It is so interesting to imagine Paul's meeting with Peter, James and John. The four of them, having been brought to Christ through different means, debating who should hear the message of the Christ crucified. These four figures loom large in the church's memory; yet they were just men who argued, discussed, agreed, disagreed, and loved each other as they hammered out their differences.
(Galatians, 2:1-12)
This reading from Mark, 6:1-6, is another favorite: "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?"...And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief." Ahh, poor Jesus, still only his mother's son at this stage of his ministry.
A favorite snippet of memory from our recent trip to St. John in the USVI: standing with the small congregation of St. Ursula's, holding hands and singing the "Our Father", with heart and mind and voices (and great gusto).
These are just a few thoughts early in the morning.
