The Erie Canal opened on October 26, 1825. Governer DeWitt Clinton and other dignitaries boarded the boat "Seneca Chief" in Buffalo. The rode the entire length of the Canal, then dumped a keg of Lake Erie water into the Atlantic ocean. This ceremony officialy opened the Erie Canal.
