*We are portraying a generic mid war Infantry company. This enables us to
fall in with other units at large events. If anyone wants to purchase the NY
state shell jacket, kepi and buckles that were worn by the orginal 76 NYSVI,
its in addtion to the required uniform. But would look out of place when falling
in with other non New York regiments. Having said that it should be the goal of every member to eventually put together a state impression to supplement the federalized one. The 76th wore state jackets until mid to late 1863. At local events it is nice to be able to portray the 76th as they actually were, At national events we will be unable to actually be the 76th, so that is where the generic impression comes into play.
Remember it often pays off to get the best gear you can affors up front, or to buy cheap used items until you can afford the best gear. As time goes on and you really start to get into the hobby you may want to purchase more authentic gear, this improves your impression as well as the 76ths as a whole. It also will help you experience the life of a civil war soldier more accurately. For those of you wanting to consider the best I've now included some suggestions for those purchases and links to the craftsmen who make them.
I highly recommend you purchase Buckles, buttons and other accessories from Military Warehouse
Our preferred Federal canteen is a NY depot variant made up from a C & D Jarnagin pattern of 1858 'smoothside' with chain
hole in the sling loop; recovered in jean cloth. Their leather sling is incorrect, get one from Dell Leatherworks or Historic Clothiers instead.

I'd recommend you get Early war pattern gear as then you would appear appropriate in any year of the war. 1850 cap box, early war 2 rivet scabbard, early war cartridge box- etc(MN).

MUSKET
My research has indicated that the 76th was issued Enfields initially then they were suplimented with Springfields, as of July 1863 the 76th had both. at then end of the war the ordinance returns indicate that only springfields were turned in.Ttherefore the choice is up to you, But keep in mind that initial issue was with Enfields. Also note that we have also determined that the 76ths Enfields were struck bright, that is to say that their blueing was removed. (an example that I've seen bears this out...)
Springfields:
Fair Oaks SuttleryRegimental Quartermaster
Buy Armisports! of all the Enfields and Springfields out there they are closest to the originals in weight and details, euroarms are TOO HEAVY the stock is not contoured right the barrel bands are wrong etc...
If you want the BEST Springfield type then buy an Amoskeag from Chattahoochie Black Powder Arms, they are highly accurate reproductions and were issued as .58 cal Springfields, the gov't did not differentiate between .58 cal contract rifles, they were all issued with the generic notation of"rifled musket cal.58".
Enfield
The best bet for an Enfield is to get a defarbed one from Company Quartermaster
Slings
Get an Enfield type sling from Dell Leather Works., Don't get a sutler row one with the fake Isaac and Campbell Logo, and the metal hook.
Some of the links above go to the 3rd GA site because it does an excellent job of describing the items and their use. Rather than esentially duplicate their work I've provided direct links instead. Be sure to check out their site, it is quality!
