After a few months out of the spotlight, the Backstreet Boys are gearing up for the release of its sophomore album, the appropriately titled "Millennium," and have firmed up plans for a new single and a Disney-sponsored concert special. The Boys will issue a single for "I Want It That Way" on May 18, and the vocal quintet has just completed a video for the song, directed by Wayne Isham. A week before the song hits radio, the Backstreet Boys will travel to New York City to tape a performance at the New Amsterdam Theater -- the current home of Disney's Broadway production of "The Lion King" -- for a special hour-long special. The "Backstreet Boys in Concert" will then make its broadcast premiere on the Disney Channel on July 10 at 7:00 p.m. The Disney special comes in the wake of last month's successful pay-per-view special, which was taped at the group's 1998 homecoming show in Orlando, Florida (see "Backstreet Boys Coming To Pay-Per-View"). But if the small screen doesn't get you close enough to the Backstreet Boys, then you can catch the group live and in person this summer, when the Boys plan on launching an extensive world tour in support of "Millennium."

It is expected to air in early May. The single, due out on April 12 worldwide, will be the first cut released off "Millennium," the follow-up to the band's self-titled debut, which recently received the Diamond Award for U.S. sales of over 10 million units. At the Los Angeles premiere for the film "Never Been Kissed," the group's Kevin Richardson spoke to MTV News about what we can expect from the new album. "It's definitely the Backstreet Boys," he said. "We haven't gone hardcore alternative rock or anything. It's the Backstreet Boys sound, just more good music. Hopefully our fans are going to love it." [RealVideo] "Millennium" is expected to hit store shelves on May 18 and will be followed by a world tour. Dates and opening acts have yet to be announced. We'll keep you posted.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - The Backstreet Boys recruited some local talent to sing backup on the youthful heartthrobs' next album, ``Millennium.''
Brian Littrell, a member of the quintet and a 1994 graduate of Tates Creek High School, was home Monday to direct 45 local choral students for the song ``Perfect Fan.'' The tune was written for Littrell's mother, and he said using the choir - made up mostly of current or former Tates Creek students - was a gesture of appreciation toward choir teacher Barry Turner, who encouraged Littrell to try for a singing career. `I never really pictured myself to be a singer before that,'' he said. The Backstreet Boys' current self-titled album has been on Billboard's top album list for 77 weeks. Their hits include ``Quit Playing Games (With My Heart).''
