Just say no to old, money-grubbing, hypocritical artists that have been warped by commercial success to the point that they try to deprive the general public of bootlegging opportunities that helped their own career soar into the Billboard charts.
I'll have you know, this has nothing to do with me thinking that people "sell out." I pray to the gods that one day I may "sell out" myself. When all you're good at is doing music, you really wish for it. My disagreement here goes beyond that level.
Dr. Dre once revolutionized the hip hop world with his group N.W.A., going against the restrictions of authority ("Fuck the Police", hello) and encouraging the youth to do what they do regardless of what others may think about it. Now, over a decade later, it seems that the politics of the industry have affected the man's brain. Now he's crying about "losing album sales" and trying to phase out certain technological advantages for those of us that can't (or won't) watch MTV's TRL everyday.
There are a lot of artists that I'm familiar with, but I'm not always sure if I want to buy their album or not. Free services like Napster made it easy for me to sample music and decide what I really like. I had downloaded the song "Forgot About Dre" and fell in love with it instantly. Dre & Em have a chemistry on that track that I could never deny- it's a great rap song. I thought to myself, 'Wow, this is cool. I should get this album.' Then something peculiar happened.
I tried to sign on to Napster one day (even after reading news articles about Dre & Lars taking them to court), and guess what came up on my monitor? *You have been banned from Napster by Dr. Dre #bla bla bla* Fucker! If I may quote one of my own songs: "I heard an MP3 & I was gonna buy the Chronic * But then I heard you whining & now I don't want it."
So, in conclusion, fuck Dr. Dre. I will never purchase anything that he is affiliated with again, and I will do my best to convince anyone with a sense of pride to do the same. I hope his career goes down into a flaming pit of shit, untill he's in the same category as MC Hammer.
