Beginning Dowsing. By Robert J. Lane
HOW I BEGAN. I have been a dowser now since 1978. I began by reading the paperback book Pendulum Power by Nielsen and Polansky. The beginning exercise was to hold the pendulum over first the left knee and then the right, and to see if there was a natural movement of the pendulum moving in any particular way.
DOWSING MOVEMENTS. Most people experience clockwise movement of rotation over the right knee, counter-clockwise over the left. You can also do the same exercise over the palm and back of your hand, which have opposite polarities. Palm is clockwise, back of hand counterclockwise.
BEGINNERS MISTAKES. Some beginners think they should just hold the pendulum, and wait for it to move of its own accord. For experienced dowsers, connected through many repetitions to that energy, pendulum movement is automatic and effortless. But at the beginning level, it helps to provide “neutral energy” to the pendulum swing.
DOWSING SWING. Swing it up and down a time or two, then wait to see if it is inclined to go clockwise or counterclockwise. Clockwise for most people is the positive or “yes” response, counter-clockwise the negative or “no” response. This is not a hard and fast rule. The direction of response is simply a signalling system, which varies from person to person. Some people find that a swing to the right or the left is more natural/convenient, rather than anything circular. For others, up and down or vertical is "yes," side to side is "no."
YES/NO ANSWERS JUST THE BEGINNING. The clockwise or counterclockwise response in dowsing is merely a beginning point of information. This is a simple yes/no answer to your questions. However, life itself is more complicated than just black/white, yes/no information. As you progress, you will likely discover that there are nuances and shades of degree between yes/no, black/white, etc.
PHRASING OF QUESTIONS. And you should phrase your questions for the pendulum having that awareness. Example: should I go to a party on such and such a date, or not? While the simple answer might seem to be simply yes/no, you either go or don’t go, the more accurate answer might be, say, 60% yes, 40% no. There are pluses and minuses on both sides.
DEGRESS OF EMPHASIS. My own subjective experience with dowsing is that there are degrees of emphasis in the yes/no response I get. The most common response is clockwise or counterclockwise. For others, it is up/down versus left/right; some experience the differentiation between yes and no as a 45 degree angle left or right. This may hasve something to do with each person's unique energy field.
EMPHATIC YES OR NO. For me, if the yes/no answer is more emphatic, a stronger “yes," then the response of my pendulum changes. Instead of being just a circular rotation, the movement becomes “jerky,” as if staying within that smooth and restrained movement was not sufficient to express how powerfully “yes” that answer was.HAND SHIFTS. And then for me there is a step beyond that, where my hand spontaneously shifts to a different position entirely. Normally, my hand is above the pendulum, holding the pendulum directly below it. But in the most emphatic “yes” response, it shifts to where the pendulum is out at the side of my hand, spinning powerfully at maximum velocity.
BASIC IDEA. The basic message here is that you should be prepared to be open to an unfolding of communication with the higher realms, as your experience with the pendulum progresses.INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCES. Your experience may differ. But suffice it to know that there are, or may be for you, steps in awareness beyond the simple yes/no of circular movement in pendulum communication with other dimensions. My own belief is that the pendulum is a way, not the only way, of connecting to the higher realms of knowing. With spirit guides, with the divine, with something beyond ourselves.
