THE COMING OF
Toni Braxton was born the oldest of five children in Severn, Md.. Under the influence of Her minister father, She spent much of Her childhood singing in the choir at his church. Among the many things that Her Apostolic faith prevented was listening to profane music and watching such television programs as Soul Train. However, brief exposures to such things in a combination with Her curiosity, Toni secretly pursued the forbidden music. Using every second She could get when Her parents, Michael and Evelyn Braxton, were away proved to be a great influence on Toni's singing style and Her skills as a pianist and a song writer. Then, just before adolescence, Her parents switched to a United Methodist church, opening up doors to things that had previously been taboo. Listening to secular music -- at a low volume -- became acceptable and only strengthened Her love for the music.

Schooling came to an end at Glen Burnie High School and soon after She was studying at Bowie State University to become a music teacher. She soon quit after stopping at an Annapolis gas station. There, She was caught singing to Herself by a striving songwriter, Bill Pettaway. He later helped Her make some contacts that landed Her and Her sisters in a group contract with Arista Records. Coming as no surprise to Toni, The Braxtons' first single, "The Good Life", bombed, but there were some very important people listening -- paying close attention to Toni.

Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and Antonio "L.A." Reid were just forming a new record label, LaFace Records, and saw great potential in Toni as a much needed female solo act. A couple of contracts and an album with numerous singles later, the world was seeing a lot in Toni. Soon after, the new religion, Braxtonism, blossomed. People everywhere praised Her talents and today, after a second smash album, more and more people are becoming Braxtonians.
