.
Xander: Expense to my pride, Will. (...)" ("Homecoming")
Ripper: Former nickname given to Giles in his (agitated and mysterious) youth (he was 21) with Ethan Rayne and the other bearer of the mark of Eyghon. It's kind of Giles dark side (like Uncle Roary according to Xander).
Ethan: "Oh, and we all know that you are the champion of innocents and all things pure and good, Rupert. It's quite a little act you've got going here, old man.
Giles: It's no act. It's who I am.
Ethan: Who you are? The Watcher, sniveling, tweed-clad guardian of the Slayer and her kin? I think not. I know who you are, Rupert, and I know what you're capable of. But they don't, do they? They have no idea where you come from." ("Halloween")
Roary: One of Xander's uncles. Xander compared him to Giles (when Buffy said she saw him drinking in "Dark Age"). He also rented to Xander the Chevrolet Bel Air convertible, until he got his mobility back (he got some injury).
Xander: "Yep, yep, I knew this would happen. Nobody can be wound as straight and narrow as Giles without a dark side erupting. My Uncle Roary was the stodgiest taxidermist you've ever met by day. By night, it was booze, whores, and fur flying. Were there whores?"
Robicheaux's Guide to Muscles and Tendons: One of the 3 books Willow found in Chris Epps' locker.
Rodney Munson: For most of the principals of the area this guy directly came out of the Hellmouth... From what Willow and Xander told us he has a heavy background. We first meet him in "Inca Mummy Girl", but he has lived a long time in Sunnydale. He ain't very smart and compensate by being violent. Note that he is certainly uses aggressivity as a self-defense mecanism (linked to his mental deficiency). For exemple Willow can approach and talk to him (note evrybody can do that) and he won't be violent/weird, on the contrary. He also seems to appreciate degradation. The first thing we saw him doing was the mutilation of a mask exposed in the museum. He is also the one who let Ampatta break free. He though the plate she was holding in har hands was cool. So he tried to steal it, breaking the seal that kept her quietly lying in her stone coffin. This was his last practical joke... Rodney wore metal braces on his teeth, that's how Willow noticed that the mummy in the tomb at the museum wasn't the Inca princess.
Xander: Uh, that's Rodney Munson. He's God's gift to the bell curve. What he lacks in smarts he makes up in lack of smarts.
Willow: You just don't like him 'cause of that time he beat you up every day for five years.
("Inca Mummy Girl")
Rofocale: Under this entry I will write down the spell that the Shaman/Marabou used to make Angel's soul depart. Or actually the fake ritual he made up to fool the mayor and Faith. Also they were edited to only focus on the spell, the description and the translation come from AleXander's Transcripts of "Enemies":
Faith splatters a vial of blood onto Angel's shirt. Out of the shadows behind them the Shaman appears and holds out his blackened hands, weaving them around as he chants.
Shaman: (transliterated Arabic) "Yaa shayTann, inna nafsak laa tatba'uk ba'd. Yaa Rufukayl al-'aZim, shattit nafsah fii anHaa'i 'I-'aalam al- arba'a!
(Translation: Demon, your soul no longer belongs to you. Mighty Rofocale, scatter his soul to the four corners of the world!)
A ball of energy appears between the Shaman's hands, and a bolt shoots out and surrounds Angel. The globe flashes brightly again and again. Angel bends over backward in pain as the Shaman completes the spell.
Shaman: (transliterated Arabic) Yaa ruuh idhhabii! Yaa nafs idhhabii! Utrukii ayyaah wa-'trukiih naHruuman wa-najisan!" (Translation: Spirit depart! Soul depart! Leave this one and leave him bereft and unclean!)
The globe flashes and dissipates in a burst of energy. Angel collapses to the floor face down. When it is done, the Shaman backs away and disappears into the shadows.
Rogaine Boy: Insult from a jealous Xander to the hospital guard in "Killed By Death" (Cordy just act as if she was attracted to him, so that Xander could sneak around). I personally see 2 reference in that expression. First the sport (popular in Australia and North America, since the late 1940's -I was told at least 1947-. It's basically a cross navigation race that can last between 12 to 24 hours). This could be a reference to the guard, who works out. More likely the second sense refers to a well-know drug that prevents hair-loss (he could reproach to Cordelia to be interested in guys so old that need rogaine --which by the way wasn't true in that case, she only pretended--.
Xander: "Could you make just a little more with the touchy-gropey?
Cordelia: Jealous?
Xander: Of Rogaine boy? I don't think so. (...)" ("Killed By Death")
Roller Boy: Expression that Angelus used to mock Spike when he was in his wheelchair. Used for the first time in "Passion".
Angelus: "Don't worry, roller boy. I've got everything under control."
Roscoe the Weightlifter: Metaphor used by Buffy to evocate the life in prison (partly composed of weaker guys being raped by the stronger ones). She was speaking about Jim Stanley (who had shot himself after murdering his love/teacher).
Buffy: "Sure I feel lousy. For her. He's a murderer and he should pay for it.
Willow: With his life?
Buffy: No, he should be doing sixty years in a prison, breaking rocks and making special friends with Roscoe the Weightlifter.
Xander: Yikes. The quality of mercy is not Buffy." ("I Only Have Eyes For You")
Rosenberg: See "Ira Rosenberg", "Sheila Rosenberd" or "Willow Rosenberg".
Round Robin: I couldn't tell if it's a 100% pure gang expression or simply an expression I don't know about, what is sure it's that the technique was used many times by the gang (even if it was only mentioned for the first time in "Surprise").
Giles: "Round robin?
Willow: It's when everybody calls everybody else's mom and tells them they're staying at everyone's house."
Roy: A Sunnydale high student. Once again a "well thinking person asking for justice". Understand "asshole" (sorry if a kid read that, but that behavior pisses-me off and that's what they are anyway). He was planning to beat up with his friends (how come the "well thinkers" can't do anything alone?) Michael because witches were accused of murdering 2 kids. Roy got all scared and left when Buffy showed up to defend Michael and Amy. See "Mothers Opposed to the Occult" for more detail.
Rupert: (see Giles).
Ruth Greenleigh: See "Greenleigh (Ruth)".
Ryan: A kid that was at the hospital to be healed for a bad flu ("Killed By Death"). Because he had fever (due to his flu) he could see the monster ("der Kindestod") that was killing the kids (among which Tina) and the Dr. Backer. He also gave Buffy a drawing of what the monster looked liked, for him it was Death (he wasn't too far from the truth). He almost became a victim too, but Buffy saved him (and killed der Kindestod).
Joyce: "Oh, Buffy, here. Um, this came in the mail. (hands it to Buffy)
Buffy: (reads the return address and smiles) It's from Ryan. (opens it)
Joyce: The boy from the hospital? Buffy takes out the paper inside and unfolds it. Joyce looks down at it.
Joyce: (smiles) Oh, he drew you a picture.
Cut to a shot of the picture. It's of Buffy standing over the Kindestod with her foot up on its chest. The monster's neck is split open and blood is gushing out.
Joyce: How... nice." ("Killed By Death", AleXander's Transcripts)
S
Sadie Hawkins Dance: Let's begin by a cultural note (for non-americans & americans as well) on Sadie Hawkins. According to the rules of that dance girls are supposed to ask boys out for that dance (and pay for the tickets,...). But this dance is only a edulcorated version of the "Sadie Hawkins Day", which began in the 30's (and is not a hairy-leg-feminist idea).
"On November 1, 1938, The Charleston Gazette sponsored Morris Harvey's first Sadie Hawkins Day celebration. The race and mock wedding that served as its finale were held between halves of the Morris Harvey - New River State football game. It was believed to be the first such celebration in the nation, the genesis of a national craze. The City News Reel Company filmed that first celebration, and it played as a newsreel around the country. Unfortunately, that film has been lost.
Sadie Hawkins Day was named for a cartoon character developed by Al Capp for his Li'l Abner comic strip. Sadie Hawkins was so ugly that her father, Mayor of Dog Patch, U.S.A., feared he would never marry her off. In desperation, he decreed a Sadie Hawkins Day. All unmarried men in Dogpatch would get a ten minute head start before Sadie and the other unmarried women began running after them. The man each woman caught would end up in front of Marryin' Sam for a shotgun wedding." (Full Version of the "Sadie Hawkins Day" text @ http://www.uchawv.edu/library/sadie.html, you guys wanna check it up, it's pretty detailed on that issue)
The dance takes place every year at Sunnydale High. It is the night of the dance, in 1955, that James killed Ms. Newman and then himself. From this night up to the Sadie Hawkins Dance of 1998 their poltergeists have been replaying the scene around this anniversary date (and doing couple poltergeist tricks).
Cordelia: "I hope you guys aren't going to the Sadie Hawkins Dance tonight, 'cause I'm organizing a boycott. Do you realize that the girls have to ask the guys? And pay and everything? I mean, whose genius idea was that?
Xander: Obviously, some hairy-legged feminist.
Cordelia: Really! Well, we need to nip this thing in the bud. I mean, otherwise, things are going to get really scary." ("I Only Have Eyes For You").
St. Micheal: An high school in the Sunnydale area. Brittany Oswald was a junior at St. Micheal.
St Vigeous: He led a crusade of vampires that swept through the Middle East (Edessa, Harran,...). The night of the St Vigeous vampires' powers are the strongest. Because it (the crusade) was led in Middel East, the calculation of the St Vigeous night must be based on the Mesopotanian calendar. The Order of Aurelius made a mistake calculating the precise date so the Chronicles won't be right on that. Works after 1066 must be consulted in order to get the exact date. It's that night that the follower of Collin wanted to get revenge from Buffy for the slaying (and bone shattering) of the Master. An expedition led by Spike (although he's not one of Collin's followers...) was supposed to happen on that particular Saturday. But Spike couldn't wait and led a first encounter fight against Buffy during the parents-teachers night on Thursday. Numerous vampires died in that attack which destroyed any hope that the St Vigeous could be a bloody night. Extract of a text Giles read in his dusty book:
"For three nights the unholy ones scourge themselves into a fury, culminating in a savage attack on the night of St. Vigeous." ("School Hard")
Sam Zabuto: See "Zabuto (Sam)".
Sancton: See "Daryl Sancton".
Sanderson: A man who used to work at the bank. He was turned into a vampire. To me he had also a kind of metaphorical role: he was an adult turned into a vampire, but is it 'less worse' than the killing of the children.
Angel: "They were children. Innocent. It makes a difference.
Buffy: And Mr. Sanderson from the bank had it coming? (...)" ("Gingerbread")
Sandy: Some poor girl that was killed by the evil double of Willow in "Dopplegängland".
Sanity Fair: Word-game made by Buffy. She and Willow were talking about all the Watchers' test she was going through with Faith, when they came up one the 'crazyness' issue. For those of you who didn't got it, 'Sanity Fair' is a reference to a popular US magazine called 'Vanity Fair'.
Willow: "Competition is natural and healthy. Plus, you'll definitely ace her on the psych tests. Just don't mark the box that says, 'I sometimes like to kill people.'
Buffy: I know Faith's not gonna be on the cover of Sanity Fair, but... she had it rough. Different circumstances, that could be me." ("Dopplegängland")
Sasquatch: Huge annimal of American Indian's Legends (usually in the Northen tribes who lived (or used to) by the forest). That's basically what Americans call "Big Foot" or similar to the creature refered to as the "Abominable Man of the Snow" (legendary annimal of the Himalayan highs). It's usually considered as a mixed between human and beast. It's a strong humanoide cover with furred. Supposed to be intelligent, it's said to be hiding from humans (then I guess it's really intelligent if it understood that...).Anyway wether it is only a legend or a true specie, there was one ("Jo-Jo") chasing Cordelia in "Halloween".
Scapulas: A magic item used to protect one from a (aggressive) spirit. There are several way to prepare them, one is by using sulfur. It as to be worn on a necklace to protect its bearer.
Scary Guy: Angel, so called by Xander. He was telling that he did not trust Angel after what happen when he was Angelus (I'd say 'hate' would be the real term. And I'd say it was more a revenge for Xander, than a real concern for Miss Calendar).
Buffy: "But he's better now. I swear. Look, you guys, he's the one that found the Glove of Myhnegon. He's keeping it safe for us in the mansion.
Xander: Right! Great plan. Leave tons of firepower with the Scary Guy, and leave us to clean up the mess."
("Revelations")
Science Club: Well not much to say about it... I just added this definition to point out that there is a Science Club in Sunnydale high. Some of the members you know are Eric, Chris and naturally Willow.
Science Fair: Like any other high school science fair. Note that Snyder made it mandatory when he came to Sunnydale. Chris Epps is the traditional winner, while Willow finishes second. In the 1998 edition (the mandatory one) you could see topics such as 'The Effects of Sub-Violet Light Spectrum Deprivation on the Development of Fruit Flies' (Willow) or 'The Tomato: Fruit or Vegetable?' (Cordelia).
Science Lab: Room 109 of Sunnydale High. When not used for classes, experimentations, teacher kidnapping, you may find Willow there. She uses to analyse elements found by the gang, or as a place to cast a spell (Giles actually used it that way too in "The Witch").
Science Lab (Old): The ancient lab was in a building now empty. Chris and Eric had set up there their material and equipment to work on the body of the girl they were making for Daryl. It had a fire lighted up inside (that burnt both the corpse and Daryl), but the building wasn't destroyed by the flames (although it was probably damaged).
Scientific American: One of the favorite magazine of Willow, and her friends of the Science Club. Note that this is a real scientific magazine, not one of Joss tricks.
Scooby Gang: Expression from Xander, used the first time in "What's My Line, Part 1". This is a very popular expression in the Bronze (the posting board, not the bar).
Xander: "C'mon, Cordelia. You wanna be a member of the Scooby Gang you gotta be willing to be inconvenienced every now and then."
Scott Hope: A Sunnydale high student who have had a crush on Buffy for a while. He finally asked her out in Fall 1998 (in "Faith, Hope and Trick"). After several unsuccesful tries (well, Buffy thought she had killed and send her last boy friend in Hell), he made it (and went with her at the Buster Keaton festival in town).
Buffy: (...) "But he is... nice, and he's funny.
Faith: And quite a muffin.
Buffy: Blueberry. That crunchy, munchy stuff on top. But my most favorite thing so far... is that he doesn't seem to be any kind of Hell Beast." ("The Beauty and the Beasts")
Sean(1): Just a student that got into a fight once with Laura's boyfriend. According to Laura he started it. Both boys had to go in detention.
Sean (2): Sean is also the name of a member of the swim team. The 4th best swimmer, the last one too, to turn into a sea monster. There is no way to know if he is the Sean referred to just beyond.
Sebancaya: The mountain god for Incas. The mummy exposed in the museum was a human sacrifice to Sebancaya 500 years ago. ("Inca Mummy Girl").
But it is also the name of the region of Eastern Peru were the mummy came from.
Sewer: See "Tunnels".
Shady Hill: One of the 12 cemeteries of Sunnydale. It is in Shady Hill that Faith met Lagos and tried to kill him, but missed.
Shannisse: Just by the name you should have guessed it's one of Cordy's friends at Sunnydale High...
Sharpsville: See "Mehrenstadt Text".
Shelter Club: Another place in Sunnydale. At éeast we know there is some other place to go other than the Bronze. "Dingoes Ate My Baby" played at the Shelter Club for the Halloween 1998 night.
Sheila: A Sunnydale student. Execptional because she was at a tie first plave with Buffy, on Snyder's trouble-makers list. Buffy's fire in Hemery's sport complex is equalled by Sheila's stabbing a horticulture teacher with pruning shears (=secateurs). She was also tied-up to Buffy for the class-cutting and fights-starting stats. She was supposed to organize the parent-teacher night with Buffy in order not to be expelled. She didn't seemed to be concerned anyway. According to Willow she was already smoking in 5th grade (Willow was a lookout once for her). She ended up with Spike (after he killed Dell and Dwayne discretly) who brought her to Drusilla to feed. She was turned into a vampire and tried to kill Buffy by surprise during the Parent-Teachers night attack. She ran away in fear after Buffy kicked her butt and ashed a vampire in front of her.
Sheila Rosenberg: Willow's mother, Ira's wife. She works a lot (journalist, or business woman I'm not sure). She doesn't see Willow much, nor take much interest in her activities. We met her for the first time in "Gingerbread", she apparently knows Joyce, where she took an active part in the M.O.O. association. Willow noted that she has too a selective memory (I don't recall trying to burn my daughter but I recall that she is dating a musician).
Sherlock: Nickname given to Willow by Buffy in "Killed By Death", as they were illegally going through the files of the now dead Dr. Backer. It narurally refers to the world wide famous Detective Sherlock Holmes, a character created and written by Conan Doyle.
Dr. Backer's office. Buffy opens the door and pokes in her head. Seeing that it's empty she opens the door further to let Willow in, checks the hall and closes it behind her. She starts to looks around and checks out the reference volumes on the shelves by the fridge. Willow looks over the papers on his desk.
(...)
Willow: "Hey, wait, I think I have something.
Buffy: Hmm. Sherlock." ("Killed By Death", AleXander's Transcripts)
Sherman Jeffries: One of the mysterious author Giles read. One of his works deals with cults. That how Giles figured out the "predatory act" for primals.
Sid: Sid is a puppet. He used to be a demon hunter, but a curse by a mean and powerful demon changed him into a wood dummy. He was stuck as a puppet since (we don't know the exact date, just that he was still kinda young in the 30s). In order to be free (understand 'rest in peace'), he has to kill the brotherhood of the seven. He came to Sunnydale to get the last one. He was helped by a student named Morgan Shay. He tried to kill Buffy thinking she was the demon he was looking for, but then the situation cleared out and they worked together against the demon. The puppet laid still as he pierced the seventh demon's heart. Easy to notice: his sexual obsession (he said to have sex with a Korean Slayer in the 30s).
Silverwareman: (Xander's expression). See "Fork Guy".
Sire: Sire is the term used to design the vampire that turns a human into a vampire and innitiates him to the night life. For example: Angelus is Spike and Drusilla's Sire. Usually vampires respect their sire for he/she is older (thus usually more powerful) and he/she teaches to the new recruit how to survive under his/her new form.
Sir Robert Kane's Twilight Compendium: One of the book in Giles' occult library. Gwendolyn asked him if he had it. Apparently one of the major works on occulism...
Sisterhood of Jhe (The): An Apocalypse cult which tries to bring forth the end of the world. Buffy and the gang fought them in "The Zeppo". The members of that cult are all female demons. Apparently they form a unique race (either they are a group of demon who formed the Sisterhood, or all the newborns join the cult), they all have a grey skin, red eyes and a bunch on horns (sexy huh?!). They are very good fighters, and the 1Slayers alone against one of them would have a hard time.
Buffy: "'Sisterhood of Jhe. Race of female demons, fierce warriors...' Eww. '...celebrate victory in battle by eating their foes.' They couldn't just pour Gatorade on each other?" ("The Zeppo, AleXander's Transcripts)
Sister Sunshine: See "Chantarelle".
Slayee: Expression used by Buffy in "School Hard":
"Vampire: Slayer!
Buffy: Slayee!"
Slayer: There is only one slayer, the chosen one (this is the original rule, I'll come back on it later). a slayer is a young girl (approximately 15-16), who has no special power, other than her fighting capacities (strength, dexterity, constitution). The Slayer fights against any evil lurking around her. Nothing differentiates a future Slayer from other girls. Once she is called (some times before, like Kendra), a watcher guides and train her. A new Slayer is activated when the old one dies. This is why, when Buffy laid dead for a couple minutes, Kendra was activated. Faith came at Kendra's death. Either he will be two Slayers now, or one at Buffy final death... nothing is sure.
Slayerettes: This term was first used in "The Witch" by Willow. It was supposed to illustrate the way the team work was to be done (The Slayer & the Slayerettes). This background work, mostly (but not "only") consisting of library research. Later replaced by the term "Scooby Gang" or "the Gang".
SlayerFest '98: A little atraction in Sunnydale for the tourists set up by our friend Trick. You want to play the game, you pay the entry fee and then you have to kill the two Slayers to win the gran prize. But the participants mistook and it was Buffy and Cordy that were released in Miller's Woods to be hunted (while Faith was at the Homecoming dance). The Competitors were: the 3 Germans (among which the Guenstahler brothers), the demon Kulak, Candy and Lyle Gorsh and Jungle Bob. Nobody won this edition. Actually only Lyle and the German boss left untouched, Jungle Bob was injuried, the 4 other died.
Slayer Handbook: A little guide suppose to help the Slayer in her task. I basically tell the 'to-do's' and 'not-to-do's' in the Slayer's job. For example it insists on studies of manuscripts. Kendra scrictly followed its rules. Buffy,... well, she didn't even knew it existed...
Kendra: "I study because it is required. The Slayer handbook insists on it.
Willow: There's a Slayer handbook?
Buffy: Wait. Handbook? What handbook? How come I don't have a handbook?
Willow: Is there a T-shirt, too? 'Cause that would be cool...
Giles: After meeting you, Buffy, I realized that, uh, the handbook would be of no use in your case.
Buffy: Well, what do you mean it would be of no use in my case? Wha- what's wrong with my case?"
("What's My Line, Part 2")
Slayer Kryptonite: A termed used by Xander in "Helpless" to say that the sudden lost of power of Buffy might not come from a spell, but fromthe presence of an object/substance that created that weakness. He was here refering to the 'Superman' story. The hero is an alien from the planet Krypton. On Earth he gained some 'super' powers (That's why he's 'Superman', tricky isn't it?). But the presence of a rock coming from his planet (Kryptonite) or a chemical substitution of that rock would have strong effect on him. Oz went in the debate of the effects of the various Kryptonite Superman ever faced. Note that Xander wasn't that far from truth since Giles used a crystal to hypnothyse Buffy and inject her a serum to make her weak.
Xander: "You know, maybe we're on the wrong track with the whole spell, curse and whammy thing. Maybe what we should be looking for is something like, hum... Slayer Kryptonite.
Oz: Faulty metaphor. Kryptonite kills.
Xander: You're assuming I meant the green Kryptonite. I was referring of course, to the red kryptonite, which drains Superman of his powers.
Oz: Wrong. The gold Kryptonite's the power-sucker. The red Kryptonite mutates Superman into some sort of weird...
Buffy: Guys? Reality?"
Slut-O-Rama and her Disco Dave: Expression used by Cordy in "Faith, Hope and Trick", when she saw an odd couple on the dance floor of the Bronze. The girl was dressed in a provovative way and the guy was some kind of 'Saturday Night Fever' fan. Actually the guy was a vampire looking for his dinner. Too bad for him, his prey was Faith...
Cordelia: "Check out Slut-O-Rama and her Disco Dave. What was the last thing that guy danced to, K.C. and the Sunshine Band?
Buffy: I don't think that guy thrives on sunshine."
Small: See "Leaf Small".
Smoke: A dialogue that took place in "Inca Mummy Girl". It's also the occasion for me to underline that the gang doesn't smoke. And another one to underline that Willow doesn't like smokers (but prefer werewolves to them).
Willow: "On the other hand, maybe Rodney just stepped out for a smoke.
Xander: For twenty-one hours?
Willow: It's addictive, you know.
Giles: We'll deal with that when we've... ruled out evil curses."
Willow: "Well, I like you. You're nice and you're funny. And you don't smoke. Yeah, okay, werewolf, but that's not all the time. I mean, three days out of the month I'm not much fun to be around either."
("Phases")
Smootchie: What Willow wanted from OZ, but couldn't get in "Phases" (definition written by Sun8706).
Smurf: A Smurf is a small humanoid creature who is as high as a human ankle. They are blue skinned and all wear white pants and hats (they go half-naked). There are 99 smurfs + the great smurf (a sage, a bit sorcerer) who wears red clothes (same design as the others only the color changes) + the smurfette (the only female) who wears the white hat, but a white dress. They speak the smurf (e.g. A Smurk eating a cake would say: "I like smurking that cake!"). They have a simple life (when the local sorcerer does try to catch one to put it in one of his potions), which is work-games-parties. Note that in the original version (in French) they are called "Schtroumfs". They are the characters of a popular comics by ...... (and were later in some cartoons)
Buffy compared the Judge to a "Smurf". The first easy common point is that they are blue (although one is small the other big). But I'd like to underline an other thing. Couple years ago I had a chat with a Calfornian puritan woman and for some reason the smurfs ended-up in the conversation (Why, I have no clue...). And she actually told me she didn't liked the Smurfs because they were satanics.....Indeed all the dancing around a fire (and being half-naked I guess) reminds of certain pagan rites. So this little satanic aspect could be also mentioned in Buffy's mouth (honestly there is not a ounce of satanist crap in these little creatures but there might have a negative image attached to them in the (puritan?) American mind . That's a detail but it could have it's implications in this expression.
Buffy: "Everybody keep back. Damage control only. Take out any lesser vamps if you can. I'll handle the Smurf." ("Innocence")
Snyder: The short and bold principal of Sunnydale high hates young people. He sees them as irresponsible, immature, lazy, trivial and bad. He sees himself has watcher of these young people, trying to teach them discipline, responsibilty and punctuality. You can see he chose the perfect job... After a long process he finally expelled Buffy. She was re-admitted due to higher political and legal pressures (no child can be private from education). this guy is not evil, he is to me, badly mean and frustrated. He knows for the demons in Sunnydale and try to hide it from people (although he knows, like the mayor and the chief of police do) and try to fight it to some extend. He doesn't know the mayor is evil, nor that Buffy is the Slayer. I found a quote from "School Hard" that resume very well his mentality:
Snyder : "A lot of educators tell students, 'Think of your principal as your pal.' I say, 'Think of me as your judge, jury, and executioner.'" ("School Hard")
Buffy: "I don't incite! I stopped that boy from killing his girlfriend, ask him. Ask the janitor.
Snyder: People can be coerced, Summers. I'm no stranger to conspiracy. I saw JFK. I'm a truth seeker. I've got a missing gun and two confused kids on my hands. Pieces of the puzzle. And I'm gonna look at all the pieces carefully and rationally, and I'm gonna keep looking until I know exactly how this is all your fault." ("I Only Have Ask For You")
Cordelia: "How about because you're a tiny, impotent Nazi with a bug up his butt the size of an emu?
Buffy: Sums it up.
Cordelia: Don't you think?" ("Becoming, Part 1")
Social Leper Colony: 'Affective' term used by Cordy to design the Gang. She was speaking to Mitch, and in front of the so-called "lepers", who just happened to save her face ("Out of Mind, Out of Sight").
Soliloquy Girl: Expression used by Buffy to qualify... Cordy naturally.
Cordelia: "Hey, I'll have you know that my father brought this bear back from Gstaad years ago. Then all of a sudden these trendoids everywhere started sporting them. So I'm totally not wearing it. Then I thought, hey, I'm the one who started this nationwide craze! What am I ashamed of?
Buffy: Okay, Soliloquy Girl, I just wanted to ask about your egg." ("Bad Eggs")
Solitaires: See "Lonely Ones" or "Vampires".
Sonnets from the Portuguese: A compilations of love poems written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning to her husband Robert. Angel offered a copy (an original I would say) to Buffy for her 18th birthday (in "Helpless"). He wrote 'Always' within the book cover.
Special Needs Boy: Another expression from Angelus aimed at Spike. Since the later one was in a wheelchair, he had to hear a lot of this kind of stuff. Used in "I Only Have Eyes For You".
Angelus: "Oh, yeah! What, with you being Special Needs Boy, I figure I should stick close to home. You and Dru can always use another pair of hands."
Spider sense: Used by Buffy in "I, Robot. You, Jane", Giles didn't got that "pop culture reference" (Buffy's term). For those of you like Giles, it's a way to say intuition, but refering to the superhero Spiderman's highly developed intution which told him danger was near (but not giving any detail on the coming danger).
Spike: This charming 200 years old (approximately) vampire likes to torture his victims before killing them. Angel is his Sire. Because of his psychotic nature he was before known as "William the Bloody". A later habit of torturing his victims with railroads spikes explain the change in nickname. Except this little default, he is a modern vampire (and is really popular in the show). I don't mean he hangs around with a cellular phone, but that tradition and rituals are here to serve his interests, not because he likes to perform them. He prefers having fun and partying --he went too Woodstock, see the def.--. He killed the anointed one (by solar exposition) because he was boring and gave too much orders. Spike is in deep love with drusilla, a crazy vampire. She was weak, but Spike finally healed her (and almost killed Angel during the process). Spike also killed 2 slayers during this century. Note: So far he and drusilla are out of town. Except for the momentary come back of Spike in Sunnydale, after Dru dropped him ("Lovers Walk").
Spirit Guides: According to Giles some entities who live out of time, but have a knowledge of the future. He tried to contact them in "The Zeppo", to know how the Sisters of Jhe will open the Hellmouth, and eventually what could be done about that.
The Restfield Cemetery. Giles is standing before a large mausoleum and holding up a lit candle. The Spirit Guides appear in the form of a bright cloud gathering in front of the mausoleum, and Giles speaks to them.
Giles: "Noli me renuere, umbra ducens. Sapienta manium super me effundatur. [Translation: Do not deny me, Spirit Guide. Let the wisdom of those who have passed be showered upon me.]
Spirit Guides: Illae res occultae sunt tempoti et locis obscuris. Enuntiare illas Chaos super orbem vivum terrarum ferat. [Translation: These secrets belong to time and the dark regions. To reveal them would bring Chaos down upon the living Earth.]
Giles: Belua propulsanda est! Invenire vitium suum noster spes sola est! [Translation: The Beast must be fought! Our only hope lies in finding its weakness! A strong wind begins to blow.]
Spirit Guides: (angrily) Noli petere! Perturba nos non diutius! [Translation: (angrily) Seek not! Disturb us no longer!]"
The cloud moves away and up into the sky. The wind stops blowing. The cloud splits in two, and both halves disappear up into the firmament. ("The Zeppo", AleXander's Transcripts)
Spirit of Uurthu: See "Uurthu the Restless".
Spordelia: Used by Buffy in "Helpless". It was supposed to be (jokingly) an anymous comparison between the non-Slayer-Buffy and a so called Spordelia (do I need to tell who we are speaking of?). Buffy was pointing out how vain she used to be when she was in Hemery.
Buffy: "Before I was the Slayer, I was... Well, I, I don't wanna say 'shallow', but... Let's say a certain person, who will remain nameless, we'll just call her 'Spordelia', looked like a classical philosopher next to me. (...)" ("Helpless")
Spring Fling: It's the end of the year dance of Sunnydale high (= prom = homecoming). The 1997 one saw the liberation and destruction of the master (he didn't perturbate the dance in itself, but just trashed Buffy's dress and the library). Same Prom that Xander, was rejected by Buffy (and that she died). They know how to party in Sunnydale....
Stadeel (Owen): See "Owen Stadeel".
Stanley Backer (Doctor): See "Backer (Dr. Stanley Backer)".
Stanley (Jim): See "Jim Stanley".
Stealth Guy: Angel, according to an expression from Buffy. For those of you who can't figure it out, this name is due to his habitude of popping out of nowhere without making a noise. Used in "What's my line, Part. 1".
Stein (Detective): This is the police officer who had to find out if Teb Buchanan's death (caused by Buffy) was accidental (she pushed him and he felt down the stairs) or if she wanted to murder him. He actually investigated at school, hearing teachers (and Giles). He later investigated the murder of Allan Finch (questioning Buffy and Faith).
Stephan Korshak: Some man turned into a vampire that Buffy was waiting for him to arise from his grave ("Some Assembly Required"). Since she was arguing with Angel he had time to throw couple punchs, but nothing much. He was ashed pretty fast.
Stink Guy (The): Angel! Expression used by Whistler in 1996 (but related only in "Becoming, Part 1"), when he met the tramp-Angel in a Manhattan dark street.
Angel: "I just wanna be left alone.
Whistler: Well, yeah, you've been left alone for, what, ninety years already. And what a package you are. The Stink Guy!"
Stooges: Self-targetting expression used by Xander to name the trio. I was first used to underline how bad Cordelia's "Three Mustketers" (See def.) quote was. I was used again a minute later by Buffy ("I would have go with Stooges also.") to point out to Xander that his remark wasn't bright either. Used in the episode "When She Was Bad". For those who didn't get what it is about, it refers to an American shows from the 1950s where 3 comedians (Curly, Larry and Moe) where doing silly stuff all the time (and using the "good" old frying pans, water buckets and other cream cakes jokes...).
Strauss, Hans and Greta: Respectively 8 and 6, these 2 kids' bodies were found in 1649 in Germay near to the Black Forest by a priest. Either this was an actual murder (which is possible since the priest knew their names) or the first (reccorded) apparition of the demon, both positions can be defended (I'd go for the demon all the way). What is sure is that after this date it is the demon that used their appearances to shock the local population (with the witchcraft symbols and the murders) and create chaos and destruction in a peaceful town (people look for the authors of the murder and end up killing innocent people). It happened every 50 years (In 1899 in Utah and in Omaha in 1949, notably), each time the demon would push the crowd to commit deadly crimes. According to Giles (himself citing a theory) real facts can be the base of tales (here the murder would have started the Hansel and Gretel tale, with the witch and the gingerbread house). The sad reality is that these 2 kids ain't 2 kids but one hell of a nasty demon who must have some hypnotic power too (the crowds usually are not very bright but in the show people are under the control of his charism). Buffy (accidently) killed the demon.
Giles raises the bottle with his potion high and recites an incantation.
Giles: "Ihr Goetter, ruft Euch an! Verbergt Euch nicht hinter falschen Gesichtern!
[Translation: You gods, I call upon you! Do not hide behind false faces! ]
He throws the bottle to the floor, smashing it in front of the children. The potion begins to steam around them. Hansel and Gretel look at each other and embrace. A moment later the two children morph into a single demon standing over seven feet (215cm) tall. Its ears are pointed and huge fangs jut from its lower jaw. Its skin is red and mottled and its hair is long and tangled. ("Gingerbread", AleXander's Transcripts)
Sun Cinema: This is a movie theather in Sunnydale.
Sugar Daddy: Expression used by Faith to tease the mayor (as if he was an old man asking favors from a young girl in exchange of a comfortable appartement and so).
Faith: "Thanks, Sugar Daddy.
Mayor: Now, Faith, I don't find that sort of thing amusing. I'm a family man." ("Dopplegängland")
Sunk Church: Also known as the Master's lair, this church lays below one of Sunnydales' cemeteries. It is a legend for most people who heard about it. But it is a reality for the vampires and the gang. This underground church is the result of the 1937 earthquake in California. Since the Master was casting a portal spell, screwed up by the quake, it is a magical jail to him. His minions are free to come and go.
Sunnydale: Sunnydale is the town where all the Buffy action is taking place. Not only in California, around Los Angeles, Sunnydale is right on the Hellmouth. So it attracts a lot of phsycos, monsters and demons. Charming place to live (not long, according to the local death rate). Hopefully, the Slayer is in town. [Note: Sunnydale is a not a real city].
Sunnydale Funeral Home: Another intersting place to visit at night. Not all the bodies there are dead.....watch out for arising undeads!
Sunnydale High Sentinel: The school newspaper. In 1999 (and maybe before) the editorials were written by Freddy Iversen. It seems to be a pretty free-speech newspaper (interesting since Snyder isn't famous for letting students express themselves freely...).
Sunnydale Museum of Natural History: One of the conservator from this museum is Doug Perren. He and his team were anylizing in their labs a finding made by construction workers. What appeared to be an obelsik was in reality the tomb in which Alcathla was buried. Angelus and his side kicks came to steal it (the unlucky Dr. Perren was in their way)...
Sunnyhell: Spike's version of the Californian dream.... He used this expression in "Halloween".
Spike (to Drusilla): "(...) Once I know her [Buffy] I can kill her. And once I kill her you can have your run of Sunnyhell. Get strong again."
Sunnyhell Farm: A variation from the expression just beyond. He combined this expression with the "Rebecca" nickname, which refers to some element of American culture I don't know of...
Spike: "Oh! Right. Right, you almost got me! Aren't you a 'throw himself to the lions' sort of sap these days. Well, the lions are on to you, baby. See, if I kill you now you go quick, and Dru hasn't got a chance. And if Dru dies your little Rebecca of Sunnyhell Farm and all her mates are spared her coming-out party." ("What's My Line, Part 2")
Sunset Club: Weird private club in Sunnydale. This is where the vampires-fanatics used to meet. Using a former bombshelter as a local, there are some TVs playing some famous vampires movies, the stereo plays some gothic and doom music and everybody is kinda dress up like vampires. Actually the club is only part of a plan to trap Buffy, and was only leased for couple months.
Chantarelle: "You guys are newbies. I can tell.
Willow: Oh, no. We come here all the time.
Chantarelle: Don't be ashamed! It's cool that you're open to it. We welcome anyone who's interested in the Lonely Ones.
Willow: The Lonely Ones?
Angel: Vampires.
Xander: Oh! We usually call them the nasty, pointy, bitey ones.
Chantarelle: So many people have that misconception. But they who walk with the night are not interested in harming anyone. They are creatures above us. Exalted!" ("Lie To Me")
Sunshine: Name given, by Drusilla, to a female puppy she brought back to Spike (in his wheel chair), for his dinner in "Passion".
Drusilla: "I brought something for you. Poor thing. She's an orphan. Her owner died... without a fight. Do you like her? Hmm? I brought her especially for you... to cheer you up. And I've named her... 'Sunshine'! Open wide. Come on, love. You need to eat something to keep your strength up. Now, rrrrr, open up for mummy."
Sutcliff (Thomas): See "Thomas Sutcliff".
Sven: Poor guy !!! This guy came all the way from Sweeden as an exchange student to Sunnydale, California, just to arrive in Cordelia's house. Although she first though he was gorgeous ("100% gorgeous"), she kind of slowed down whhen she realised he would never act as her personnal slave for 2 weeks. You can't trust a Sweedish guy...
Sven (to Dawn): "I thought this exchange student thing would be a great deal. But look what I got stuck with! 'Momento!' 'Punchy fruity drinky!' Is Cordelia even from this country?" ("Inca Mummy Girl")
Sweatydale: Cordy's view of Sunnydale during Christmas (in "Amends"). She said that talking about the Christmas of 1998, where the temperature was about 77-79 Degrees Farenheit (=25-26 Celcius Degrees). Cordy was going to Aspen (Colorado) for skiing. Note that it was an attack toward the Gang, since she had just broke up with Xander.
Cordelia: "It must be a drag to be stuck here in Sweatydale, but I'm thinking of you. Okay, I'm done."
Swim Team: In Spring 1998, this Sunnydale high team become the school's biggest hope. Indeed, after winning several meetings and then the state semi-finals, they could permit to Sunnydale to win its first state championship in 15 years. The swimmers then became some sorts of gods (Snyder making sure they were concentrated on their competition ; like by forcing Willow to make Gage pass her class). With such a tretament the swimmers changed. Changed even so much that some of them turned in to sea monsters. The coach Marin who wanted them to win very bad added to the steam bath a mixture of steroids and Fish DNA. Thus Dodd McAlvy, Cameron Walker, Gage Petronzi and Sean all turned into... Note that Xander did join the team later (to be undercover); Jonathon never made it in the team though.
Willow: "So, Jonathon. (crosses her arms) You tried out for the swim team twice and never made it?
Jonathon: (fidgets) I'm asthmatic. I couldn't keep up.
Willow: You resented it, didn't you?
Jonathon: Maybe.
Willow: (approaches him) You hated being pushed around by Dodd and the others.
Jonathon: So? Willow: (walks around to his other side) So, you wanted revenge. Didn't you? (leans in suddenly) (sternly) Didn't you?!
Jonathon: (nervously) Yeah! Okay? I did!
Willow: (smiles and straightens back up) So... You delved into the black arts and conjured up a hellbeast from the ocean's depths to wreak your vengeance.
Jonathon: Huh?
Willow: Didn't you?
Jonathon: (confused) What? No! I snuck in yesterday and... peed in the pool.
Willow: (disappointed) Oh. (disgusted) Eww!"
He looks down in shame. ("Go Fish", AleXander's Transcripts)
Swim Teamliness: Expression (of jealousy) from Xander concerning the treatment the swim team had before the final of the state championship. It's true they have been acting a lot like monarchs...
Xander: "Too much research. Need beverage.
He walks through the doors to the lounge area and is practically run over by Cameron coming down the other hall at a fast pace, knocking Xander's change onto the floor.
Cameron: Hey! Watch it.
Xander: Oh, forgive me, your Swim Teamliness." ("Go Fish", AleXander's Transcripts)
Sycamore Street: One of the street of Sunnydale. A residencial street probably since it was evocated by Joyce in "Gingerbread" during the MOO campaign. The MOO was calling all inhabitants to push them to react.
T
Tabor: See "Lou Tabor".
Tackle: A frat guy from Delta Zeta Kappa. Was roaming totally trashed during the party. ("Reptile Boy"). Side kick of "Linebacker". 2 football players (which explain the nicknames and how soon they were drunk). Xander will come back after the party (to rescue Buffy with Angel, Giles and Willow) and punch him until he feels he got his revenge (which means a lot ).
Taggart (Mrs.): A chemestry teacher at Sunnydale high. She had Willow, Xander and Buffyin her class.
Talent show: An annual show in the Sunnydale High's auditorium. Students are presenting diverse acts. Basically it sucks: most of them have no talent. Giles was directing it (against his will) the year Sid was in the show. I don't know why you would come to see that stuff: imagine Cordelia.......singing (kinda). The gang was also supposed to perform a Tragedy, volunteering for that with the help of the principal Snyder.
Team: Xander wanted to clarify what is a team for all the Buffy fans. Note that it might sound strange to see a Californian guy rooting for a New York baseball team (but on the other end he likes the best team around. Yankees rule!).
Xander: "Team? Swim team. Hardly what I'd call a team. The Yankees. Abbott and Costello. The 'A'. Now, those were teams." ("Go Fish")
Technopagan: A person interested in both the cyber-space and computers & traditional myths and lore. It's a strange combination of cyber-culture and magical & surnatural powers. Jenny Calendar used the term as a self-description.
Tector Gorch: See "Gorch (Lyle & Tector).
Ted Buchanan: He was a salesman (salesman of the year) for a software company. He met Joyce when he came to change her system at the gallery. They had been seeing each others for a while when Buffy (coming back early one night) found them making out in the kitchen. Buffy never liked him, whearas others (among which Willow and Xander) found hm really nice. Later he got into a fight with Bufyy and felt down the stairs. Everybody thought him dead, and police suspectzed Buffy. To help her out the gang did their own investigation and found out that he used dematorin in his cookies (to get people all nice when he was here) and also that he got married 4 times (and the first time in 1957), no divorce papers could be found. They also found a hidden appartement below his workshop (decorated in the Fifties style), where Xander saw what remained from the 4 previous wives... Later as Ted "came back to life", we learnt while he fought Buffy that he was a robot. In the fifties, Ted Buchanan was a dying man whose wife left him. He built that robot to bring her back. But when she died the robot just went out to find a wife and keep her with him... That what was going to happen to Joyce. Buffy broke him into small pieces (and Willow actually kept some parts to study them).
Ted Chervin: A Sunnydale student in the "Bizarro Land". According to Harmony he "totally went third with Ginger in front of everybody" (what ever that means...).
Telekinesis: Telekinesis is the power of a man or creature, to move objects without contact, and from a certain distance, by the only mental concentration or will.
Telepathy: Another mind-power. This one enable the person/creature who has it to read other people's thoughs. Buffy had this power for a while in "Earshot". Apparently vampires' thoughts can't be read. But nothing says if a vampire with telepathic powers can read only vampires' minds, or everybody, nor if some creature can read their minds...
Angel: "It's like the mirror. The thoughts are there, but they create no reflection in you."
The Jumper: See "Hogan Martin".
Thelonius: An Italian priest who help by monks, forming the circle of Kayless, trapped Moloch in a book. He hoped nobody will ever read the manuscript and free the demon. From 1418, until Willow scanned the book and released him on the internet, the demon was effectively stuck in the book.
Theodore of Wolsham (Father): This religious man, is probalbly one of the rare one to have produced a picture of the Glove of Myhnegon. It was a wood engraving, but he didn't do it with the actual glove being in front of him. Giles found the picture in one of his book.
Gwendolyn: "Based, I believe, on very sketchy and unreliable folk legends. The pictures are fun to look at, Mr. Giles, but one really ought to read the nice words as well." ("Revelations")
Theresa (Klusmeyer): A Sunnydale high student. She is pretty and if she had to be with Larry in the gym class for self-defense exercises, hopefully Buffy was there to keep him (relatively) quiet (in "Phases"). Angel(us) walked her back one night. No need to say she ended up dead... or more exactly undead (present from Angelus to Buffy). Buffy ashed her.
Radio: "Police say that the incident was apparently connected to the animal mutilation which occurred two nights ago. The coroner's office has identified the body as that of Sunnydale High School student Theresa Klusmeyer, age seventeen. The authorities ask that anyone with further information."
Thesulan Orb: See "Orb of Thesulah".
Thirty Second: Ford loved to much movies and it could have costed him his life... Spike is not known for his patience...
Ford: "That doesn't matter. I've got something to offer you. I-I'm pretty sure this is the part where you take out a watch and say I've got thirty seconds to convince you not to kill me? (smiles) It's traditional.
Spike: Well, (slams the book and strides to Ford) I don't go much for tradition.
He grabs Ford by the ear and lifts him.
Drusilla: Wait, love.
Ford is in obvious pain, but doesn't scream. Drusilla puts her hand on Spikes's shoulder, and he lets go.
Spike: Well?
Ford: Oh, c'mon! Say it! It's no fun if you don't say it.
Spike: What? Oh. (rolls his eyes and bobs his head) You've got thirty seconds to convince me not to kill you."
("Lie To Me", AleXander's Transcripts)
Thomas: He was among the original group of Vampire that brough back the master and tried to free him. He almost got Willow, but he was a young vampire his inexperience costed him his non-life...
Thomas Sutcliff: One of the bearers of the Mark of Eyghon in London. He was killed by the demon.
Three (The): This is a group warrior vampires, which acts like hitmen. They are strong and well-trained in traditional weapons. When they fail a mission (it never happened before) they give their life to the vampire who asked them to do it. The Master sent them after Buffy they failed (thanks to Angel's help). They died...
Vampire: "We failed in our duty, and now our lives belong to you.
He hands the Master a spear. The Master passes it to Darla. She starts to walk around behind the Three as the Master goes over to Collin.
Master: Pay attention, child. You are the Anointed, and there is much you must learn. (crouches beside him) With power comes responsibility. True, they did fail, but also true, we who walk at night share a common bond. The taking of a life -- I'm not talking about humans, of course -- is a serious matter.
One of the Three raises his head in hope.
Collin: So you would spare them?
Master: Hmm. (gets up) I am weary, and their deaths will bring me little joy."
("Angel", AleXander's Transcripts)
Three Musketers: Attempt at being an insult or wannabee humorous cultural refrence, we will never know. Anyway this expression by Cordelia falled flat. Xander even suggested she should have gone with "Stooges" (See def.).
Personal note: anyway that was a very bad quote since the Three Mustekers (a novel written by Alexandre Dumas) were 4 anyway (Athos, Porthos, Aramis & Dartagnan)... Used in "When She Was Bad".
Tiberius Manifesto: The Tiberius Manifesto is one of the most important books dealing with prophecies concerning the Slayers. It said to be lost (to Giles discontentement). Same type of manuscript than the Codex.
Tina: Little girl that was killed by "der Kindestod" in the Sunnydale hospital when Buffy was there ("Killed By Death").
Tishler (Ms): She is a Sunnydale teacher. She teaches a communication class. Note that her "midnigth blue angora" tight sweater has a powerful effect on Xander. It's during one of her class the incident with Wendell happened.
Tom: One of the players in the sunnydale high basketball team.
Tom Warner: A Delta Zeta Kappa members (as his father and grand-father were before him). Fraternity brother of Richard. He is nice and sweet looking and pretty smart. He was also a Senior at Crestwood college (History major) when he met Buffy. He convinced her to come to there party. But he aint as sweet as he seems (All that glitter isnt gold ). And anyway I always said Warner was evil (excuse me if Im sliding away from the topic but there are stuff I hardly forgive ).
Tor: Sunnydale high student and member of Kyle's group. Was a member of the pack (see def.). Spelling Note: He has nothing to do with "Thor" the Scandinavian god.
Trans-possession: It is the transfer or a creture's spirit into another creature. Contrary to the traditional possession, there is some kind of exchange. In "The Pack", the pack is victim of trans-possession, but it can be a voluntary action (like primals do).
Trauma 1: One of the operation rooms of the Sunnydale hospital. This is where the Dr. Wilkinson healed Buffy just after she arrived in the emmergency room.
Travers: See "Quentin Travers".
Trick: He is (for me) the most modern vampire that appeared so far on the show. Even Spike can't pretend to this level of modernity (Spike doesn't enjoy reading the comic strip 'Marmaduke' in the newspaper, does he?). He has not only accepted, but totally integrated the computers and telecommunication to his way of life (not like Angel who go ask Willow when he needs an info). That's why he let his Sire (Kakistos) fight alone (and thus die) Buffy and Faith, because he found him too archaic to be part of this world. He organized by himself the Slayer Fest '99, and then joined the mayor Wilkins' team (well he was pretty much forced to). He was in a going to Buffy when Faith ashed him (in the back) in "Consequences".
True Believers: People from the Sunset Club, who actually believe taht vampires exist, and that they are our masters. They want to become vampires themselves. Diego and Chanterelle are some of them. But they are actually being manipulated by Billy Fordham.
Tunnels: There is a complex network of tunnels (electrical tunnels, many natural caves, and 14 million square miles of sewers... (=22,4 millions of square Km)) under Sunnydale. It was vey often where the Vampires were when the Master was still alive. The tunnels are connected to the Sunk Church, which was his lair. There are still used, but mostly to move around during the day light. For example Willy's bar can be accessed by through the tunnels. Not much vampires lives there now, for it pretty much stinks. deserted buildinds are preferred.
Tweed-suit: If spandex is Cordy's trademark, Tweed-suit is Giles'. I don't recall seeing him in something else (except for that Chocolate-Crazyness-Night....).
Giles: Well, I, I... Uh, how will I know what to wear?
Jenny: (looks at his tweed suit) Do you own anything else?
Giles: Uh, w-well, not as such, no, um... ("Lie To Me", AleXander's Transcripts)
Buffy: "Are you kidding? His diapers were tweed." ("Dark Age")
Giles (to Jenny after she shot him a crossbolt in the butt): "No, no, really, I, uh, I don't think it went in too deep. The... advantages of layers of tweed. Better than kevlar." ("Ted")
Tyler: He was Buffy's boyfriend for a (short) while when she was still in LA at Hemery high.
Buffy's friend: "Is Tyler taking you?
Buffy: Where were you when I got over Tyler? He's of the past. Tyler would have to crawl on his hands and knees to get me to go to the dance with him. Which, actually, he's supposed to do after practice, so I'm gonna wait." ("Becoming, Part 1")
U
Ugly Man: The Ugly Man is a big humanoid monster, which is Billy's vision of the coach that beat him up in his nightmare. Projected into reality he's as strong as he inspires fear to Billy. So he's almost undestructible. His right arm is oversized and has the form of a club. He beat up Laura with it, and gave Buffy a hard time. Buffy in this nigtmare world, and as a vampire, she beat him up and once Billy face his fear, the monster disappeared and Billy woke up.
Uncle Ken: See "Jordy".
Uncle Roar: See "Roary".
Undead-American: Expression used by Buffy ("When She Was Bad"), to mock Angel (She hadn't gone over her death yet).
"Because I don't trust you. You're a vampire. (gets a look) Oh, I'm sorry, was that an offensive term? Should I say 'undead American'?" (AleXander Transcripts)
Undead liar guy: Expression used by Xander when he thought Angel had been acting when saying he was tortured for having his soul back. (Angel had just said to Spike that he had been acting has if he had is soul back, so Buffy would trust him. In reality he was trying to gain Spike's confidence by playing the bad vampire. Xander who was held by Angel, thought Angel had really been lying to the gang and said that expression. Spike did not believe Angel so his plan did work that well. It happenned when Angel and Xander came to rescue Buffy during the Parents-Teachers night attack in "School Hard").
Uurthu the Restless: Since that guy is called upon to raise deads, and is called "the Restless" I'd say it's pretty safe to believe he is a demon undead/zombie entity. Here is the raising ritual as made by Jack O'Toole, it's adaptzed from AleXander's Transcripts of "The Zeppo".
Jack speaks a spell and dangles a chicken foot on a string over a grave.
Jack: "He calls forth the Spirit of Uurthu, the restless. No one shall speak. (raises his arms) He shall arise! Hear me... The blood of the Earth shall restore him...
He puts away the chicken foot and kneels by the grave. He drawn his knife across the palm of his hand, turns his hand over and lets his blood drip onto the grave. And he shall arise. Something under the ground begins to move.
Shall arise!"
V
Valentine's Day Dance: It took place at the Bronze (in 1998, in "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered"). Dingoes Ate My Baby were on stage. That's where Xander got dropped by Cordelia, leading him to ask Amy to cast a spell on Cordelia.
Vampire: It is a type of demon who lives at night. Vampires are also called Lonely Ones or Solitaires. According to the scriptures (the dark scriptures, not the Bible), Earth used to be populated with demons. The last demon to leave ate from a human being. The victim infected by his demonic essence was the first vampire (the Master). Still now the mixing of both blood is essential to create a vampire. It needs blood to survive (human preferred). After it's human death, the demon resurrect in this new form. Actually to be precise, a vampire is a dead body containing a demon (which makes trans-possession impossible on a vampire, since it will cause a fight between the 2 demons within the same body. I don't know what happen if a vampire's demon is killed by another demon who possed him...). Only some selected individuals are transformed, and they lose their souls in the process. To become a vampire, one must have his blood sucked by a vampire, and then suck the blood of his "Sire". They can keep their past human face (that doesn't get old, but keep the marks of injuries), especially when among humans. The demoniac version (the 'game face'), with fangs, is used when fighting or drinking blood (directly from a prey). Great fear or anger can make them change their face. As human they seem very white (...except if Black or Asian) and their body is cold. Metal can't hurt them. They can be killed by solar light (opposite of their dark origin), holy water in great quantity or indigested (same reason), to be beheaded, a stake in the chest or fire. Holy water and the contact of a (Christian) cross causes burning and fear. When in a tribe, they obey the oldest or strongest one(s). Special note: according to Buffy's experience a vampire can be beheaded using and exact-O knife, a drum cybal works too. By the way they have no reflection in a mirror. Note on vampires and "active substances": Thanks to Spike we learn the effects of drug and alcohol on our night-crawlers. Alcohol is just like on humans, getting wasted and a good old hang-over. Drug is weirder (if the vampire drank blood for a highly druged person): it produces uncontrolled physical reactions (see "Woodstock"). Also vampires' thoughts can't be read using telepathic powers.
Spike: "We like to talk big. Vampires do. 'I'm going to destroy the world.' That's just tough guy talk. Strutting around with your friends over a pint of blood. The truth is, I like this world. You've got... dog racing, Manchester United. And you've got people. Billions of people walking around like Happy Meals with legs. It's all right here. But then someone comes along with a vision. With a real... passion for destruction. Angel could pull it off. Goodbye, Picadilly. Farewell, Leicester Bloody Square. You know what I'm saying?" ("Becomingf, Part 2")
Vampire bat: Xander's attempt to explain the lone bat in "Out of Mind, Out of Sight". Even if it was not a popular proposition among the gang, I thought it merited to be in the reccords... (I the show vampires can't transform into a bat).
Vampire Meals-On-Wheels: Expression used by Buffy in "Dark Age".
Giles: "Um, a medical transport is delivering the monthly supply of blood to the hospital.
Buffy: Mm. Vampire Meals-On-Wheels."
Van Hauptman: Probably a well known family in Sunnydale (historically or still alive?), since Xander knew that the family crypt was in Restfield cemetery. Definitly an European name, they must have immigrated from Germany, Netherlands or Belgium. The Glove of Myhnegon was hidden in their crypt, until Angel took it.
Vessel: The "Vessel" is the result of a ritual during the Harvest. During that period the Vampire's blood is one with the blood of the Master. Thus all the blood collected by the Vessel is received by the Master. He can recover his energy without leaving his lair (he is stuck anyway). Luke was the last Vessel to be used. The Vessel must drink from the Master's wrist, and them have the Master draw a 3 pointed star on his forehead to complete the ritual (see "Harvest" for the exact details of the ritual).
Vincent: A Vampire who led the Eliminati. He failed in his task to get Balthazar's amulet back (Buffy got it from his belt). Since he failed he offered his life by doing a suicide mission against the mayor Wilkins. He hide in his office and waited for Wilkins to open his closet doors. He could have succeeded if Trick was there (and has Trick pointed out, if he had used Uzis instead of a sword). He was spare (for a while), later the mayor who wanted to test his invincibilty made Vincent thrust at him with his sword. Vincent didn't had much time to be astonished (the mayor didn't died), he was staked in the back by Trick.
Volunteer Safety Program: A program on the Halloween night where high school kids are responsible of a little group of kids to go trick-o-tricking with them (for 4pm to 6pm, I just precise in case you want to enroll). Since Snyder was managing the program in 1998, I can tell you he applied his own concept to the word "volunteering". The gang got trapped.... (it reminds me of the Talent show...). And to complete the toture costumes are mandatory.
W
Walker: See "Cameron Walker".
Watchers: Mysterious specie that comes from England. Specialists agree on the fact that they would probably die if separated too long from a library/book or from a cup of tea. They all gather once a year to exchange news (and certainly to drink tea) in England. The watcher normally note all they can on vampires and other demons. When they can, they try to impeach evil deeds. A watcher that is responsible of the Slayer must train and guide her. Keeping her alive, is generally well seen by the hierarchy (The Council).
Watchers Diaries: A collection of several books in which Watchers who guide Slayer reccord(ed) their observations on certain surnatural events, artifacts or demons. For exemple noticable vampires (such as Angelus) are reccorded in it, and some additional notes (other than what can be found in more classical books) on them are compiled by the watchers. That by reading one of Giles' Watchers diaries that Buffy got the idea to dress up in a 18th century noble woman on Halloween nigth to seduct Angel. Giles wrote a diary too while he was Buffy's Watcher.
Giles: (...)" I've been, uh, indexing the Watcher diaries covering the last couple of centuries. You would be amazed at how numbingly pompous and long-winded some of these Watchers were.
Buffy: Color me stunned" ("What's My Line, Part 1")
Watcher's Pet: This is Buffy according to Xander. He implies that she his Giles' favorite in the gang. First used in "Passion".
Xander: "Hey, how come Buffy doesn't get a snotty 'once again you boil it down to the simplest form' thing? Watcher's pet."
Warner: See Tom Warner.
Weatherly Park: Park in Sunnydale. Numerous homeless people live here at night. So bad foes roam here too. It's a pretty dangerous place at night.
We Hate Cordelia Club: Few information is available. Willow and Xander (treasurer) founded it. Was there numerous members ? What types of actions did they set up? It's a mystery.
Xander: "I know it's weird...
Willow: Weird? It's against all laws of God and Man! It's (disgusted) Cordelia! Remember? The, the 'We Hate Cordelia' club, of which you are the treasurer." ("Innocence")
Weinberg (Cody): A Sunnydale hign student. Probably a rich boy since he drives a Mercedes Benz 350 SL (a convertible based on serie 107 chassis with a 4.5 liters V8 engine -the US version; 3.5 liters in Europe-, of 1972 -in the US; 1971 in Europe-. A collector's piece especially since the 350 SL model in the US ended in 1973 to be renamed 450 SL). But even more surely because Cordy's group finds him really cool (that's a good way to measure the size of your bank account).
Cordelia: "Cody Weinberg? The one with the 350 SL?
Harmony: The very one. Said he's thinking of asking me to the pledge dance on Thursday.
Cordelia: That's so huge! Harmony: Yeah, there's just two other girls he's gonna ask first, and if they refuse, then I'll..." ("Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered")
Wendell: Sunnydale high student. Other than for standing in Cordelia's light, he is known for being covered by crawling Tarantulas that came out of his book, has he was supposed to read a work by Isaacson (p. 78), in the chapter 5 (about active listening). He had the best collection of Tarantulas in the Tri-county area, that was destroyed while he was in a wilderness camp. His brother had left the heat lamps turned on for weeks. The scene that happened was a projection in reality of the nightmare he had ever since. (see "Billy")
Wendy: Sunnydale student. Ex-girlfriend of Mitch.
Werewolf: The werewolf is a form of lycantropy. The victim of the curse sees his/her body transform into another form. The werewolf is a state in-between the human form and the wolf. The resulting creature is totally ruled by its primitive feelings and instincs. The sweetest person loses all consciousness. The victim don't remember his night-walks but can only guess by waking-up naked in the woods, sometimes next to the carcass of an annimal (if you are lucky...sometimes it's worse). The transformation happens at dusk 3 nights a month: the full moon and the 2 surrounding nights. The gang has its own werewolf: Oz.
Giles: "Yes, I must admit I, I am intrigued. Werewolves, it's... it's one of the classics. (start away) I, I'm sure my books and I are in for a fascinating afternoon." ("Phases")
Giles: "And, uh, while there's absolutely no scientific explanation for lunar effect on the human psyche, uh, the phases of the moon, uh, do seem to exert a great deal of psychological influence. And th-the full moon is, is, seems to bring out our darkest qualities. Y-you see, uh, the-the werewolf, uh, is such a, a potent e-e-extreme representation of our inborn animalistic traits that it e-emerges for three full consecutive nights: the full moon and, uh, the two nights surrounding it. And it, uh, acts on-on pure instinct. No conscience, uh, uh, predatory and, and aggressive. The point is that our wolfman could also be a-a-a wolfwoman, or- or anyone who was bitten by a werewolf.
Xander: So then I'm guessing your standard silver bullets are in order here?
Giles: No. No bullets. No matter who this werewolf is, i-it's still a human being, who may be completely unaware of his or her condition."
("Phases", AleXander's Transcripts. Here I only kept the parts of the original dialogue relative to werewolves)
Wesley Wyndam-Pryce: Watcher supposed to become Buffy and Faith Watcher after Giles was dismissed by the council. He arrived in "Bad Girls". He has actually no power over Buffy, Faith, Giles nor the Gang... He is young, totally unexprerienced and sure he is a far better Watcher than Giles (which he quickly understood to not to be true). Nobody liked him (even if I think Giles could recognize himself younger in some attitudes), except Cordelia who found him very attractive...
West: See "Percy West".
Whedon: Also known as "Joss", this man is not in the show. He is the author/realisator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Buffy is not his only work, since he wrote the scenarios of Toy story and Alien IV. Spectators must be grateful that he doesn't screw up with the show, keeps the characters credible (so far...) and respects his fans. Actually, if you are lucky enough, you can talk with him in the post...it's up to you to figure out when he will show up (you might wanna buy a crystal ball...).
Whisper Lake: Jenny spoke about this lake in "Prophecy Girl". It's located in North Carolina. It's said it suddenly boiled (a family was there swimming), in Spring 1997. This is was one of the signs annoucing the coming liberation of the Master.
Whistler: This is a mysterious character. A bit like the one that Angel used to be at first. He is the demon who took Angel off the street (after he covered his soul he pretty much became a peice of trash), and made a 'good guy' out of him.
Whistler: "My name's Whistler. (...) Anyway, lately it is.
Angel: You're not a vampire.
Whistler: A demon... technically. I mean, I'm not a bad guy. Not all demons are dedicated to the destruction of all life." ("Becoming, Part 1)
Buffy: (...)"What are you? Just some immortal demon sent down to even the score between good and evil?
Whistler: Wow! Good guess." ("Becoming, Part 2")
White Hats: A group of humans (mostly students) led by Giles is trying to fight vampires in the "Bizarro Land". Without a Slayer they can't do much but they patrol in a van and try to save some people from vampires. They can hardly kill them so they mostly use crosses to keep them away. The know members of the White Hats are Larry (he ain't that bad after all), Nancy and Oz. Nancy died when Xander & Willow came in the library to kill Cordy (in front of Giles).
Whitmore (Mr.): Teacher of the 'Teen Health' class at Sunnydale high. He was controlled by a besoar and thus gave away besoar eggs to his students pretending they were normal eggs for a parent-simulation.
Wilkins (Mayor): The mayor of Sunnydale. Often did we heard that name, without seing his face nor knowing what he wanted. Once we met him ("Homecoming"), he only created more questioning among the fans. A mysterious man, who seemed nice - he liked the comic strip 'Family Circus' - (although a bit maniac about cleaningness and order), that was feared by all the people working for him (the chief of police, Snyder, Allan Finch,...). But we couldn't figure out what he was or wanted... Soon it appeared that he was the one pulling the strings in town. He knew about much of what was going on in town, and he took control of most of the demonic activities after Angel was sent to Hell. He has been in his town for decades (actually a century or so), and was the ennemy of Baltazar (he is the one who kicked the demon out of town about a century ago). All his thoughts were turned to the ascension (him becoming a demon), and he prepared that event carefully, step by step. We even learned that he worked from the start on developing Sunnydale, to make sure the demonic activity would be high (demon feeding on humans). He actually became invincible during the dedication ritual ("Bad Girls").
Mayor Wilkins: "I've made certain deals to get where I am today. This demon requires his tribute. (unlocks the cabinet) You see, that's what separates me from other politicians, Mr. Trick.
He opens the cabinet. The shelves are full of occult paraphernalia: skulls, a fetus preserved in a bottle, various urns and chests, a shrunken head, the bones of a forearm and hand, and various tools of the trade. Trick looks uneasily at all of it from his vantage point by the Mayor's desk.
Mayor Wilkins: I *keep* my campaign promises." ("Band Candy", AleXander's Transcript)
Wilkinson (Doctor): She is the doctor who took care of Buffy (in "Killed By Death") since she arrived in the emmergency room. She had lost consciousness after a fight withAngel, but mainly because of a bad flu.
Dr. Wilkinson: What do we have?
Intern: High-grade fever, possible fractures.
Dr. Wilkinson: Get her into Trauma 1, give her a CBC, Chem 7, type and screen. [Can anybody translate that to English ???]
Intern: Right.
William the Bloody: See "Spike".
Williams Barrett: See "Owen Stadeel".
Willow Rosenberg: 'Reserved' is one of the best adjective to describe her. The beginning of the 3rd season was slightly different, she took a lot of initiatives, but she is "normal" again (but she is way more open than she used to be before Buffy arrived). She is a true friend, intelligent and trustable (...most of the time: I know she screw up couple times, but she always felt bad about it. No Willow = Evil theory with me!). Willow is an "A" student and a science/computer nerd (she and admits it). Her computer capacities are very high (she had a job proposed in a large software corporation, and she took over Jenny Calendar's class), thus she hacks into some servers when the gang needs info. Except Xander and Moloch she had no declared love before Oz. Shy she had difficult relationships with boys, she spent most of her time with her best friends: Xander and Buffy. She is still with Oz, even if she went out with Xander (but that created a mess). She and Xander are best friends for a long time: they knew each other before they were 5 years old. Notable fears: arachnopobia (spiders). Oops, I almost forgot, Willow is Jewish (but you might have guessed with 'Rosenberg'), she seems to be follow her faith normally (I mean she isn't extremist and it isn't like she doesn't care either). Her parents (Ira and Sheila Rosenberg) are relatively strict (especially her father for religious matters), but apparently her mother is not often at home (she's working a lot) Willow also have couple fishes (the only pets allowed).
Willy (the Snitch): Need an info? Go ask Willy. His bar is like a giant ear. He sells everything you need, or know who you should ask to get it. He is often "friendly" questionned by either the gang (mostly) or vampires (less, they are more persuasive...). A new trend recently started up: external demons (not including in the Gang/vampires conflict) can also beat him up...
We first met him in "What's My Line, Part 1". It is in his bar that Kendra almost killed Angel.
Angel: "I need some information.
Willy: Yeah? Man, that's too bad, 'cause... I'm stayin' away from that whole scene. I'm livin' right, Angel.
Angel: Sure you are, Willy. And I'm taking up sunbathing." ("What's My Line, Part 1")
Willow: "She's checked every place she can think of. She even beat up Willy the snitch a couple of times. Angel's vanished." ("Innocence")
Winslow (Detective): Detective who was charge of solving the murder of Philip on campus. He had to hear Giles (the victim had papers mentioning Giles on him).
Winter Brunch: An event organized by the Sunnydale High, in the Bizarro Land. The advantage of having a brunch is that it happens during the day, thus no vampire can show up uninvited...
Wise One: If you're thinbking Giles, you're thinking wrong. Nope, this is Buffy we are talking about. It was used by Xander to ask Buffy how they (Willow and Xander) could go through their break-up with Oz and Cordy. Well with what she lived with Angel, Wise One is pretty true on this issue...
Buffy: "I know the feeling.
Xander: Right. I mean, you went through it with Angel, and you're still standing. So tell us, Wise One, how do you deal?" ("The Wish")
Witch: A Witch is (originally) a woman using witchcraft. Basically, it means that she as access to certain magic/demonic powers, through the use of rituals (magic formula, symbolic action, pictograms,...) and spell components (candles, frog eye, blood,...). In a lot of traditions they are evil, but I think a better classification would be accordingly to the magic they use: white (good), grey (neutral) or black (evil) [notice: I only use these terms to explain non-spoken concepts underlying the show]. In the show a witch can be human or non-human (demons, vampires...) and if witchcraft is very often seen as a woman practrice it can be used by men too (like Giles or Ethan,...). No special term design men, so you could use 'sorceer' if you really feel like doing so... 2 famous (and diameterally opposed) witches in the show are he good Willow and the evil/crazy Catherine Madison.
Giles: (...) "You'll need some of her hair, a little quicksilver and some aqua fortis.
Willow: Well, that's just mercury and nitric acid. You can get that in the science lab.
Giles: 'Heat ingredients and apply to witch, and if a spell has been cast in the previous 48 hours, witch's skin turns blue.' Hmm... Oh, and you'll need some Eye of Newt." ("The Witch")
Woodstock: This popular music festival held in Woodstack, New York, in 1969 is traditionally known to be part of the hippie movement and also for the large amount of drugs used during that particular festival. What people don't know usually is that some vampires actually went there too. Among them Spike:
"I was actually at Woodstock. That was a weird gig. I fed off a flowerperson, and I spent the next six hours watching my hand move." ("School Hard")
Wormy: Another affective nickname from Buffy to her beloved Machida ("Reptile Boy").
Wyndam-Pryce: See "Wesley Wyndam-Pryce".
X
Xander: Originally he was the fool/jester of the band, joking about everything and everybody (including himself). He seems to have couple family issues but rearely speaks of it (is father is out of job and couple relatives are a bit weird). Passionned by women, he is here also a fool...except the Dr. Natalie French (a giant praying mantis), Ampatta (an Inca mummy), and Cordy, no woman entered in his sentimental life. He asked out Buffy, but was rejected (he is a friend, not a boy friend). Jealous of any boy approaching Buffy or Willow, Angel is not his favorite mate and Oz was also suspect for a while. Finally he and Cordy went out, they were fine together,...but he kissed Willow (it was not the first time) but Oz and Cordy saw it: a bad move that ended his reation with Cordy. He still seems kind of jealous for Cordy too... Except this "accident" he is reliable and a true friend. Currently Xander is single. He lost his virginty in "The Zeppo" with Faith after he saved her life, who actually just used him (his eye twiched after that when you'd say Faith in front of him) His apparent cowardliness hides a great courage (he took several times lot of risks, esp. the night he reanimated Buffy in the Master 's lair after she drowned). Known interests (other than women): skateboard (not successfully), and CHOCOLATE. Dislike: clowns (since his 6th birthday), nazis. Class disinterests: math, chemestry. Also school in general, but it seems that season one began at a point where he began to realize he should work (some clues let us know he used to skip a lot of classes).
Known readings: "Witches: historic roots to modern practices", "The pagan rites" (for the semi-nudes engraving), and "Playboy" (for the articles I bet, hehe...). Note that he keeps the Plaboys in his school locker (he fears that they will be found at home?)
Xander: "I laugh in the face of danger. Then I hide until it goes away." ("The Witch")
Xander Jr.: Nickname that Xander gave to his egg (for the sensibilisation to parental responsibilty in the 'Teen Health' class taught by Mr. Whitmore). Note that Xander (who is a responsible father, boiled Xander Junior to be sure he won't break).
Willow: "You boiled your young?
Xander: Yeah! I know it sounds cruel, but sometimes you gotta be cruel to be kind! I mean, you can bet that little Xander here is thick skinned now." ("Bad Eggs")
Xena: Warrior-princess it's probably the worst television show trying to be mythological (along with Heracles -- both the stupid TV show and the horrible/lame/pityful cartoon-movie by Disney Studios). Anyway, Willow's wish on Halloween's night (in 1998, the one time when Ethan had a good joke going on), was that Buffy had costumed (and thus became) into the fighting Xena instead of a fainting 18th princess.
Willow: "She couldn't've dressed up like Xena?"
Y
Yoda: Spike qualifying Angelus (his mentor) as the most famous "Yedi master" in the Stars Wars trilogy (in "School Hard"). When I was telling you this guy was a modern vampire!!! May the force be with you young Spike...
Z
Zabuto (Sam): He is a Watcher. Kendra's Watcher to be precise. According to Giles, (who never met him) he is very respected among Watchers.
Zackary Kralik: What a weirdo! I'd say he's probably crazier than Drucilla... According to Giles before he became a vampire he killed a dozen women and was sent into an asylum. Hopefully he didn't told us what he did once he lost his soul. He was the vampire that Buffy was suppose to pass her cruciamentum test. She did but only because she went to rescue her mother kidnapped by Kralik. He had to take pills for his headaches (he must have some brain damages), and Buffy replace the ordinary water by holy water... bye bye Kralik.
Zackary (to Joyce): "May I call you Mother? My own mother was a person with no self-respect of her own, so she tried to take mine. Ten years old, she had the scissors. You wouldn't believe what she took with those. But she's dead to me now. Mostly because I killed and ate her, but also because I know I won't be alone much longer. I'll have your daughter. I won't kill her; I'll just make her like me. Different. She'll go to sleep, and when she wakes up, your face will be the first thing she eats. I have a problem with mothers. I'm aware of that." ("Helpless")
Zeppo (The): Xander according to Cordelia. An expression that gave its name to the episode. A zeppo being basically the total loser.
Cordelia: 'Integral part' of the group? Xander, you're the, the 'useless' part of the group. You're 'the Zeppo'. 'Cool.' Look it up. It's something that a sub-literate that's repeated twelfth grade three times has [Note: Jack O'Toole], and you don't."
Zookeeper: Responsible of the zoo, he happened to be fascinated by hyenas and try to get possessed by them. He is a member of the 'Primals' sect. He set up a trap, so he got the hyenas spirit in the members of the pack to transfer to himself. A fight followed and he ended-up in the hyena pit,....and eaten alive.
