When first I crawled from the cool green
sea,
to walk upright and breathe
live-giving air;
I started my search for
you.
I lived through the floods,the
fires,the ice;
that threatened to destroy
me
and so end my search for you.
I
searched for you along the Nile
and in the
Valley of Kings;
at a time when the
pharohs ruled
and each man had value.
I
stood ankle deep in the Gobi Desert
and
had my burning skin stung
by whirling
sand
and my lips grew dry and cracked.
I
searched for you in the ports
of Greece,
where ouzo flowed
like the Mediterranian
Sea,
and fishing nets hung to dry
in
the noon day sun.
I searched for you in the
plains of Africa;
and watched in
wide-eyed wonder
as your brothers and
sisters
stalked the earth
and were
proclaimed kings.
I searched for you in
the snow-capped Rockies.
Where the cold
wind made a ballet
of aspen and birch; and
the rain
came down in crystalized
drops.
I searched for you on
the beaches
of Hawaii
where palm trees
swayed
making perfume from hibiscus
and
the rustle of grass skirts;
worn over warm
brown hips
made me lose track of time.
I
searched for you
in the opium dens of Hong
Kong,
where day and night
have no
meaning, and the colors
of skin blend
with
the ever present smoke.
I searched
for you through centuries
and was, at
times, distracted
by a face,a smile,a
promise;
the rain,a sunrise,a
sunset.
And yet, each time, I
resumed
my search for you.
Is it any
wonder then,
that you stood for two
years
under my very nose and
I saw you
not?
Yet, I have found you.
My search
ended with your touch.
Your very gentle
touch.
And, with your kiss.
Your
wonderfully tender kiss.
I have searched
the world
to find you, yet, you
stood
not 10 feet from me!
Had my eyes
not seen your smile
would I be searching
still?
Had your eyes not penetrated my
soul
would I have gone away?
I shudder
to think
I may have missed you in this
life
And yet, how could I have?
Some
force much stronger
than us; guided us
together.
And so be it!
I have known you
all my lifetimes, and now,
my search
is over!
